  1. G'day Jarryd....

The Drifter I'm training in is the instructors...

Now I don't no much about owning an aircraft, because I don't yet...but hope to in time to come...

But a Drifter for instance, you can pick up a pretty good one for about 10-15k, But then you got to remember maintenance costs every so often, or you can do a lot of it yourself if you get some training for it...

But I would get training with your instructor in his aircraft first, and that way you can sort of get a feel for what you might like to own down the track...and that way, your also using his undercarriage when learning to land;)

    Hope this helps,

  2. Thanks for all the input guys... It looks like there's about a 50-50 to those that like watches to those that don't!!

But at present I don't have one, 'cause me other one the face got broken and fell off, and then I lost the hour hand of all things, so it's not much use! and I do miss it... so thats why I'm looking around for another one, and I had the idea about the pilots watch thing, but I new that not many people seem to like them. So thats why I thought it worth the asking... and now I don't know which way to go!!

    Cheapest probably...

Anyway better go and get ready for some flying... Oh Gee, got to leave in 10 minutes...

  3. d) It depends on the individual.

Well I'm not so sure about this because I've never touched alcohol at all, and never will!

But I did read somewhere (I think) that it does depend on the individual, because one person can read real high after say 8hrs, while someone else can read clear at 4hrs, and they drunk the same amount... so it does depend on the way your body reacts to it, and how quickly it get's rid of it... best way would be I think, is to get yourself one of those self testers, and test yourself before you go flying, that way you will never get unstuck... you could still read high after 24hrs! problem is if you read high on the authority's tester your gonna be chopped no matter how long ago you took the drink.

    Just my 2 cents worth

  4. Wow Thats Awesome!G'day Michael, Tomo.

My name's Jarryd and I am 1 1/2 years younger than Tomo. I, like Michael, dont really have much to do with flying, but would love to! May I ask, what kind of money have you spent so far on this hobby of yours, flying? How do you pay for it?

Would love to hear some advice! Do you actually own an aircraft? Would love to learn more, and start getting into it!

    Cheers,

    Jarryd

    G'day Jarryd,

Ok, money wise it costs me $130 an hour training in a Drifter aircraft, and you do (an average say of about 15hrs before solo) so that's about $1950, but I've told myself it'll probably cost somewhere around the $3500 dollar mark with some X-country stuff, so it's pretty costly from a young man's point of view, but if you keep saving each day, (and don't spend it on food!) or game's etc... but on flying books, and learning to fly, you will be surprised that it won't take as long as you think...

Believe me, that's what I did...

Also look for ways of making money, Like myself, I got into doing wood work, and made and sold woodturned pen's that I made on the lathe, I started off buying a cheap lathe from M10, and worked my way up to bigger and better stuff, and now I've got more tool's than most people my age... also in the mechanical side as well...

I made promotional pen's out of Australian woods and got business names engraved into them, also wooden cases etc... that went really well, and I managed to upgrade my stuff, because of more and more orders...

Now that I've finished school (yes I did all that while I was still at school) and also work for my Dad, I don't have as much time to do it, but I still go to local carnivals and things with my little stand, and try and sell them, also carrying around a case full of different types with me most places I go, Just is case I get someone talking and wanting to buy one;)

So yeah, that's what I do to make money for my flying, I started making the pen's at about 15...

I also live on a property which makes it possible to do that sort of thing, and great parents who supported me and helped me get underway with something like that...

So I've now probably bored the heck out of you with my ranting on, so I'll leave it there...

    Have fun,

  5. G'day Jarryd, 098_welcome.gif.81ff07d492568199326e4f64f78d7bc6.gif to the site...

Mate you will get blown away with this site, and you will be glad you found it if you like anything that fly's:thumb_up::thumb_up:

Your 16, well I'm 17and a bit and have just started my flight training a month or so ago, have got about 8 hrs up flying a Drifter aircraft (Awesome fun:thumb_up:). I go for another lesson tomorrow and will be mastering my landings hopefully:blush:...

    Have fun,

  6. I'm up for a new watch, and I've had a bit of a look around and thought that seeing that I will be a pilot before to long, it would be cool to get a pilot's watch (or one with a compass etc... on it)

So question is, has anyone got some good pointers on good brands, or styles? also being in the cheapish range would be rather important for my well being!!

    Thanks

  7. Maybe he needed 2 make a Shift and regain Control of his life with an Alternate Home, by Deleting his current Home and Inserting a new 1 he could start a new Page either Up or Down hopefully something a little closer 2 the Tab, He just neede 2 make a Start and Enter this new life with some F4T ,the End

    Very Clever

  9. .maybe RA-Aus should look at getting in on the act and distributing it to members.

It's not hard to be put on the mailing list...

I've been getting them for a couple of yrs now, and I just rang up and asked them to put me on the mailing list, and they did!

I love reading them, especially the close shave storys:thumb_up: and recommend them to averyone...

Just put an application in for an ARN, it's free and put's you on the mailing list as well...

  10. Well G'day and 098_welcome.gif.81ff07d492568199326e4f64f78d7bc6.gif aboard Michael,

Mate flying is absolutely full of fun, and it really is a disease you know... once hooked it's hard to get it out of your mind...

I've just started flight training a month or so ago, and I just got back from a lesson now actually, 1.4 hours this morning, doing landings and circuits, Stalls etc... great fun:thumb_up:

I'm not sure how old you are, but I got the flying bug when I was about 13, now 4 and a half years later I've finally started, so If my calculation was correct I'm now 17 1/2, so still pretty young:thumb_up:

Keep it up, keep saving your piggy bank, and I'm sure we'll hear about your flying lessons in the near future... By the way, Did know that you can fly solo with an RA-Aus certificate at the age of 15? And actually even start before then?

    Have fun,

  11. Perhaps they are not teaching short field as most ultralights land pretty short anyway. It is a pitty as it can be a very useful skill on occasion.

Yeah I'm taught power on as well for short fields, etc... He's a glider instructor as well, so good judgment of where you think you will touch down is being drummed into me...

It's just that, today watching a few planes cruise around in Toowoomba, some fella's have this huge long downwind and then once on finals there off and on the throttle to keep the speed/hight under control (GA fella's:laugh:) It was just interesting to see the way different people do things...

  12. Just interested to hear what others do for there approaches...

My instructor teaches the glide approach (engine on idle), so if your engine quits it doesn't really matter (as much)... and I thought that was the proper way to do it, (because it makes sense), but I've seen a lot of power on approaches recently and so that's how this question came too...

    Thanks,
