WHAT DID YOU GET?Just bought my first aircraft. Cant wait to be allowed to fly it now without an Instructor. LMAO -
done, now just waiting for conformation email..24hrs....Go here,https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/brief/Register, then click on General Met Forecasts, or Special Met Briefing
The big benefits of this are:
(a) You can get an Area Forecast matched to your WAC charts rather than a BOM district forecast where the met stations may not be near your route
(b) It's been put together for Aviation use, so the CB you ran into may well have been forecast
© You'll be legal
Also, I'd highly recommend doing the Met module from the PPL course. Best method would be to do it in a class at Murray Bridge, Goolwa or Aldinga if they run them, because people are asking questions and collectively you get a better understanding, or get the Met module book.

BUT A storm above a fog ?

yep as the fog lifted there was a gap producing the elusion of sun lifting the fog ,indicating a clearish sky.and as there was no ground wind this backed up that forecast, however unbenounced to us was a looming cb blowing from the west. as we climbed to cruise hight we noted how cold it was as we were breathing out a lot of vapour,.once back on the ground the cb blew the fog est and we could clearly see what was going on ,minetes later it was above the strip and nasty...this has been on going,weather/met report seem to be a bit out of late?

Hey Eighty,it was on all news channels last night in s.a...you should be able to find it somewhere? There must be a news item about this? -
Hi Ian,the site is awesome,I can't think of anything I don,t love about the site and I feel very guilty that im yet to donate..when Im back on top youll recieve a well deserved donation..for now I continue (and strongly recomend all members) recomending the site ..I have encouraged sevral aviators to the site and I think promotion is the Key..you would be suprised how many pilots and students do NOT know about the site,Ive' found that mostly enthusist(not pilots) find there way here ,ussaully by surfing the web.
I wonder if every member donated a dollar or two for an advert in the just pilots mag ,you,d get more traffic? and the PILOT SHOP..wow the prices are awesome ,would love to see your pilot shop on the back page of just pilots.....anyway Huge thumbs up Ian ..you run a tight ship and she,s always well scrubbed ..love it.

not sure ? someone out of adelaide soaring clubAnyone know who owned the Savvy that crashed. Looks like a total write off. -
There was an accident yesturday involving a U/L practicing forced landings when they were hit by a severe wind gust and lost control and had to do a real forced landing. I can,t help but wonder how many Unexplained crashes may have been caused by this? For you whome follow my threads you would know I,m awaiting a warm front to fly my new lightwing back home from Benalla.I have made 3 genuine attempts with no success,Reason is weather..Mainly wind gust.on attempt 2 I did an assisted(CFI - accompany, nav refresher and getting to know my plane)) short x-country to benalla (25nm) whilst on finals on the return trip we were hit by a cold front that brought a severe wind gust rolling the plane to 35 deg Ailrons proved useless and a boot full of rudder was needed to level her ..bit of a fright!!..
A week later I was back down there fo attempt 3, I t was a calm morning with fog and after waiting 4 hrs the fog,it lifted to about 1-2000ft.youcould make out the suns reflection and looked like some good flying weather.I wisely desided to have my CFI take another flight with me to practice some stalls,
We took off and I noted how smooth it was and did a circuit then started to head for the training area when we got a couple of small bumps..then out of know where it hit us..A sever gust rolled the plane 60deg My CFI Instintivly took control rolling her level with full ailron and a heap of rudder ,then the front continued with severe wind shear and 90 deg x-wind componet IAS jumping from 55 to 70kts and CFI landed a perfect (very hot 65kt) wheeler landing rolling some 500 mtrs... turns out hidden above the fog was a nasty CB..bloody storms.. YES YES had got a met report and No men tion of a Charlie Bravo in the area.
Sice then I have undergone a disaplined research into turbulance..One thing I came across a bit was that most 3 -axis Ultralight ailrons WILL be over powered by severe windgusts? I find this strange? why would you not make the roll rate better? In the case of my Lightwing with short ailrons, why?not make them full span? amyway sick of waiting for the weater, want my plane home.

