@bull I would be very very careful with anything you say from this point on. Facthunter (Neville) is a long time friend of mine, an extremely knowledgable and experienced professional pilot, has flown more aircraft and has more hours than you could ever dream of getting. In this case you would be the keyboard warrior and still at a TIF stage when compared to the experience of Nev
My apologies to you Ian and Facthunter in this case as I,m sure I,am totally out of line ,my query was just ,as I was just asking a normal Question about comparable costs of RAA an ELaaa or GA for that matter igot the feeling from the answers that any sort of negativity to RAA was out of line and I was being made to look stupid to ask? and the plane I was talking about looked 100% a better option ifi was to go that way was all,,,,,,,,,,,,,,sorry all.........[as I run under the house screaming yelp yelp yelp]

And the Tomahawk has a safety record of less then 2/3rds of crashes then the comparable Cessna 150/152Well ultimately this will be your call. Have it checked out very carefully by someone who is very familiar with the type, and make sure all AD's are complied with. AOPA USA have an article on the handling of this plane. I doubt it's a problem if you are properly trained have some full spin instruction and be familiar with this aircrafts differences to others like the Cessna 152 re spin recovery techniques. It's safe if you know what you are doing but don't get into one at low level. Normal recovery technique may see it steepen and speed up the rate of rotation, which is normal for this plane. The motor Lyc 0-235 is well proven and reliable if serviced properly and used regularly. Get specific instruction on the flight issues. Don't teach yourself. Nev -
Could be right there, aro, but a vastly experienced pilot with time in basic ultralights up to a""T tail boeing 727 you would think would know the difference ah............just saying........Maybe he meant T tail? -
That may be Turbo , but the fact is it still has no full flying tail! He's just a keyboard warrior bull. He's also flown just about everything from very basic ultralights to Boeing 727s on airline service.-

Yes
mate and I,m sorry about the computer comment to Facthunter if I,m wrong but it you look at the photo of that tomahawk you will see it is not a full flying tail as it has a fixed tailplane with elevators as you can see the elevator balance tabs at each end of the tailplane. And yes I,m sure I could happily do any flyins that I have already done in the tomahawk and with more room and style! Are you talking about the Piper Tomahawk? -
Bet I still could do any of the flyins that I used to do in a lightwing or Poky little jab or a gt500 or a savanah ect .And have more range with more room and faster cruise speed too,and still be cheaper than bloody RAA,the way it is going with them and our costs ah..........The Tomahawk is really a trainer. GA is about carrying people plus baggage over decent distances to interesting destinations. With a four seater you can take more friends with limited baggage to part fuel distances, but for two people you can do long legs with a lot of overnight gear -
No flying tail on this one mate!!!! are you sure you really know what your talking about??or are you just a computer pilot mate??New or reconditioned? There is a limit to how many times you can overhaul an engine. I'm not a fan of a flying tail (unless it's on a Boeing.). The traumahawk looks neat .Once they are repainted you don't know what it's covering up? Most of them were used for training. They aren't as bad as some make out. Nev-

The hawk looks great to me awesome little buy with more room then a jab or lightwing ahNew or reconditioned? There is a limit to how many times you can overhaul an engine. What about this one ,,nice aircraft with NEW engineThat engine could be on it's 3rd life. That's one more than I would recommend so it's a NEW one next up. $40 k.at lest..magneto's every five years .What's the airframe like corrosion wise? spend easy $50 K (flap tracks.) underfloor structure. How much has the prop been cut at the tips? etc .Not new but some have more hours. They aren't very wide in the cockpit. Get a Piper Cub American Champion Citabria, Decathlon. and LIVE.. Yay..PS on second thoughts they will send you broke. unless it has a job of work to do and you know what you are doing. Nev -

Cool down mate,,,a lot of these comments are a bit close to the bone . But those videos out there show a real problem with the way the operation was done ,so they provide evidence to speculate ah...............Thanks for the neutral support..Actually I mean that, if you are unaware of all the facts then you are perfectly entitled to comment as you have and I take no umbrage at that...this had nothing to do with a beach landing. Woody was carrying out a PSAL at 200 ft when the engine failed.....he had 150 metres of beach in front of him and water in front after that. Historically high wing aircraft with wheels down going into water have a very poor survival rate.......that is why we refused to do reef flights. He made the hard choice and brought it around and back to land on the sand. There was 53 litres of fuel on board, the engine just cut with no missing at all which indicates a break in fuel line or complete ignition failure, ATSB are investigating both of these options.I was there and was capturing fuel as it drained to prevent it falling all over the occupants in the wreckage and administered CPR to the girl who died for over an hour.I also flew out and brought paramedics back in.
I do hope that all those tall poppy arm chair judges I have now seen on this page are ducking for cover and cringing after the faceatious moralistic ill informed judgements they have dared to make.
And I would just be willing to bet they are also too gutless to apologise.

