well, our new baby is home, safe at Wollongong...
i wont write too much but let the pics do the talking, everyone likes pictures right?
all packed at Caloundra ready for departure to Wollongong! 664 NM away.
saing goodbye to Caloundra
goodbye Bribie Island
tracking down the west coast of the Stradbroke Islands.
The Gold Coast!
no words needed.
the gold coast Hinterland, times like these i am glad we bought a Savannah. landing strips everywhere!
Finally clear of Coolangatta CTA, track back to the coast, Byron Bay.
Ballina. First stop, to top up fuel, and stretch the legs.
Litte did we know at this point, we had a minor problem.
Yep, Flat tyre. went flat somewhere between Caloundra and here, as i knew it was flat immediately on touchdown.
Fortunatly Howard Hughes of Lightwing fame was there to supply us with a new Tube, a helping hand and tool to change the tyre.
Top bloke he is, and also looking for RAAus Instructors!! give him a call!
now 3 hrs behind schedule (if there was one) Evans Head.
Weather started looking ominous. though it was almost all off the coast.
interesting sight somewhere south of Evans HEad, and north of Coffs Harbour CTA.
This is why we need the CTA endorsement, sky was clear over Coffs harbour, but just inland outside CTA was a different story, only way through was through "the gap" i would have loved to get a clearance through Coffs, but didnt like my chances without a transponder.
preying the gap doesnt close up, but note the clear sky just on the other side. though being able to fly at 35 kts safely if needed in this terrain does help with the confidence level.
through the gap into clear skies for the rest of the day.
my favourite beach, Hat Head beach, 12 Km long, and totally deserted.
with 1 hr of daylight left, we decided to overnight at one of my all time favourite spots.
golf fairway quality runway!
and a simply stunning location. Bob and Nelly are great Hosts, and will bend over backwards to make you welcome, they even took us to dinner at the local Hotel. great people!
morning view from our room. note, light fog. is a kookaburra sleeping on your aircraft a good thing? i think it is.
departing camden haven early, tracking direct to Cessnock, for breakfast.
Sadly 30 miles past Taree, the fog cover was thick, and after hearing Virgin, Jetstar and Aeropelican flight holding and conducting missed approaches into Williamtown due to fog, we returned to Taree. waited 1 hr for fuel guy to arrive, and fog to lift.
after listening to the RPT flight make it into Williamtown fog free from the coast, we tracked towards Nelson bay, and the lane coastal over stockton, yep, fog was lifting!
Pod of Dolphins off stockton beach
we remained coastal all the way to the V1 lane off sydney.
good old Bondi, wonder what the Non pilots are doing?
the rest of the flight was direct to Wollongong and 4854's new home.
Thanks to Bill and Jen for their marvellous hospitality even after we took his baby from him! and for being a part of one of our best weekends ever! hope to catch up again soon.
Sorry we couldnt make it out west tomo, but we will sometime soon!
oh and i mustn't forget the GA pilots in the cessna for helping pull our aircraft out of harms way with the flat tyre at Ballina.
and a final cool shot i like from the trip.

im not really concerned to much on how they work, more, what is required in the aircraft. transponder plus antennae plus encoder? does the encoder attache to the back of a standard altimeter? do you need an encoder? is just the transponder and antennae all you need?
-
Gday all, i am no good at aviaonics at all, and no noting of how to install a transponder, i have an aircraft that might require a transponder in the near future, and basically, i am asking, what is needed for a complete working transponder setup? do you just buy the transponder and antennae, install it, wire it up and off you go? how does it get height information to transmit?
thanks in advance
Rob.

ahh the old 940, dont worry, it will be fun again when the new engine arrives... but the old LSA does sort the men from the boys!
-
i think your being to hard on yourself, you will get it in good time, its only been a few hrs so far.

