One thing you have to consider in this sort of aircraft is - 544kg is MTOW, empty is 313kg. So it's not a lot of difference, as in, you'll be operating near the MTOW most of the time. But most of us know STOL comes typically at the cost of cruise speed, yet here we have an example of numbers that may indicate some kind of super wing.....So some basic questions:Is the 20 knots stall at MTOW which it should be or it should not be quoted?
Is that with the flap equipped model?
Is the 20 Kts IAS (indicated airspeed) or CAS (corrected airspeed) because there can be a significant difference at those low speeds?
David
At this stage the aircraft should be fully certified, factory built for training applications in a few more months he said. So more accurate performance data will probably be available then.
But yes, it all seems a little unreal, that is why you have to take it for a fly, it is pretty amazing. You don't need to use your rudders much either, I rolled it from 45* one way to the other without rudder input, and it rolled on its nose as if you had use it. I wasn't being gentle either, it's no doubt an extremely stable aircraft.
One thing I will add also - its 20kts stall may make it a STOL aircraft, but You'd have difficulty dropping in over the trees to plant it down like that. With a 12:1 glide or better it's a pretty flat approach, if you can see what I mean. It may work at a steeper approach, but you may need reverse thrust to keep the speed under control!

Ok, so we've all heard Cameron and Slarti go on about these Morgan contraptions... and I've always just thought - "Oh yeah, it's just another aircraft" and never really gave it much thought. Saw them at Temora etc... Pretty cool I spose, and that is about as far as it got.
Well I got talking to Gary Morgan, and had a bit of a look at his Blue Sierra 100 up at Monto. Looks great I thought, removable wings... that's pretty handy. 130kt cruise... "Wha...?!" I was amazed at that... pretty good! "So what sort of stall speed are we talking?" I asked - thinking somewhere along the lines of 40 odd kts. "20kts" he said... Wow! My jaw was getting a little lower each time.
I left and went and caught up with some others, and checked out some other aircraft, but just couldn't get that Sierra out of my head. I'm gonna have to have a fly of that I said to myself. So back over to him and few more pictures, and Tim was pretty busy taking others for a fly as well. So once he landed and taxied up again, I asked him "enough fuel for another?" "Yep" came the reply... so I bundled in, and - could have stayed there. Could have just been the fact I had done 3hrs of speed skating the night before, then standing around most of the day. But I don't think so.
Four point harness was soon doing it's job, and the 3300 fired up. Taxied out using toe brakes for steering at slower speeds. Lined up and away we go... 80kt climb out at 1000fpm! Soon clear of the circuit and sufficient height put it on a 60 deg bank, power back, stick back...speed... what speed?! just sat there! that is so stable! Flap back up, cruise S/L huge amounts of view out the front, out the side... even down - for a low wing, I was amazed.
Cranked it up a bit for a fast x wind joining of the cct, 140kts, with power to spare, S/L You had to be careful not to exceed Vne, I mean that's incredible!
To sum it up, I've flown a few types of aircraft now - not enough, but this one instantly hit the spot for me, handling characteristics were fabulous at both speed ranges.
Can turn on the spot, differential brakes with a free wheeling nose wheel. Wings can be removed for trailering/hangering. Great comfort, easy to get in and out for a low wing.
Just check out this page before I run out of breath, A kit with 3300 engine is only $58k I mean....
:thumb_up:Ok, I'll stop now and just show you some photos of the Blue Sierra 100 -

