Does your ultralight have a transponder?
Kyle Communications replied to danny_galaga's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
As I get older maybe my comprehension is up to crap..your right..I just reread what KG said and you are correct...I am agreeing with him DOH!!! I think ADSB should be in every aircraft..get rid of the old Mode C crap..its a radar ping not aircraft to aircraft and also aircraft to ground -
Does your ultralight have a transponder?
Kyle Communications replied to danny_galaga's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
I totally disagree Being able to see other ADSB aircraft out there when NOT flying in CTA is a good thing. Would be nice is the SE2 also saw Mode C transponders but alas no. I think in the future all aircraft will be required to have ADSB out be it a EC device or a full blown Mode S For ultralight RAA style of aircraft I think it would be great to see where ALL the kamakazis are. The flying ability and decisions made from other pilots has me worried. I am not sure if its the training that happening now or the lack of training but there are so many pilots out there that just dont seem to give a sh*t about ops manuals or ERSA info when it comes to approaches or radio. I have certainly noticed it in the past 5 years or so. At least if you can see where everyone is you must be then able to make better informed decisions. EC devices are direct comms in most cases depending on other things but all the FR24 and the other one I cant think of right now all have feeder sites and no matter what Airservices has on the gound most likely you will see the data from a feeder on your Ipad or whatever Pad style nav device you have -
Skippy..its a long story and the less I put out there the better. The current committee has a new direction forward. The club members voted last year for a major change in the people running the place. Our AGM is next month and I believe the current commitee will most likely be voted back in due to the changes we have made...but lets say it the charges are soon to happen. Thats why I am getting this device ready.

Now thats how it should be run..the difference is the council does not run our airfield we do as a club and so are responsible for all the costs like fencing and maint and buildings etc The club does not want to make a fortune only get enough funds to run the place without going in debt and expand the facilities. Our biggest cost by far is the runway maint due to the now extreme overuse by commercial ops

The other thing about my radio project is when listening to all the calls through out the day..it is amazing just how many crap radios there are..so another thing with the monitoring is to be able to notify the owner of the aircraft to get it fixed...Ycab at the next ERSA will have radio as mandatory
-
There is no alternative in our airfields case....well there are two really..close down all commercial ops or charge landing fees to the ones that are doing all the damage ...its pretty simple. Of course there is another..close the airfield...let everyone who owns a hangar there lose all of those assets and let the council sell it all off for housing or industrial land
-
Ycab aeroclub is the leasee of the whole area from the MBRC..we maintain the airfield and all its facilites and pay the total insurance for the airfield and hangars. We also build the hangars that are privately owned and rent some of them also charge the hangar owners a lease and insurance fee per year which is very reasonable. It is not a public airfield. All club members are charged a small maint fee each year and that has been fine previously but since the huge increase in ops by commercial operations this is where it has all been falling apart. The airfield was developed by the club and its members some 25 to 30 years ago so no public money was ever used to get it to where it is now To be honest I would be happy if we got rid of most of all the commercial ops and just stayed with the private ops and small amount of RAA style aircraft training and I have no doubt that we would have been no worse off as we had been before and there would be no need to charge landing fees. Why the sudden increase in commercial ops...well I wont say anything about that but I am sure you can guess

Kiwi of course that is the fact...someone has to pay eventually....but user pays is the only fair system. The damage and wearing out of our runways by the obscene amount of movements now at our airfield is just crazy. We used to just maintain with club members before all this govt subsidized traing hex style has come in. At Ycab now there are 3 rec flying schools and 2 of them do some GA training and we have another that has 6 GA aircraft and about 5 or 6 helicopters and its literally non stopn all day almost every day of the week I have made a radio monitoring unit that gets all the radio calls automatically and records them. This then gets decoded to get the call signs..same as what Avdata do to be able to gauge TO and Landings. I have been testing it this past couple of weeks from my house before it goes down to the airfield for some more fine tuning...I was shocked at how many movements there are on a daily basis..this is why the airfield is being torn apart. How many calls do you think there is in one week of ops..............over 10000 !!!!!!!. How do I know this???...every radio call is recorded when the mute of the monitoring radio and a single file is created. After 1 week there are 10,000 files. 99.9% of those files are genuine calls Now some are from Caloundra but not as many as Ycab...I am tailoring it so I can pretty much clip all the caloundra ones within reason. On some calcs I have done and listening out of that 10000 there are more than 6 to 7000 for YCAB..base about 3 calls per circuit so thats more than 2000 landings per week !!!! and I believe that is conservative Flying training is expensive now and its just going to be one of those things. Unless someone gives us 150k + a year out of the goodness of their hearts where does the money come from...private ops at Ycab are well in the minority now. maybe the average private op is about once a week at best.