How much do you want that licence?better watch out ultralights! -
Wow Flightygirl, Im impressed! nice first impression. and i had nothing to do with it! dont worry, that Savannah will be ours! :)
-
im not 100% positive on this, but once you have proof of them billing you for the AVID/ASIC and your licence, your free to continue training and access aiports till the official paperwork arrives.
2-6 weeks! thats pretty good for casa, took them 18 Months for me!

Dont forget the reaching part, sort of rules out all jabirus...
oh, and you might like to comment on this i found...

nahh lack of screen doesnt bother me, its a 170 degree wide angle lens, so as long as its pointed in the general direction, you frame it pretty well.
-
I have mounted my gopro on the tail of a jabiru a few times, but you notice the camera is only mounted on the far back edge of the lower strake, clear of the elevator, and no where near the rudder, turbulence from the camera does not pass over any aircraft surface, and its tethered to the tie down point, so if it ever does come loose, it will not fall and hit anyone thats earthbound. and yes, i even weighed it and checked weight and balance before putting it there.
the strength of the suction cup is dependent on the surface condition, so make sure its very clean, no oil, dirt or dust, and also, no cracks in the paint either. fortunatly the suction cup gopro use has a vacuum chamber, albeit small and also lever with over centre lock to create the vacuum
-
I use the GoPro HD, have 2 of them, awesome little camera. use it for far more than just flying.
and for videos like this, suction cup hold very strong even at 100 kts, plus, did not move even on friends motorcycle at 280 Kph!

or the most recent video, Flightygirl making her first unassisted landing..
camera is simply suctioned to the top of the windscreen upside down.
unfortunatly being HD, the movie files are huge and you need a decent computer to edit them, mac laptop does them fine.

No contest, Military or civilian
-
I laughed! though i think the controller might have baited you with the call, by replying with runway 11 Right clear touch and go,
-
Jabiru 170s, well, our schools one does the same. actually its more common than not, i cant remeber any aircraft i have flown that drained both tanks evenly, unless you turn one tank off, and drain for 1 for 15 mins then regularly change tanks. but im not a fan of closing any tanks off inflight, unless your flying something with 4 tanks etc.
-
how about a SP6?

<param name="movie" value="
type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385">according to comments by the poster of the video, after the engine had the overrev, it cut out, if the engine failed, then he would have lost an immense amount of energy in the high G turn, and only had enough energy left to roll level and ditch. or the overspeed could have been a CSU governor failing?sorry about the language...
-
Welcome! learn to look past the looks to the Inner beauty of the Savannah! though a nice fast Jabiru would by sweet!
-
dont worry about the repercussions of its history being on display here, as you said, its Your aircraft now, and Safety first always! even if that means opening a can of worms from the past.

I fly from bankstown almost every day, and still havnt come up with a way to guarantee you dont miss a radio call,I have close to 25,000 hours, and I still haven't figured out how to guarantee that I will not miss a radio call, in the presence of non-aviation background noise, and anything from an iPod is most certainly non-aviation background noise.except for keeping a good listening watch, a quality headset. and being aware of the other traffic around you, listen to the tower instructions to other aircraft and generally being situationally aware. and as i tell my students, if in doubt, ask.
as for the music, it drops volume when a signal is received from any source, and sometimes the volume will drop and the transmission will be very quite, or unreadable, but by the fact the music paused, means i am now aware of that call. even if it was from someone reporting at a CTAF some 100 miles away and receiving a very week signal which i normally wouldn't have heard over the usual background noise.
one memorable day, at YSBk, i heard a transmission but was unsure of its recipient, so i asked the tower.
Jabiru **** "can you repeat last transmission please?"
YSBK twr " Jabiru **** last transmission was not for you"
Jab **** "sorry tower, just like to keep aware of other traffic"
Unknown aircraft " good call"
and flying from bankstown, im sure you can appreciate the need for awareness on some real busy days. hence, awareness is everything..

at bankstown the request is made on ground freq, usually followed by an instruction to report ready in run up bay on ground. who then will tell you taxi to holding point and contact tower, or delay depending on traffic.
