  1. Hey guys my new copy of Jim Davis,PPL book arrived today,,,wow easy reading ,easy to understand .chapter/modules on every thing including easy to understand MET..looks pretty interesting but no no after I go throw dust back over the plane to keep some drag!lol thank you guys.

  2. Im a

Allan,You don't know him, me or his strip. He was landing a new (to him) type of aircraft on a very short strip hence his desire to have me with him for that last leg - what the hell's wrong with that? You think all RAA pilots should be 100% capable of handling anything? I thought the Pilot Cert was a licence to learn and that is exactly what Tim is doing in his new aircraft.

I'm an instructor and I'm satisfied when each of my students gets his certificate that they can handle the MAJORITY of conditions they will come across.

Anyway well done Tim on finally taking your son for his first flight with you, I bet he was wrapped!

little imbarrassed to say it bought tears to my eyes,,He was so excited and was pointing at a car .look dad look at the little car,,can we go to space Dad?,,sorry son where going to land now.."NO DAD NO NO I want to fly,,Can we fly over KINDY?lol..made a perfect landing in front of one nervouse mummy... Now My son WIL NOT talk on a phone, never has after the flight I rang Pa and my son asked for the phone he then told Pa "I flew in daddy's plane up in the sky love you bye" pure JOY people pure joy...again thank you Thirsty A true gentlman and happy to right the wrongs....

  3. I did use G.A regs for flying,I sat on evens +500 =2500 ft,I used radio constantly even while flying 15 nm past Kerang I annouced who I was ,where I was and where I was Heading,I was told to do this as its good airmanship,,I flew a track to the right of my heading (in case another plane was on the same heading in opersite direction),I used all avail info maps ERSA ,airservices etc.. I flew all my legs with Nil wind ( No Bump TOLORENCE) So I would have left my plane at Pinnaroo untill the weather was calm but that would have left my plane exsposed to some harsh weather pending. So I was offered the assistance of an COMPERTANT instructor soley to build a better Bump tolorence and make sure I have No trouble with my strip ( for those who havn;t followed my theads I have a small tight 300 mtr strip..So with a new bigger faster Plane It was wiser to have some one exspierienced on bourd (better to be safe than sorry). I had No trouble and so I went back up later for a solo and greased her in.. I will continue my learning curve as we all do.I have to much livin to do,Like a few of us , I don,t like aerobatics ,or any g,force for that matter, and I also believe fear is good,,It keeps us safe? look at some of these pilots flying 2 ft of water and alike,to conferdent and complete dissregaurd for life..I have a 5 year old son An WILL watch him grow,So If I have doubts about my flying ability,I like to improve ,I was happy to have another Insrtuctor Judging me and informing me on about different interperations between CFI"s ( which amazes me )we put so much trust in our CFI,our life ..So you fly religously like they tought you..As I did,"if see a patch of fog climb above it"? Ok boss.I,ll do that .if see fog climb above it,.....any way I think its a good thing to fly with some other CFI,s to get there perspective and Idea's ,point of view etc.....Im much much wiser after this flight and was pointed out, you,ll learn alot and be a better safer pilot after..Agree,learnt one hell of a lot on this journy and can now relax a little and start enjoying the plane BETWEEN MY 2 LIL STRIPS.. Not havong So much going on,IE new plane ,faster, bigger,so many gauges, first major Nav,unfamilure elements, stay on track don,t get lost, saty clear of milatry space ,modle rocket club, and so on,so had alot of anx and would have perferred LIKE I ASKED ON HERE REMEMBER for a co-pilot in new soroundings, but was told by my CFI ,whats the point have having a NAV endourcment if you are not going to use it.point was taken and Here I am somewhat confussed, enlightend, little safer, and a hell of a lot more consouse...what a learning curve and we all remember that first real long solo NAV ,but in a fresh plane?,anyway she,s back home and Pa came this morning and gave it the big thumbs up....wanna fly PA,, can it hold 150kg? lol he to big for little planes...

  4. should mention Not sure what some you are thinking,I love these forums ! They have/do/and will continue to teach me things not completely covered in all the training,,I keep coming back to read all the positive and knowledgeable answers...And my spelling? hey what can I say I left school at 13,lived on the streets then became a grease monkey...So spelling is not my forte. but if you need your oil changed?lol remember we never stop learning and I'm testament to that.

thank you So much Thirsty, words could not describe my gratatude.

  6. man all this reading makes me scared to land at an airport with traffic! I didn,t realise theres guys out there not givving a #$#$,,I thought we're ment to be looking out for one another? When I landed at Echuca there were 3 G.A planes doing circuit touch"n"goes,I called 10nm out and was replied to btyCessna $%$%^ clearing traffic pattern for lightwing, then the next Cessna and finnally at 5 nm out the Piper informed me out of traffic pattern lightwing clear..I was so relieved and had to thank them for the clearence.they contiued touch,n,goes for 30 mis after I called clear of runway.. ahh good guys thats for sure ,,now thats Airmanship I,m sure glad I havn't encounted some of these misshaps or it would really put a dent in an already bruised conferdence level.. been using ERSA and also descovered the airservices report in which told me that on all my destination strips all grass runways were out of service, lucky because Echuca had No unservicable markers out yet?