Ycab will soon be introducing landing fees. These will only be for commercial aircraft and flying schools regardless. All receational and private aircraft will be exempt These fees will NOT be going to council coffers they are direct to the aeroclub to provide the huge maintenance bills that are accruing because of overuse of the runways and taxiways This is fair...user pays for those that make money from use of the airfield...this is how all airfields should be run. Another very happy customer -
Jeff Tonkin at PSB is the guy I deal with for insurance...he was always excellent and came up with the best price

The wires coming out have the outputs..you can get them with the PNP versions there and also NPN...the LED built in is just a indicator of course..with the wire output because it is a switch basically..a electronic switch with a couple of small parts you can make the indication on your panel the way you want There is a whole raft of them and about 20 bucks so you could put 4 on the outside and have the 4 segments displayed on the dash easily Belite (Radiant Instruments) use them although theirs is quite expensive but is a ready to go solution He calls it a bingo as in last fuel so a low level but with more its more levels of course

There is a sensor you can buy pretty cheap Jack that you could put on the outide of your tank..a couple of them for levels to bring a LED on. a small bargraph with 3 or 4 of them for fuel levels..they are ultrasonic so pass through almost any material https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32623722632.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.507a366bZDhcxh&algo_pvid=37fd848d-728b-4e0c-a17b-dce9c9cee751&algo_exp_id=37fd848d-728b-4e0c-a17b-dce9c9cee751-5&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"59376291433"}

In summer time down here I plan to be back on the ground no later than 9am...it gets bloody rough after that and its not fun anymore

Paint ?
Kyle Communications replied to skippydiesel's topic in Aircraft Building and Design Discussion
I used to use Glasurit base coat paint on all my RC turbine jets...lovely paint to use and great coverage with small amount of paint..the killer is to be careful with how much clear coat you put on. Thats what gains the weight...Often they paint 5 and 8 coats of clear. But if your careful then the very light coat then a heavier coat after it tacks off and your done. Glasurit is great but expensive also...from what I have seen lately though all good auto paints are getting very expensive now -

Hi Mike...I have printed a couple of those holders as well ...how good is that new kevlar cable...I got both my Zulu 2 upgraded to the Zulu 3 versions I took that $300 upgrade option they had out. but the sockets cant be too far away from where you clip the holder onto...Might have a look at seeing where I can put them when wearing the holder Hank the paint is Akzonobel 3000 its used by Airbus for all their aircraft. Its fantastic paint and is a basecoat system. I dont think I would want to pay the normal price. This was paint that Virgin uses on their aircraft but they changed colour slightly and we managed to pick it up for a song..cheaper than car paint by a long way. The spray painter told me it was the best paint he has ever sprayed...the next one wont be getting that paint 🙂 -

Eprop is such a great company to deal with...always get back to me almost any day of the week. Ok they are very satisfied with the new Jabiru prop. The issue is they just do not have enough space at the current factory to keep doing what they are doing. You may have seen some posts where they are currently building a huge new factory. They are pushed to the limits with orders and space So the upshot of this is until they get the new factory up and running they wont be producing the new jab prop or any of the undercarriages because they just dont have the physical room to store all the molds and for the new machinery they have designed and built to make them all. They should have this operation by "spring" so for them thats early in the new year. -

I used that stuff originally and was going to get some but Danny said just to use the pink telflon tape as these are a BSP fitting so they have the tapered thread and he has always used this. He has been building and flying for more than 30 years. The pink stuff doesnt fail with petrol and it helps a lot with the tapered threads. Thats why I used it. If it becomes a issue then I will change it -

Update to whats been happening on the 90% to go Got some of the Carlisle tyres for the mains from the guy down south. What a drama with the tyres trying to fit them and the tubes. I think I posted I had to get Danny to give me a hand but the tubes supplied dont fit very well at all and I managed to stuff a tube it got clamped between the hubs and stuffed it. I had the original tubes from the Carlisles that were on her originally so got one of those and it fitted so much better. but getting the tyres off the rims is just a nightmare. So I made a adhock puller so I could somehow press the tyre down on the rims to get one side free to replace the tube...it made it much easier but it was still crap. I think I will refine it and maybe start making a few to put out there as it seems to be a common issue. I thought one of the guys who went through 3 tubes the same way I did was doing it wromg...not really it is just a terrible thing to try to do. Been working on the fuel system so the feed from the header tank goes to a throw away filter same as I had in the girlfriend..they are cheap and very good then off to the pump. Used a new fuel tap on the floor with a far better operating handle so thats halfway done. The fuel line will go to a gascolator mounted on the engine side of the firewall where the electric pump is on the std savannahs this again is as I had it on the girlfriend..A bit difficult working in that hole...dont know how I did it when I was 40kg heavier. I was testing the current draw of the pump for danny so he could size his breakers for his Esqual rebuild and discovered how dirty the Facet pump is...I cant believe they dont have a freewheeling diode inside...sent my DC power supply a nice voltage bump up to 14.7V when I was feeding it 14V so I have put a diode on the pump that will stop any noise when its on... In the pics is the new circuit I will use as standard now for Mabel and the RANS S-21. How many times have you taken off and forgot to turn off the elec pump also if you did lose fuel pressure from the engine driven pump and you didint see it the first thing would be the engine coughing or it stops. So this mod is pretty easy and gives you a manual option and auto. It requires a pressure switch they are about $45 and this goes in to outlet side of your mechanical pump the switch has 2 contacts NO and NC. When the engine starts it will switch at 2bar so you use the normally closed side of the pressure switch to do the wiring in my diagram. You have a centre off switch on the dash. Auto/Off/Manual So once you go to start the engine flick the switch to auto and the elec pump will start then leave it to build the pressure like normal...or you could select manual and do it the old way then once the engine is started flick it to auto the elec pump should turn off. If your any reason the mech pump loses pressure during takeoff or anywhere in the flight the electric pump will switch on and you will see a big flashing LED every time that pump is running. So in mid flight if it comes on you know you have had a failure but the engine should still be running fine, Its pretty simple but I think also effective and a extra level of safety. Currently doing some plumbing of oil and water on the engine and will get back onto the avionics...one thing though I havent decided on is where to mount my headset jacks....didnt really like where I mounted them in the girlfriend..there must be a better solution...any suggestions or pics would be appreciated Mark
