  1. Hi All

Just to let you know of some site changes.

I have moved the country specific General Discussion forums into the top category of "General Forums". Currently for Australia and NZ I have also added sub forums like Announcements, Classifieds, Governing Bodies etc for you to use.

The original thought was to have a General Discussion forum for each of the different aviation sectors hence why there was a General Discussion forum in each category. However, I felt that there is potential for a lot of information to overlap each of the sectors, but then on the other hand, there could be information posted in a single General Discussion forum that would be irrelevant to all aviation sectors. It is just something that I think we will have to wait and see if the right decision has been made.

Please remember that this site/resource is here for every aviator from every country. I am trying to make the site as appealing as possible to everyone keeping the Australian content within an Australian section and the same for other countries whilst anything to do with Aircraft is naturally across all countries. Your help in determining where a thread/post best fits to the available forums is greatly appreciated which will prevent the need to move your thread/posts to another forum leaving you wondering where your post has gone. I will be spending some time over the next day or so moving a lot of threads to other forums to better reflect their subject matter. If you think you have lost something, please do a search first and see whether the thread comes up in a different forum then what you first thought.

A note about the Governing Bodies sub forum:

Recently I have been advised of some information that I have come to believe are some very disturbing antics of Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus), specifically its CEO Mr Steven Tizzard and possibly the Executive, S. Runciman, D. Ramsay and P. Middleton.

So I have come to realise that these people, in whom we have entrusted our lives to in the decisions they make along with the entire RAAus Board, need to be kept in check by all us members of the Association. For this reason I have brought back the Governing Bodies forum. Please note though, we do not want to travel down the same path as we once did to the point that site users were attacking each other. If we don't stand united in this then we will end up getting what we deserve. Please use the Governing Bodies Forum as a means to communicate with each other of our own opinions, what we hear or suspect may be happening in our industry whilst at the same time respect that each of us may have a differing opinion to our own. No site user should be made to feel anything other then having the right to say what they believe by all other site users. A 7 day suspension will be issued to anyone that makes a derogatory remark against another user or that user's opinion.

Governing Bodies forums will be created for each of the other countries as when or if it is shown they are needed by way of posts being made in their respective General Discussion forums.

Thanks and please remember...ALWAYS think before you go hurtling down the runway...is everything ok because take off is optional, but landing is mandatory

  3. You don't need to login to the shop as you can always checkout as a guest...the login just makes it easier by remembering your shipping address etc if you use the shop again another time...the shop software has always been problematic...but as you have said Guernsey, you can always give me a ring any time on 03 9444-8025

  4. Hi All

As you may know, managing this resource is a full time job and takes a lot of money to keep it going bringing you features and resources that I hope you find useful and enjoyable.

Last Christmas time I finally succumbed to the financial pressure and added a Donate button to the site as after all those years of using my own money there was just not enough of it to go around especially with the site growing so large that more and more resources in terms of hosting, along with its associated costs, were needed.

The site/resource is now even better quipped to provide for a greater future in terms of its hosting to provide some great new features that are coming and the longevity of its domain name registration, again requiring further financial investment...this has been achieved. This year we have seen the shop proceeds assisting in bringing a fantastic Chat Room facility to the site for users plus also this year we moved over to a completely new range of site software including the Xenforo forums.

I am still working on the One To One chat feature which whilst works, still has some issues for a few users which taking to sort out for you but that work will pay off and that feature will be available real soon. We also have up our sleeve new features of interactive presentations and the TV Station and much more but already providing the site is a full time job as it is, and available time is the only thing now hampering these extras from being provided although they also will have a monthly cost.

So please, if you feel you can help with time for a specific job on the site then please let me know or if you would like to help with a donation then I would be so grateful, there is the Donate Button in the right column of the Forums main page.

Thanks for your time and I hope Aircraft Pilots continues to provide you with help and support in your flying endeavors.

Merry Christmas and have a fantastic new year...Fly Safe!

  5. Heading, ground speed and fuel calculation

We plan to cruise at 70 knots CAS, and using the rule of thumb that TAS is 1.5% greater than CAS for each 1000 feet of altitude amsl we will increase CAS by 6% to arrive at a TAS of 75 knots at 3500 feet. That calculation (or perhaps 2% per 1000 feet) is near enough for navigation purposes but it is not actually correct; see the section on density altitude.