  7. Getting closer Tim. Make sure you bring your new plane out to YMBD sometime to give us a look (and maybe take me for a fly?).

yeh will do,looks like it will be stuck out at pinnaroo for a whil as we got some nasty stuff coming.could have got it home this arvo but apperently No flying on fathers day? take it easy

FMe what concerns me most about this situation is that you sound as though you are blissfully unaware of the potential danger that you have placed yourself in, 15 miles @ 2500 and you could see the airstrip I don't think so (I went out flying for a couple of hours this afternoon in perfect conditions @ 2500 and I was a lot closer than 15 miles before I could see the airstrip and it is one I fly from daily, so I know exactly where to look). I'm also a little concerned that your CFI agrees with your course of action any CFI who condones decent through fog/cloud (I'm not sure what it was any more) probably needs a visit from RAA and CASA as well. The other thing is that you have gotten away with it once what will you do next time "ah it's only a bit of cloud it'll be ok" and this is a very real human tendency and if you continue with this attitude it will kill you.

No-one here is trying to stop you enjoying your flying, just stop and think what could I have done better to make this a safer flight. Good pilots evaluate every flight they make, it's what makes them better. We all make mistakes and we all like to think we are better than we actually are but if you don't learn from your previous flights then you have no business being in an aircraft of any type.[/quot

I was scared out of my brain, was told if encounter some fog fly above it, wich I did not.I thought it was some fog lifting but as I got closer I realised it was a cloud I killed power and decended to 1500 on the way down it got cold and seen some fuzz float bye I headed for the runway shaking like a leaf and happy to be on the ground,I emediatly rang my CFI and told him what happened,my last check was 15nm (may have been closer not long after I called 10nm out)to go and I could see the air field as its the only dusty paddock in a sea of green crops in the distance ,I had picked out earlier and was using it for feature nav, lesson was learnt and will contiue my early morning calm clear flights..

  9. Just to be pedantic - 70 knots is 129.64kph not 146 as you stated in your original post (kph = knots * 1.852). So, what happens at Sherlock? Remember to call into Gawler for a coffee on a Saturday sometime, less than an hour away as we are great bunch and treat everybody as equalsthermals were insane and never encounted such brute force before,as the runways is so long i felt its better and safer for me to get her down by doing a 180 as the sock was dead, looked so inviting to ..yeh fell for that trap,,but lesson learned.hence why i then waited another 4 hours.. anyway so landed with a tail wind/gust as after I was watching the dead sock and it was blowing every now and again in different directions., I suspect thermal not wind but not sure? was a greased wheeler too, surly that accounts for somthing? lol take it easy guys oh 146kms on the gps as I came over the thresh hold then after I rounded I glanced at the asi 70kts so held off a little then put her down on the mains and ran for about 3-400mtrs,,approach was asi 60knts but in the rough air was jumping up and down..

  10. I think we need to keep in mind that Flyerme may not be expressing himself as well as he would in person... this Internet is a very impersonal tool and it is easy to struggle to convey your meaning accurately in my experience. I hope this is the case...BUT...

I still do think you should listen to some of the advice Flyerme and here is why...... I too have been concerned about your ferry flight with your new Lightwing based upon following your posts in the last few weeks. We really are looking out for you by saying this mate...

agree winsor 100 %, all organised to fly her home in the morning but weather just updated and 10kn x wind on my little strip....No thanks ,,rest of week going to be wild here so will go down with more tie downs and remove tarps (wind on tarps = bad paint job) yep flying is truely NOT for the impatient.had a lovely Fathers Day picnic at the airfield,,awesome

  11. If you are not concerned, then why did you change your post to read "under the cloud".I have serious doubts that ANY CFI woud condone flying through cloud.

The conclusions were drawn from your origina post. I dont care how you discovered your rudder aileron issue, the fact is you had an issue.

Deadly pilot attitudes are easy to spot by those who know what to look for.

    Expect a letter.

as I re read it I realised how the conclusions where be made by how I had miss worded it and I wanted to be clear..I learnt a very valuble lesson ,and will avoid all cloud and fog, flying is a learning curve and as long as we do learn and I did.! I landed emediatly and sat at the aifield for 6 /1/2 hours, the cloud left but sun was out and could see thermals so waited for the heat to drop and continued in clear sky. a wiser pilot

  12. As I mentioned visual was fine , I had passed some fog that had lifted to 2500ft and did not effect my visual in anyway .as I was around 15nm from my destination I noticed what appeared to be more fog ,this fog looked thicker and as I got closer I saw it was a blanket about a km long about 50mtrs thick and who knows how far? I descided to set glide and then saw very thin bits of fog/cloud pass bye as I descended keeping WELL over 5km visual as coud see the runway from 15nm out .I levelled at 1500 well undernith and encounted some minor turbulance.

