  1. I use a $40 battery operated jerry can pump from super cheap auto..leave the 20ltr jerry on the ground stick the pump in and the hose in the funnel(I made a hook so I dont have to hold the hose in the funnel) switch on and a couple mins later job done..no back work, well I can lift it with a severe disc buldge so was either that or my 40kg missus would have to lift it ..yep 1/2 her body weight...strong.gif.dc81ffdb7807ef709604a09d84c59938.gif

  2. In a real engine out, your heartrate goes up in inverse proportion to your engine revs, your grip on the stick tightens accordingly and it is a lot different to doing a conventional glide or an engine-out drill next to an instructor. If it was a genuine thrill-ride at a theme park, you would pay extra for the excitement.

hmm stick grip tightens, heart rate increase ,,sounds like me when I fly threw my own wake, was that a bump??????????im outa here, there could be another one,,but Dad its 6am and you said theres no wind today?look the socks dead......lmfao,, just some light humour I am accually building a bump tolorence now I have the lightwing...

Not sure about the newer Lighties but my old girl is very slippery and can require a long circuit to slow her down at idle was very shocked at the difference from the old thruster/buyip and supcrap, the light wing just keeps on mushing away and pulling the reins back only makes her more determeined to want to glide to another country. ...glad its got disc brakes....pitty they don,t work in the air~!

  3. reading all these comments I wonder how many have had a real engine failure? not sure about 4 bangers but In a 2 stroke? a glide approach is NEVER really a glide approach.. the prop will still be under sum 2000rpm of power and you can bet your life if its a draggy Ultralight, and the engine really stops you are not goin to make that strip. My bunyip had 3 total engine failures and believe me the glide was different, the first time I was shocked at the down angle increase compared to when I make my glide approach,, also in th supercat when it failed I had done 3 hours with at least 10 landings all glide/dead stick and had a good feel for the glid angle (50knts) when the engine died I set glide for a paddock(engine surging between 0 -3000 rpm.after a few secondes it died, the plane felt like it hit a brick wall.I adjusted the angle to hold 50 and theres was no way I was making that paddock of course now I had lost my 2000rpm glide power plus now had extra drag windmilling the prop...So the point Im making is how can there be a right distance? all aircraft are different and as far as glidding for ????hight at ////distance so you can make the runway in case of engine failure? this would require a higher glide speed in a 2st draggy plane and if its a short runway ?good luck...im glad we got lots of paddocks out here to chose from in any event...take it easy guys.

easy way to say what I mean is land a 2 banger on a sealed runway with no brakes and you just keep on rolling, do the same but switch off the engine and youll instantly feel the diff and come to a stop..

    EDIT : NO dis-respect intended

  4. when I did my ticket my CFI tought me ONLY to land dead stick tight circuit, however I never got a real chance to do power on landings,I continued dead sticking even in the new light wing,,my first real power on landing was with Thirsty and boy did it help..why? well as I have a second strip with only 250 mtrs of runway powerline one end so one way in and out ,2 50ft trees at thresh hold with a 80 ft gap and if I had do dead stick it I could be in for some fun? I have practiced my power on approaches and this morning was able to land for the first time in the lightwing with 100 meters spare..enjoyed a cuppa and yak with Pa then back home with a big smile..thanks Thirsty for your advice and again for helping me out.

note the glide angle is always is different depending on wind direction and strength so with a small strip can be very difficult .take it easy guys thanks for the vid thirsty

  5. you can get carb heat kits for 582 ,bing 54 carbies..as above if the conditions are right you can have icing on any carbied engine, slide or butterfly,2st or 4,

I installed carbie silences to my old 447,(factory made),they are alloy tubes that goes on the intake side of carbie with air filter attatched to end of them,so looks like an extension for the airfilter, first test flight/taxi,was a cold dewy morning and after warm up I taxied fo sum run ups all good, gave it full throttle and just on round out she died slightly,I aborted take off and came back and removed air filters to find both ICE and Moiture inside the silencers.I removed the silences ,cleaned carbies, put airfilters back on and never happened again...stick your rotax silencers thanks..

  6. RAA pilots...get to make the decisions without being challenged(by other pilots)/denied(by ATC)....We lost 2 out of Temora....everyone on the ground knew that they should not have launched....at last light....they did and paid the price...noone called them back

seems to have happened at Monto ....again.....

hmm I'm not sure that that telling them not to "launch" or asking them to return would have helped!! Like humans do ,we like to make our own descissions, regaurdless (NOT all ,but a vast majority ), what peeps are telling us.,take Skyhooks lead singer Shirley statchen for eg: was blowing a gale ,he had not long been soloing ,He was in an unfamilar helli and people on the ground told him NOT to fly and His reply,"Do you know who I am?"(hmm a dead man?) and off he went to meet his maker..

Me, im only to happy to take the warnings and advise of others,,My life is worth too much.. but Humans will continue with this "don't tell me what to do" attitude..thats just part of Human behaviour ,So I personally Don,t think it would have helped, but thats Not to say we should sit back and watch it all unfold. We can only advise people and hope they take heed?

I think people like the freedom to make their own minds up be it a good descission or otherwise.

So try to make the right descission peeple and think very very carefully what your putting your self and your pax and the ground dwellers into...

    keep safe folks.

