  1. Greens want to close Essendon aiport

Greens' pledge to shut Essendon AirportElection 20109 Aug 10 @ 12:02pm by Julia Adler

Greens candidate Tim Long wants Essendon Airport shut within the next term.

THE Greens have vowed to shut down Essendon Airport - no matter which major party wins government at the election.

Do the greens have a realistic change of closing the airport? Tell us below.

Greens candidate for the seat of Maribyrnong Tim Long said the airport should be shut down in the next term of government.

“It needs to be closed for the local community and whatever that takes needs to be done,” Mr Long said.

“It needs to be done now and needs to be done in the next term of government.”

Mr Long said the airport site should be developed into a “world class, sustainable community” as a residential and commercial precinct.

Closing the airport to aviation had long been a Greens policy, he said. “It’s been our position all along.” Mr Long said.

“We don’t say things just because they are vote winners.

“Closing it conforms with numerous aspects of our polices, not least our health policies, because of the noise and air pollution.”

The pledge comes two weeks after Maribyrnong Labor MP Bill Shorten said a re-elected Labor government would not close the airport within the next term of office.

But with the Greens set to increase their numbers in the Senate at the upcoming election, but highly unlikely to form government in their own right, Mr Long said the Greens would achieve their goal by lobbying whoever came into power.

“We’ll use communication, negotiation and consultation,” he said.

“We’ll continue to talk and negotiate with all interested parties with the intention of closing it.”

so they want to close the airport due to environmental and pollution concerns, well, just how much pollution will all the cars, air conditioners, electricity use, waste products, and the construction of this community and commercial centre contribute compared to an airport

  2. in the broad sence, if the call is a genuine phrase or instruction, then acknowledge with your call sign, if its just in response to general chat or question, then just a double click

eg, ABC traffic is a cessna in your 2 oclock at 2000 ft, you would reply with your callsign.

or if your turning final, and an aircraft on the ground asks if you dont mind if he crosses the runway, then just a double click

  3. another thing to think about when comparing aviation to other forms of transport, such as rail and road, is the Aviation, and shipping are the ONLY forms of transport that dont need infrastructure to be built along its entire route. i wonder if the green have factored that into their plans for more rail and road. or any other group for that matter, this fact alone should ensure aviation is promoted.

  4. I Miss the Concorde, The most beautiful aircraft ever built, and a greater technological achievement than going to the moon. 064_contract.gif.1ea95a0dc120e40d40f07339d6933f90.gif

I was fortunate enough in my early years as an engineer to work on the Concorde when it was in yd on a few occasions, firtly and AF Concorde when a brake hydraulic line bracket failed on the Port U/C leg, and a few minor Galley repairs on a BA Concorde.

Sad to think we have the technology to build another Concorde, but the cancer of politics, Noise and general whingers and the extreme greenies will ensure another is never built again... just more and more bigger uglier airplanes.:DirtDOG:

Sad, it would have been the perfect airliner in these parts, vast expanses of ocean to get across at mach 2, and the desert, even from 65,000 ft, a sonic boom isnt loud, and amid the background noise of a city, a sonic boom would be difficult to notice.

  5. I havnt read the said article yet, but the Only time i will and have overtaken in the circuit is under the direction of ATC at bankstown. I will not overtake another aircraft in the circuit at an uncontrolled airport, if stuck behind someone doing cross country circuits, and there is no one following me, then make my touch n go's, Stop and go's. or if your really impatiant, then communicate with the wide circuit pilot and advise/ask if he/she doesnt mind you turning early crosswind/base.

  6. think i am finally getting it!

Flyingphot, good enough for your strip yet? :)

  7. Dont forget, the Nowra Restriced areas are Deactivated after 2 Pm on Friday, and all weekend! then just fly on through making the usual calls, as CTAF procedures apply when the tower is and restricted areas are deactivated.

If in doubt, call up Sydney radar as you are passing wollongong, and request the status of the Restricted area, syd radar is 124.55, or listen in to the ATIS/AWIS at Nowra.

  8. Next week is Forced landings.. bring it on.

Forced landings arnt too bad, remember, you can practice the procedure at home, either on flight sim, or simply sitting on the lounge and going through the checklists.

Tip, dont just remember the checks, actually make a point of doing what th check is, eg, dont just say fuel, check, actually check the fuel taps, the quantity and pressures etc.

  9. flightygirl first solo flight to another airfield <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaMyKAnpczE&hl=en_US&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaMyKAnpczE&hl=en_US&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

and for all the legal types, yes, she was supervised solo by senior instructor at Wollongong, and a CFI apon arriving at jaspers within the 25 NM limit for non cross country endorsed pilots.
