  1. the rules about airspace changed recently in Russia, 10,000 ft and lower is class G except for 10 mile radius around international airports, 10,000 to 15,000 class E, and class A above. very simple. and falls in line with ICAO airspace class standards and according to the story, the Russian government will try its best to promote personal and general aviation in Russia, due to size of the nation, and its importance to the growth of regional russia. now if only CASA and OZ pollies could see the similarities there

  2. cruise speeds can vary between different aircraft of the same type, our savvy cruises in still air at 87 Kts indicated at 5100 rpm or 70 kts in rough air, though other savvys will cruise a little faster at 90 kts, due to being built a little lighter, or smaller tyres, or different prop type or pitch, with full fuel and baggage to MTOW our cruise speed will drop by about 4 or 5 kts.

there are many variables that can effect actual cruise speeds

  3. Gday Josh, it was good to meet you at "the Brush" the other day, fantastic to hear you are on the right track for a very long and rewarding flying career! and yep,, an instructor rating will help in getting your flying to a whole new level of accuracy and understanding. also good to hear the Cheetah will be gracing the skies again soon Merry Christmas and a great new year

  4. i cant wait for Garmin, or any other GPS manufacturer, or developer to come up with a Augmented reality system, imagine looking through a transparent panel, simiar to HUD, but instead of flight information on the screen, you can see the airspace steps, boundaries, flight path flight director etc, all on the screen augmenting the view through the windscreen, not to mention approach plates, ILS, RNAV, NDBs paths in 3d right in front of you to fly.

i dont thinks its far away, we now have the ERSA and Approach data on mobile format in the cockpit, thanks to Rowan, transparent LCD screens are available, moving map technology is already i use, all it will take is someone to write the software and build it.

back to the app, what if it could use the GPS and location data to automatically give you the ERSA pages and DAP data thats closest to you at that time, or within a set radius, that would be sweet, help in planning diversions etc. even better if/when CASA allow it to be used inflight as a legitimate approved copy of said data

  5. looking at the current VNC, and ERSA, Wagga is still a CTAF with its own discreet frequency. in G airspace under class E with a LL of 8500.

though the reasoning behind athe proposed airspace changes are beyond me. class E to 700 Ft.. seriously....

  6. The quickest way is to do an airframe mechanics apprenticeship, and when studying the subjects for that trade, you can do the relevant LAME Licence subject at the same time. You come out with trade quals, your Licence subjects and exam passes, then it's only a matter of getting the hours in the log book (trade journal)

  7. Gday everyone, Tomorrow we are planning a trip to Wagga Wagga, and am after some local tips or advice for flying into, parking, and gettting in and out of the airport, if weather doesnt co-operate, we might have to stay overnight and find parking.

Reading the ERSA has proven daunting, and actually doesnt mention anything in regards to GA parking, where you can park or access your aircraft. any advice on such matters would be fantastic..

    Thanks in advance,

    Rob.

  8. at the present time you need paper copies of the relevent ERSA pages, but this is only because CASA and its lawers havnt updated their policies to the digital era yet.

the ozrunways app is great even though you cant legally use it in flight...... yet. it not only is the ERSA but also the Runway distance Suppliment, the DAP east and west, AIP and GEN publications.

its great in use with pre flight planning as it is easy access to approach plates in the apps, and helps in situational awareness when planning your approach to an airport, where to expect aircraft flying the NDB/VOR/GNSS approaches for each runway etc

now i just hope the subscription costs comes in at a reasonable price....considering its still not really legal to use yet. but once it becomes a legal copy and is up to date, then if the cost is better than or matches the cost of the paper copies, well, then ill get a smaller nav bag.

  9. Jabirus are built using Epoxy resin, so Acetone is the preferred cleaner for use on Epoxies, MEK is a great degreaser/solvent also, but its nasty stuff.

a good solvent degreaser for Polycarbonates is Petroleum Ether.

but always test ins a small area first and give it a day just to be sure, i have used Acetone on a repair of early LSA Jabirus.

  10. just a quick video trip report of a day flying around Lightning Ridge. November 2010.

According to Locals, the Coocoran Dam fills once every 20 yrs on average, but actually Floods once every 100 yrs or so. its currently Flooded, and apparently already receded a few metres before our trip.

Trip from Wollongong to Lightning ridge via Bathurst, to catch up with Dave, took about 4.5 hrs, and used approx 70 Ltrs with a refuelling stop at Walgett for the trip home, again via Bathurst, for a toilet stop. TAS is 85 Kts and fuel burn of 17 ltr/hr average.

Its good to see some RAAus activity at Lightning ridge, where we met a lovely guy named Ashley who has just completed a Jodel.. after hearing mixed stories about Lightning ridge, i was quite surprised at just how friendly everyone is, and i can see why many people who visit, never leave...
