  1. You have to remember that not all readers of this site are pilots, and many of them are from overseas. I used to say look it up on airport-data.com which boasted that it had all the information you wanted, but unfortunately the only person who can update the airport database is the site owner, and he hasn't been heard from in three or four years. Details of many new or unlisted airports had been notified via the forum, but they have not been added to the database.

According to this site there are 613 airports in Australia with ICAO and/or IATA codes, and the site says it lists them all. Maybe Ian could add the link as a resource.

Edit: Unfortunately, the site above is not complete. In checking YMEK, I found that YMEL - Melton Victoria, is not listed. The other difficulty is that there is no search function. So you can look up by airport name, selecting the first letter from the list across the top, but searching by ACOA or IATA code is very difficult.

Maybe a better option is OurAirports.com. A quick check shows that it lists airfields like Melton, Drouin and St Leonards in Victoria, and it has a search function by name or code.

  2. Two men have died in a plane crash in Queensland's north-west.

Police believe the Cessna 210, which is registered to a NSW company, crashed about 26 kilometres north-east of Mount Isa Airport on Sunday afternoon.

About 4.30pm, a rescue helicopter crew told police the plane's wreckage had been found after a distress beacon was activated.

"It is believed two men were on-board at the time of the incident and pronounced deceased at the scene," police said.

The forensic crash unit is helping the Australian Transport Safety Bureau with its investigation.

In a statement on Sunday night, the ATSB said the light plane had been conducting a survey flight when it had an accident.

  4. Thanks Space. Still not sure if I've bitten off more than I can chew. On average, each profile takes between half and three quarters of an hour. Most of the info you will notice comes from Wikipedia, and sometimes from the manufacturers or agents website. Even then, some of the specs cannot be found. Copying and pasting the specs into the proforma Ian produced takes a while, switching between web pages. Then there's finding a photo. Most are my own photos, although I have used a few off the net. Often the specs available don't match the model or variant I have photos for, so they can be taken only as indicative. The photos have to be edited to suit the format, as much as possible. Some have to be enlarged slightly, others cropped or reduced to the 750x422 size (16:9 aspect ratio) I chose. A lot of work.

  5. Actually, while all funds have their head offices, with investment managers, marketing people, etc, most industry funds use a centralised processing contractor to handle processing of contributions, claims, pensions, and customer service. Some funds do their own, and there used to be three major processing contractors. These functions are common and there are economies of scale for not duplicating identical functions. I worked for one of these contractors servicing a number of funds. When a call came in, the name of the fund appeared on a small screen on the phone, One call might be "Welcome to ABC Fund", the next call "Welcome to XYZ Fund". Each fund had its rules, fees, conditions etc., and I developed a computer intranet reference system so that operators could instantly click into the details of the fund they were answering for. Our company took over the smaller of the three contractors while I was there, then the other one after I retired, so there is basically only one company processing nearly all of the funds transactions. At one stage, I was taking calls for nine separate funds.

  6. Retail super funds are run for the profit if the shareholders. Industry super funds are run for the members, with profits reinvested for the benefit of the members. All funds are required by law to provide a Product Disclosure Statement, which you can download as a pdf file from their website. You should also be able to download a Member Guide explaining the options available. I worked in the Customer Service Call Centre of an industry super fund for eight years. I am not a financial adviser, and cannot give any financial advice.

  7. I have a couple of photos of an Alca 2 taken at Avalon Air Show. However, when I tried to prepare a profile for the Showcase and wanted some data on it, Google failed to return anything except one of my photos that I posted on a photo forum. If this is your aircraft, or you know the owner, and you, or they, would like a profile on Showcase, please PM me so I can get details. See photo below.

  8. A few years ago I saw an advert on eBay from a guy who was house clearing to make room for an addition to the family. He had a large collection of colour transparencies (slides), more than 500 in all, that he had taken at various airports and air bases around the world. He offered them free of charge to anyone who wanted to pick them up, or he would throw them out in the garbage. I took up his offer and collected them, and with his permission, scanned them and uploaded them to airport-data.com. which unfortunately is off line at present.

Now I have to clear space, and as I have digital copies, am ready to repeat his offer. If you want them, you can have them for free. The catch is you have to pick them up from Vermont. I have uploaded a few to Dropbox, which you can view here. If you are interested, PM me to make arrangements.

  9. I put up a Savannah profile, using a photo from the Savannah website. Others are welcome. I can add them to the gallery, or you can include them in a reply comment.