Pilot dead in NSW north coast air crash loss of control in cloud/fog by the sound of the witness reports, rip old mate..........................

I agree Capt ,But you would think someone who calls themselves "right rudder, would have a little bit more knowledge of aircraft designs than the average publicI was wondering how long it would be before someone mentioned this.Whilst I understand yr angst towards all light planes being labeled an ultralight most of the gen public whom represent have little to no knowledge of light planes 'group' them all into ultralights. It bothers me none cause in a way they all are if compared to what these gen public normally fly in. Us pilots know what's what, that's all that matters but sometimes the word ultralight kinda fits to highlight a situation.
-
No BUT you are inferring something along those lines ,It's up to you if you want to miss the point of illegal flying; I wasn't discussing the cause.-

Not exactly an ultralight ,just a very strong two seat aerobatic rated aircraft that is registered under RAA rules......not a TRUE ultralight, upsets me that people taint real ultralight statistics with the plastic and tin accident rate..grrrrrr...........Condolences to Ian,s family and ihope we hear what caused this "":ultralight"' accident............This is another tragic loss of a very experienced pilot loosing his life in an ultralight WHY?Condolences to his family and friends and I hope we can get some answers.R.I.P

Just an update and info for lakeside easter flyin, runway directions are 04 and 22 single bitumen runway , and the preffered landing direction is on 22 with departures on 04, 22 is uphill slightly and downhill on 04, please use standard ctaf radio procedures with left hand circuits. aircraft parking and camping will be on southern side of strip in front of the four big hangers, please take note of all marshalling advice and directions thanks, strip has no numbers or piano keys marked, just plain bitumen. Slightly displaced threshold on 22 due to strip repair work please land a little long to avoid small piles of gravel before start of bitumen at start of 22 Please forgive me for grammer and spelling as not my best trait lol,,aircraft are welcome any time before easter if required from thursday onwards . As stated before a vehicle [ my 4x4] will be available for servo runs and if anyone wants to hire a car from Proserpine airport lifts can be arranged ,so you can visit Airlie beach and the Whitsunday islands we are still here and just as beautiful as always [just a bit bare and a short back and sides for a lot of trees] they will grow back\] So am looking forward to seeing you all there then,, ps. This is my first time ever at having to organise anything like this ,so bare with me if i,ve forgotten or left anything out Cheers Scott.......Several owner/pilots live either on the field itself or close by. The area has several close power lines and some noise-sensitive rural neighbors, so keep both in mind if attending for the first time.
Even with a slight tailwind it is preferred by some to always land from the east, although landing from the West is possible but generally downhill all the way. The runway is long however. No charges for landing or camping and sat dinner and breakfast and coffee and tea
will be supplied , and a donation tin will be set up to help with costs .strip is prone to south easterly cross winds . http://airportnavfinder.com/airport/YLAK/

Fuck em ,,,just fly,,,,,as some of us have been safely doing for over 40 yearsOh , all good then, mine's a 25 reg factory built. No problem.I completely accept that it's good practice, but they've gone and made it mandatory, and in doing so, have made it either difficult or illegal for some of us to fly.-

Well done there KRviator,,, bit more sophisticated then my high tech inexpensive blackboard and chalk [all I can bring my self to waste on recording my flights around the paddock at 50kts :alone; not because no,one will fly with me but because I,ve only got one seat]It comes down to the individual owner too. I have a Dynon SkyView system that records flight, autopilot, navigation & engine information to the datalog twice a second. To supplement that, I installed an automotive dash camera to the rollbar looking over my shoulder & out the canopy, so if I do come to grief, not only do they have the data log, but HD video of my actions leading up to, and during, the event. Now, not everyone can afford, or wants to install, a similar EFIS setup, but even something as simple as the dashcam costs less than $200 and could provide valuable information in the event of an incident.-
