  1. Yes, of course it's OK for board members to comment and openly support candidates, right up to the voting point where the members have a right to a confidential vote. There are many precedents for this in Federal, State and local Government, Unions and Associations

You'll have heard Party Leaders visiting electorates and asking them to "get behind Col Jones!"

You'll be aware of the "support the progressive group" etc.

The only time elections become sensitive is within the proximity of or inside a polling booth.

    VOTE FOR COL

Yes TB and I agree that's what you would expect from a 2 party government political system...I just personally think that it wouldn't be right in just an Association of members type of thing because we are all together...there isn't us or them, there isn't fractions, all candidates are also members as well that the rep is suppose to be representing...we are just all together as one and the board member will still be representing the losing candidates thus their association members after the election.

  2. Just curious on whether any of you agree that it isn't appropriate for a current board member to be commenting on candidates standing at an election whether those comments are good or bad on a public forum.

I would have thought the "proper, decent and professional" thing to do of a current board member is NOT to comment on whether a candidate is good or not but rather just promote that people vote in a public forum.

  3. So is anyone having any more issues? Is the site back to normal in terms of access and speed?

Since I handed the server over to a management company I am noticing a slight delay sometimes when going between pages but this could just be coincidental as my phone using wifi through the same connection (router) as my pc is working well between pages of the site

  4. I'm easy Ian, just don't close the site down!!!

    Pud

No Mate, just trying to make it bigger and better but it is getting hard to change the road travelled on when you are going flat out on a freeway

  5. FT, the reference material etc is a part of what I refer to as extra features that I want to bring here but that is only one part of it as just that would suit you, and thanks for the feedback by the way, but other users want other features...out of all the site users only a handful use the chat room but that is a feature here for them, and it's here IF you ever wanted to use it, even just once...the same goes for other features and ALL the features added up make up the whole site and delivery to ALL needs.

An example is the one to one chat, useless to anyone not owning an aircraft but if you do and your distributor is on line, then they may think that is a great feature. The same could be said a for a private ABC Club Usergroup...totally useless for anyone not in that club or any club for that matter but every user that creates their own club usergroup section it would be great to have private chats about meeting at the club this week etc.

It all adds up to hopefully provide a better user experience

  6. Guys, I think you two FT and Ig have missed the point...there is no site without me and money...imagine if every forum web site owner said I am not going to pay money out of my pocket any more unless changes are made to produce an income to pay for it...if money wasn't poured into this site, the chances are you wouldn't have such a great highly contributed resource for you to use...before you came along Ig up to $10,000 a year was spent to create what you enjoy using now through advertising, server costs, purchasing of software etc etc etc, all elements that made this site as popular as it is today. Several sites started out the same time as this one and are now gone for example RecreationalFlying.net (which I ended up purchasing the domain name for from the then owner...more cost).

So Ig, it is all well and good to say no change but if those changes are what may provide a secure future for the site, for you to use, and free for you to use, and perhaps allow me to stop having to pay out money for you to use the site and hopefully allow me to get something back for the last 8 years, then do you think "who cares about Apple and Ipod" etc. Stability will always end up coming as we saw from all the old vBulletin bugs that were fixed one by one as I was told about them, and all the bugs that have been fixed between then and now with Xenforo and their bug fix releases.

Ig, feel free to make your first donation towards the site costs by clicking the Donate button, others have, as another $300 is due in about 2 weeks again...and then another $300 a month after that, and again and again...

This site WILL become feature rich for Aircraft Pilots and pay for itself and be stable...that is what change is all about...it's all about achieving something rather then nothing!

  7. Has been on and off from yesterday evening. Last dummy spit was about 11:04 am EST when none of the avatars or banner came up, a refresh and all I got was a black screen, then Problem loading page / Connection has timed out. All looks OK now.Sue

This is not good news Sue...it was at that time I turned the 1 to 1 chat on...if it has a dummy spit again please let me ASAP on 03 9444-8025...it is either settling down or there is a problem...thanks

  8. I would prefer stability and no changes over beta testing new features

But that won't pay the bills...provide greater benefits increases usage which results in organisations wishing to support the site, which provides income, which provides resources to acquire more features, which etc etc etc...the alternative is I go broke paying for something for everyone else which results in the site closing so everyone just moves somewhere else and they go broke broke and again etc etc etc

Another alternative FT is you give me $3,000 a year just to pay for the hosting costs and then another $x for the etc etc etc

I am hoping the extra features will result in an income by providing features that benefit users without any advertising or user pays system...imagine that, a whole new way of web site income to pay the bills by providing more rather then plastering a site with advertising...more on how this is going to be done later but an all-round win win for everyone initiated by "change" to the norms 001_smile.gif.2cb759f06c4678ed4757932a99c02fa0.gif

  9. Hi All

If you remember, for many years we used the forum software of vBulletin. Two years ago they released a new version that was saturated with bugs and I put up with it until early last year when I became ill and couldn't sustain the workload of managing the site, all the software updates, the bug fixes etc etc etc...so we changed over to Xenforo which whilst providing very limited features that I could give you here on the site, I was able to maintain a smaller workload in managing the site.

The opening of the Aircraft Enthusiasts site has allowed me a more recent look at the vBulletin software and I have found it now after 2 years of fixing by the developers, very much bug free, packed with features and very pleasant to use. In fact I have been able to make the Aviation Enthusiasts site very similar in its look and feel as this Xenforo one.

Naturally there always will be some slight differences and those that have been using this site over the years or visit other forum sites will know vBulletin as it is the most used forum software on the internet.

You can see vbulletin being used by simply visiting the Aviation Enthusiasts sister site.

The main benefits of vBulletin are:

    - A far superior Video Library

    - Ability for users to establish their own private usergroups (like a sub forum) for their Clubs, Aircraft Groups etc etc

    - A specific a powerful Classifieds Sections

    - A Blog System

    - A better Aviation News system

    - Personalised and customisable user profile page

    - Greater ability to have more powerful Pilot Resource Section

    - Greater variety of addons like "Likes" etc

    - Ability to have single login across other own sites using the same software

The main benefits of Xenforo are:

    - It's much more "prettier"

    - Native "Like" system rather then an addon

    - Slightly faster in display due to more modern code and less "extras" requiring loading

    - Uses Social Media in a more native or entwined way

    - Has "Alerts" system

    - Has threaded PMs/Conversations with ability to invite other users into the conversation

    - Fancier screens and popups

    - More "social" in its overall functionality at the cost of structured user features

Note: the cosmetic differences between the two are just that "cosmetic" so it can be done to a certain extent that you wouldn't know the difference between Xenforo or vbulletin. In fact I announced the going live of the Aviation Enthusiasts site on a vBulletin forum site and the first comment made was that it was Xenforo and not vBulletin...until someone told them to look closer...so just about anything can be done with cosmetics to a point that switching from Xenforo here to vBulletin may hardly be noticed.

So my question is...Which software given all the above, given that we always use to use vBulletin which has greater features and now very stable, given that you are currently using Xenforo here now, do you think we should use...do you see the benefits of vBulletin...do you fear change...are you happy with just the limited features we have here now...would you like to see more user features like your own usergroups, better video library etc??????????????????????