To complete our flight plan we have to estimate the heading to fly, the ground speed and the flight time for each route segment. We will use the mental arithmetic method outlined in section 4.2.

    1. Find the crosswind component of the forecast wind velocity by estimating the angle at which the wind meets each track, multiplying that by 1.5 and applying the result as a percentage of the wind speed:

    (a) Segment 1: track = 094° true, w/v = 060/10 knots: angle = 34 × 1.5 = 51% of 10 = 5 knots crosswind.

    (b) Segment 2: track = 061° true, w/v = 060/10 knots: angle = 1 × 1.5 = 0% of 10 = nil crosswind component.

    © Segment 3: track = 040° true, w/v = 060/10 knots: angle = 20 × 1.5 = 30% of 10 = 3 knots crosswind.

    2. Estimate the wind correction angle by dividing the crosswind component by the TAS and multiplying the result by 60:

    (a) Segment 1: crosswind = 5 kn; TAS = 75 kn: 5/75 × 60 = 4° wind correction angle.

    (b) Segment 2: crosswind = nil; = nil wind correction.

    © Segment 3: crosswind = 3 kn; TAS = 75 kn: 3/75 × 60 = 2° wind correction angle.

    3. Calculate the true heading, remembering that the wind correction is applied in the direction the wind is coming from; so that:

    (a) Segment 1: wind is from the left, correction angle is 4° and the heading is 094 minus 4 = 090° true.

    (b) Segment 2: wind is from dead ahead, correction angle is 0° and the heading is 061 minus 0 = 061° true.

© Segment 3: wind is from the right, correction angle is 2° and the heading is 040 plus 2 = 042° true.

    4. Convert the true headings to magnetic headings. There is an isogonal passing through the chart in the route planning module (the dashed purple line), which indicates the local variation is 10½°E. Applying that to our true bearing — remembering our aide-memoire "variation east, magnetic least" — and we have the following headings: 079°, 050° and 031° magnetic.

    img1.jpg.bdbecd4d58ce5d044610d4a128847c73.jpg

    5. Estimate the ground speed. Deduct the (acute) angle at which the wind meets the track from 115 (for angles up to 60°, use 105 for greater angles) and apply that as a percentage of the wind speed, to max 100%, subtract the result from TAS if wind coming from ahead to abeam, otherwise add; thus:

    (a) Segment 1: track = 094° w/v = 060/10 kn: angle = 34; 115 –34 = 81% of 10 = 8 kn headwind and ground speed = 67 knots.

    (b) Segment 2: track = 061° w/v = 060/10 kn: angle = 0; 115 –0 = 100% of 10 = 10 kn headwind and ground speed = 65 knots.

    © Segment 3: track = 040° w/v = 060/10 kn: angle =20; 115 –20 = 95% of 10 = 10 kn headwind and ground speed = 65 knots.

    6. Estimate the time interval for each leg dividing the distance by the ground speed and converting to minutes; thus:

    (a) Segment 1: distance = 74 nm; speed = 67 kn: 74/67 × 60 = 66 minutes.

    (b) Segment 2: distance = 52 nm; speed = 65 kn: 52/65 × 60 = 48 minutes.

    © Segment 3: distance = 33 nm; speed = 65 kn: 33/65 × 60 = 30 minutes.

Sum the segment ETIs to produce the estimated time en route [ETE]: 144 minutes.

    7. Calculate the total fuel needed including:

    (a) The fuel consumed from start-up at the departure airfield to the set-heading point (10 minutes)

    (b) Extra fuel consumed in the climb (two minutes per 1000 feet = 6 minutes, refer to fuel planning)

© The summed ETIs (144 minutes)

    (d) Fuel consumed in the circuit and landing at the destination airfield, including an allowance for delays in the circuit (10 minutes)

    (e) The fixed 30-minute reserve (see Note 1 below)

The total is 200 minutes — well within our full fuel endurance of 240 minutes and giving us 40 minutes margin on top of our fixed 30-minute reserve. We will use the fuel log during the flight.

(Note 1. The 30-minute absolute minimum reserve is for the average ultralight; if a particular RA-Aus aircraft has a fuel capacity and a forced landing capability more akin to that of a light GA aircraft then the standard 45-minute minimum reserve specified in the Civil Aviation Advisory Publication CAAP 234-1 should be employed.)