I emediatly rang my CFI and told him what had happened ,His words where you did the right thing in reconising a potentual problem,he said it happened to him once and he made an out landing in a paddock,,lets not foget fellow pilots Im doing MY FIRST REAL SOLO NAV alot of things going on,( as apposed to the triangle x-country I did to get my endourcment)I m proud of how I handled it and was happy to hear My CFI say he was proud of how I did...

  13. and a

No not fun and as I had filled a flight plan and printed a weather report from airservices as a registed pilot, all was said to be clear and as my cfi whome I did my x country said if you ever encounter low cloud fly under it , And I accually thought it was a bit of fog antill I staretd flying threw it then set glide and passed threw, I maintained Visual of the whole time so stuck to the rules...so settle down people and you gotta stop jumping to conlusions.. made contact with my CFI on arrival to Ouyen and He was both happy and satified with how I handled a situation where you just get cought out.. everything by the book. so much for clear sky with some patchy fog early.... as I mentioned , before I went off in to blindness I chopped power set glide maintained a visual before I entered it fully and continued undernith and landed emediatly.all by the book....sorry gotta laugh at some you drawing your own conclusions...

and as I was only 11 nm from ouyen and was clear at 1500ft No point detouring when all was safe AND LEGAL....

  14. You flew threw cloud (through cloud)? Has somebody changed the rules or am I missing something here? Anyway, sounds like it was an exciting time, any photos?

  15. Get someone to teach you how to "roll on a point". It's a great stick and rudder coordination exercise akin to playing the scales on a piano... Sorts out that "bloody aileron drag" big time... You pick a point on the horizon, then using stick AND rudder, you roll from one side to the other while maintaining the nose on the point. Start out with small and slow inputs. As you learn the technique and become more proficient, you'll be able to increase the "wing waggle" speed and rate. It really is a great way to teach/learn foot and hand coordination.

makes for a nice easy side slip I must say..with all that drag..

  16. yay,. flew from Cohuna vic yesterday to swan hill then on to Ouyen where thick blanket of cloud was encounted at 2500ft,,was forced to fly low under the cloud waited 2 hrs at ouyen and after clouds where gone had a clear blue sky NO wind but could see the shimmering thermals every where, desided Id take off gain,,(big mistake) after lift off was thrown around and heaverly pounded made a 70knt (146kms)landing (wheeler) and desided to wait a bit longer,ha ha

after waiting 6 1/2 hours I headed to Pinnaroo, sweeeeeeeeeet only an hour from home but as it was 6pm when I hit Pinnaroo No chance of continuing..head down today(hrs drive) to check on my baby and prepare for the dreaded flight tomoz morning...yep I gotta get it down on my wee strip,(however I finally had it exstended to 360 mtrs....so happy I did it alone and proud as punch and conferdence has increased(not my flying but my nav precedures, radio etc..) I love this lighty but do have a slight gripe...bloody ailron drag!!!!!!!!!!!It be nice to roll the aircraft (lets say a wing waggle) in stead of it yawing, but NO chance of that ,Who needs a rudder with them big draggy ailrons throwing the slip ball into the corner? lol so happy ..

  17. Its awesome to see some YOUNG people getting involved in aviation... and i mean no disrespect whatsoever to the older generation, because without them there would be no aviation! But someone has to carry it on, and most of the young people these days are dead beats (geez this makes ME sound old) and i wouldnt trust them to drive a lawn mower, let alone an aircraft!Any way, that was my round about way of saying, Well done, and keep it up.

yep great to see another youngen, good luck on getting the certificate.

  18. yay..Finally manage to fly out of FALCON HAWK airfrield monday 27th,flew with only 10km visibility,so the GPS had to be switched on .first leg heading 26 deg at 2500ft was magical, but under 2000ft at Echuca was rough as guts and 3 vh (2 cessna's and a piper) doing circuit/touch 'n'go wotk made it interesting, after a quick re-fuel of 14 ltrs(hr) I headed to COHUNA..ahahahahah dang will have to build a bump tolorence NOW...flying along at 2500ft at 60kntASI and ony 76kmh ground speed I was being beaten aeound left right and centre.I was sucked up in an up drought at 700fpm at 70knts NO power ,Nose down.. made a streight in approach at Cohuna with a strong gusty head wind of around 15kts made for an awesome short 50mtr greaser on 33,,decided to call it a day and tie her down antill next week and will move her again,,,HEY bright side? she is 3 hrs closer..lol I have really bought a nice plane and fel guilty for owning such a gem...