Edit: someone on here made a very good point..TIME..some pilots just don,t have the time with work commitments erc...thinking this could be a prime reason for poor descission making?

  7. I would say no to a thread killing someone. I do get the point however, and it's more a case of getting the information incorrectly. In a personal voice/ears conversation you can pick up what a person is implying most of the time just by the sound of their voice. Whether they're being genuine or sarcastic or just telling fish stories. In text on a screen you can't tell that, and so life gets all very complicated all of a sudden. It's a high skill to be able to write something that everyone can figure out and not twist up into knots and get all flustered about. I'm in the least way even close to being able to do that myself! It's a hard thing, because one doesn't learn if others don't speak, but in places like this, one doesn't know if the one that speaks is a desk pilot who's an expert at the rules, or a real life experienced person. The thing I find is that a lot of the experienced guys hate places like forums because they get in trouble from the rule experts because they might have been doing something slightly different to what the rule person thinks they should... and vise a versa. So we have a lot of advice from those that love to be heard, while the others sit in the background and cringe... but if they say something, it then becomes an argument between who is right and wrong and the poor person asking the question is forgotten about and life goes on... with the questioner still up the creek without a paddle, but also now unsure which way to sit in the boat because he said you face the front, but she said you face the back...

I think the Honourable Louis has said it all in that, we should be more concerned about whether a thread will Save someone. And to do that we need healthy discussion, not a he said, she said, do it or else situation. When you think about it we are really just shooting ourselves in the foot, what do most video games consist of these days? The TV is pretty much full of it, and it's one of the most disgusting crimes in the world today. Yet no one really notices... killing people, shooting, blood and gore etc etc... which kids sit and play with or watch, and yet we worry about someone talking about taxing at night, or whatever... it comes down to awareness and responsibility don't you think?

    well said Tomo.

  8. Lately been thinking about an airpark and wondering what people would like at such a place? Besides a runway for every directions and the usual airstrip fundimentals .?

was thinking a hanger for each guest with inbuilt unit (3-5 star)with a good selection of aviation dvd's.., . a restrurat/cafe/bar /museum featuring antique aircraft as the centre piece,A comunity lounge, with wifi ,(internet access).would also be thinking a Pilot shop(of coarse stocked with all Ian's goodies).. some work shops(as 1 of my passions in making wind socks could have a build your own mini custom windsock? build your own custom wooden plane etc.) a maintenece work shop with lvl 2 on hand, fuel bowsers including UL and would stock all oils etc...

was thinking a little funa park and a little native vegitation trail(if out here you could admire the sand and rocks?lol). would definatly be opened to ALL travellers be it by plane train or automobile.

So what else would you like to see or have? after all Serious suggestions .have a good think what would make your stay worth while? AND INTERESTING ?

  9. J170 didn't see you at Gawler today or yesterday. Went up for 2 hrs this morning. Very nice except some idiot forgot to grade the highway again. Full of bloody bumps. lOL

same here, but my boy did not seem to mind knocking his head on the roof a few times.. again daddy again....sorry son where heading home now..lol

good luck Jimmy80,write your flights in a diary or even a piece of paper untill you get a log book, then fill them in and have your CFI sign off for you..youll need them for logged time when you get your ticket and have to send off a copy of your log book entries o head office ..take it easy and enjoy your flying

  10. guysthere was around 120 people present for the votes and the chairman had pointed out that only financial members could vote and of those voting only if you hadnt already voted by proxy.

there was much discussion on the last point with approx 10 members eventually being identified as members present who had also voted by proxy. These members were concerned if they withheld a vote by show of hands they wanted assurity that their proxy was present and in the end such an assurance couldnt be given due to the system we use. In the end it was decided sensibly that a show of hands of members in this position was taken and if the count was cloes enough that this might matter we would revisit...In the end it wasnt that close.

furthermore proxys werent handed out, it seemed to me if you voted by proxy then your vote was counted.

I dont agree it was unanimous from the floor some board members voted against some (5%one) and the rest of the board semed to neither vote for or against and therefore i pressume may have voted by proxy (Ed H from SA was one and another sitting very close to him) Not sure why the board in general didnt appear to vote? perhaps didnt want the members to see which way they voted, or didnt want to seem to direct the members to vote a specific way....Personally I wish they had shown which way they had voted,so eventhough I was dissapointed that Ed voted against he at least was prepared to show his thoughts to his members.

Its true that in the end we didnt vote by show of hands for the last 2 SR's so if someone was to chllenge its those 2 that could possibly be open...Middo (chair) made the claim that these were through on proxy alone, but perhaps he knew something taht the rest of us didnt.....How many people voted by proxy....for it not to matter when 120 members were present then by inference the proxy votes must have been 3times that many at least...if so what a fantastic outcome for RAAus tohave around 600 people vote on anything!!! (This is all suposition by me and not a statement of fact regarding proxy totals or total members present count)

To me, the question of challenging the vote always exists the real question is do those for who these changes mean the most (ie those on the board) accept the vote and they seemed to.

If for whatever reason the vote was challenged requiring a repeat....anyone want to give odds on the outcome being different after what im sure people will see as a tactic of avoidance.....

The 4 special resolutions are through, are sensible, and I doubt taht if it got to the point of being challenged will end up with a different outcome. From the members present perspectiveit was clearly as shags said all but unanimous.I doubt that particular can of worms is going to be touched by anyone.

    Regards