They were from Adelaide gliding club.Practicing forced landings when they were hit by a severe wind gust and where unable to maintain control. No option but to follow with a real forced landing in a paddock. I don,t know any other details: and can only speculate the engine may have been switched off? or to low and slow for power to be applied? they both are alright and thats the main thing.

I found my new lightwing gr 582 very pleasent to fly, much easier than the thruster t500, I found it was very aerodynamic(kill power and she just keeps going) I land it dead stick every time from around 500ft kill power glide at 55 and 3 point her,,.... love it..although would like a lil more ailron aurthority.found out twice so far that when hit by a windgust ailrons are over powered and need to lay in the boot and get her back with rudder aswell. still me no complain.

id buy them as the ones im using are borrowed...they are easy to install (no need for a hammer) just screw them in and light weight.,My plane was hit by some nasty winds and they have not budged in soft muddy ground... there stainless steelGreat that this thread has started and we have all heard many stories about aircraft being flipped over but what is of interest to me is I am currently talking to a manufacturer about tie downs and getting them made. The Claw is the best tie down that I know of and it will take a cyclone to impact that savage thing but they are not a light piece of gear to be carrying around with you...about 5kg. The screw into the ground tie downs that I am looking at getting made will be very strong and made out of thick metal that will screw into the ground and at this stage they will probably only be priced at just a few dollars each...you will be able to get any number of them that you like. Would make for great give-aways in the shop here with orders over $100 for exampleSo, the question is...do you think the screw into the ground type of tie downs are something that you would consider using if they were cheaper then anything else or similar products at a higher price on the market -
Im currently using the screw ins, tied at the wing strutts and tail wheel, also chocked main and tail wheel.....

hell yeh...been a nightmare..drove 9 hrs down there AT A COST OF $130 (FUEL)for a 5 min circuit...then drove 9 hrs home again..what a waste....SICK OF WAITINGI bet you wished you trailered it all the way to your place now -
I did mine at Benalla vic,,top rates at $150hr, very easy going genuine and knolageable instuctor,,Jim Cuthill (Falcon Hawk airfield), trains in an enclosed t500 thruster,, 0358286428..
if you can peddal a thruster down the strip you will handle every other TW that follows..
-
Not Yet,,and Not Happy,,,weather been terrible in vic..made a third attempt tues/wed but encounted another cold front and severe turbulance so had to abbanden and come home in the car agian...will have to wait a week or 2 for a high system with some calmer winds a try aagain...lost my ground crew so doin it all solo ,will carry a couple of jerry cans ...bloody weather..grrrrrrrrrrrTim you got that lightwing home yet ???? -
depends on situation !!! for me it made NO sence at all to Hire fly at the costs when anyone, even us pensionersan buy a very cheap single seater ($3-6000 will do it) and also having ones own property(or permission) helps.,,saves travelling an hour to the local field and the cost,s for hiring theses days???? a neat lil single seat,2 stroke, low maintanence runs off the smell of an oily rag etc,,, and if one shoud find one lucky enough to(or has worked damn hard to) go get that dream...look around as I did for something lower market...I love that I can look outside and say Yep ill go for a fly today...or ahh I might pimp out my ride today..love customising instead of just throwing your old " custom"pillow in there for exta hight ...lol If you only fly once a month then fair enough but if you find your self hiring every weekend Id consider a cheap single as I did..fix her up,build up the hours, sell it to step up if you want as I did..started with a $2000,Bunyip and flew, fixed, sold, and stepped up to the thruster, flew, fixed, sold, stepped up to the supercat, flew, fixed, sold stepped up to the lightwing....hmmm wonder how long to get that RV?????wish.ha ha ha

my new WAC has both NM and KMS ? so worked both out but refer to kms as most have a good grasp on km distance..of coarse in flight I refer to NM.. also used both for calculations on the short 17NM flight into Benalla, used Kms for distance and ground speeds, fuel consumption etc.. and used NM for normal NAV and A/C operations..
back home again waiting on the weather to ease and head back sunday arvo if weather permits???????

that makes sence as I noticed him making high dummy approaches! There is an NDB and VOR situated at Tailem Bend. Training facilities use it to practice NDB and VOR approaches as well as intercepts etc for IFR.

benalla to sherlock.