Thanks Sue, was just about to start up a thread!
Sorry to miss you, I was there most of the day Saturday - flew up in the J120. I had a brilliant time, with lots of great memories and experiences squeezed into one day!
Met up with most of you I think - Slarti, Yenn, Metalman, Gundy, Winsor, and quite a few others also on the forums, sorry I forget your usernames! But you know who you are
Went for a fly in Garry Morgans Blue Sierra with his son Tim, was fantastic - you'll hear more about it in the next little while no doubt!
============
Ok, so this is how it sorta went.... Woke up and drove into town (30min trip). Checked out the aircraft, packed up, and started up - fired up first pop! Current outside temperature was -1 degree.
Departed cct area in Dalby at precisely 7am tracking north. 1hr and 24minutes later was joining midfield x wind, 34 Monto. Had a 10kt tail wind all the way there. (nil wind on the ground at that stage, hence the reason 34 was in use).
Base, final... all going perfect, great air - smooth, aiming point 3 rd line in... full flap, solid 65kts and complete glide approach. About 100agl I threw it into a side slip with the sudden plan of landing on the piano keys - don't ask me why I suddenly thought it a good idea - but later it turned out to be! Flared... held off... off....off... oh that's right we aren't a tail drager! Anyway, did a reasonable touch down with the stall horn squawking, nose wheel probably 3ft off the deck!
Promptly lowered nosewheel to the deck, and applied brake - had about a second of it, then bang! The lever went all very loose, and the aircraft suddenly realized it was free... Quickly assessed remaining runway length and made a point where I would hit the power and take off. I zig zagged from one side to the other trying to slow down - which it did do to an extent, passed the point of take off.... ok so the slashed grass on the side was the last resort as friction, I would have switch off the engine if I used it just incase of a pot hole, didn't want a prop strike! For those that know 34 at Monto would realize it's all downhill too!Turned around at the end, going... well, wouldn't want to be any faster! and back tracked back up the hill to the parking spot.
After we parked I found the right hand brake line broken off at the wheel, Mmm... interesting I thought, so I pulled the wheel spat off, and the brake caliper fell to the ground!! The "T" plate that holds it to the leg had broken off. Which is extremely surprising considering the thickness of it. And another surprising thing is that it just sat there, and didn't jam and lock the wheel up, or put a hole in the spat!
The aircraft had had a pretty hard landing a week or so before on a training flight apparently, so it makes me wonder if the caliper actually hit the deck and consequently fractured it... dunno.
It was all good fun, amazing how you come up with ideas when you need to.
I can tell you the runout after landing a jabiru as slow as you can into a 10kt headwind still rolls a long way! I know cause I had to do it coming back home!
I should add also, thanks a lot to the Unicom guy for coming over and checking if all was ok after parking, and for helping make the backtrack and departure doable without rolling into the fence at the end (was downhill), and other aircraft. Extremely appreciated. Thanks guys.
Departed at 3.28pm - 28 minutes later than I planned
But it was a great flight back, even with a 15kt head wind for the first half, then it dropped back to only 10kts - we made the 136nm in 1hr and 33minutes.Eww... sorry that all got a bit long didn't it!

Yes indeed! I landed yesterday and as soon as I applied the brake... Bang! and it went loose, and so did the aircraft! They roll a lot without brakes! Especially on a slight downhill slope...G'Day All, I was thinking that flying a plane is like a mystery bag, you never know quite what you will get.Zig zagged all other the whole strip, only going to resort to the grass if really needed, but made the turn around at the end of the strip... wouldn't wanted to have been any faster - put it that way! Fortunately the strip was fairly wide, so it worked well.
Unfortunately, if you want service outa here, you just have to go telstra! :clown::clown:

He is young, he is single...........and the last time I was out near Dalby (well...Oakey way) there were plenty of nervous sheep in the paddocks :lol 8::lol 8::lol 8::lol 8:

There are nervous everythings lately.

========
Anyway, I got flying to do... seeya's at Monto!!!:thumb_up:
Ps. -1 degree's, and the weather gizmo says it feels like -5
-
3 degrees here tonight.... and decreasing... brr ;)Hope this helps- and stay warm 8 degrees tonight! -
Great to see, I reckon the VFG is the only book that is reasonably easy to understand!!
Hope they do consider printing it - I like a solid copy of things. If not I'll have to do it myself.

I'll let the pro's tell you about flying east of brisy - though I've gone up the Islands before, that's a nice trip, just stay under brisy and flying on the right hand side of the island, and up the coast I would have thought.
Anyway, I'm heading up from Dalby, just a short hop really, it's looking pretty promising at this stage - tail wind up (gives us head wind coming home though
).Look forward to seeing you all :thumb_up:
Ps. Slarti and Ian are on there way from Canberra today in the Cheetah.

....Gee that was quick!

Can't remember exactly, but I think it was just over an hr from Camden (can't remember what station I left from now, but I think it was Camden) to Circular Quay. Cheap as chips anyway, well was couple yrs ago!Is there a train to Sydney CBD from Camden and how long does it normally take?My Uncle lives at Camden, lovely spot.

Indeed, but I hope the oil injection is disconnected! ;) You'll end up with a double dose of oil otherwise.
-
...then she walked in.......
-
...and an orange under the other part of the suit...
-
Is this engine oil injected? By the photo it looks like it is...
If it is, just check the breather on the cap of the container - we've had one seize up, up this way from that, the cap was completely air tight, so nothing came out of it.
-
The beauty about that, is; you help all the others out in the long run...Then to make matters worse you make a post only to receive 100 replies saying where it originally was and you got the content wrong....but then again, it seems they'd already found it

That's the benefit of friends though hey...? four eyes are always better than two... or maybe two good eyes are better than ........ :raise_eyebrow:
I s'pose if you really want to get to the bottom of it, it mayen't be the eyes that are the problem -

-
Thanks John...
You know I read through all that before I posted this thread and couldn't see anything regarding fuel... I must be going blind!

Found it this time round though...

-
Indeed:thumb_up:Pure nostalgia in concentrated form .Nev. -
Anyone know what the go is with fuel at Monto?
Is it BYO or have they got it there?
I shouldn't need any, just curious in case I did.
