  1. Isn't it great .............. when you get a courtesy call from your bank as I did today ..................... but whenthe phone rang there was nobody on the line for 5 - 10 seconds, then overly loud music started to play, then some bunny at a call centre came on the line with their Courtesy Call speil.

Whenasked them about the silence on the line & then the overly loud music they said that this was the way their computer handles their outgoing calls to their customers.

There'll be some clown sitting at his desk somewhere in the NAB congratulating himself on what a great Courtesy Call system they have and there'll be some idiot boss or Board Member at the NAB thinking that they run a good customer relations operation.

There is going to be a big adverse reaction by Skippys to this impersonal bullsh*t and Indian call-centre calls if someone can work out how to do it economically the friendly & personal way.

I feel better now, again. Isn't it great?

  2. Dear Micky G and Ultra L

    Thanks for those tips.

Withthese flap bracket attachments being structural elements and bearing in mind that the only previous glassingI have done, before this kit, was some surfboard repairs back in the Stompy Wompy days, Ithought it prudentto add each layer of glass as per the J instructions and brush in the resin so that I know every gram that goes in has no air bubbles etc etc.

And with these 3 layers of glass needing to be faired in to make a nice job of the underwing area, I know that I can buff it back a tad and make it look nice with the job I have done.

Clem B is heading to Hawaii for some sun & seduction and as he was getting ready towing his way NE he sent me a note today saying that one pic looks like I didn't remove the gel-coat. I assured him that wasn't the case. It just looks that way as one corner of one bit of glass wasn't resined in because it was where the aileron plate is to be attached after the final trim of the flap length.

For you other builders, these are good jobs as you can see yourself making progress and can see a route to the end of the work .... as opposed to hitting the wall and spinning wheels like I was when mucking about with the cowls.

The plan now is to remount the wings this weekend and locate the inner fairing for the flaps. With those fairings on the fuselage, we should be able to complete the fuse and get it final painted, hopefully next week if the big spraybooth in town is not fully booked.

Thanks again for your interest and tips fellas.

    Regards Geoff

  3. 1 Nice to see you back and posting on this topic again Clem.

You've been quiet lately. Have you been away again?

2 Geeeez those graphics on Roger's 230 look nice in the pic and even better in the flesh. Looks classy& flash without being over the top.

    Rgds Captain

  4. Thanks Ross.

My mains powered Dremel spins to a max over 30,000 rpm if needed and I've already had one of the cutting discs, as shown in the pic,fly to pieces. Not that much fun.

The few jobs where I have found it most useful would not be handled by the battery powered unit. A couple of cutting jobs, like that shown on the wings were the slot is needed for the ailerons really make it work hard and it gets super hot. But you can be very accurate when using it. I see that they have a new version in the stores now with a digital controller. They look nice.

Can you post a couple of pics of under Roger's dash (if his syndicate don't mind) as I forgot to have a squizz there at W-O-W.

I looked at all of the J200/230/400's at W-O-W and bonding those fairings to the fuselage makes them look more part of the plane. I suspect that if they aren't bonded on, a dab of resin on the screws is needed to encourage them to stay put ... and evenwhen you/I bond the main lower strut fairing, the rear top strut fairingand also the top fairing at rear of the wings, the smaller removeable sections that attach to them will be getting a dab of resin on them on mine, once the inspector has finished inspecting.

How did you find the P92 compared to the J160 & J230? Are you selling your kit and ordering one?

    Best regards

  5. Thanks to Vigi & Slarti for your advice.

Given your experience and conviction I acted upon them both.WRONG. It appears that she didn't mean either of Items 1 or 2 ..... so I've been out in the shed again and below is the latest.

Is this the Kitbuilder's best friend? And no, I don't mean his hand ... although some would say that you have to be one to take on a kitbuilding project. No comment from me on those that think that.

Soaring conditions have been great around here this week .... and one of the blokes in Corowa did 750 kms cross-country yesterday. I've gotta get this project finished, quick sticks and get at it again. This photo was at 11 am. You should have seen it at 2.30 pm with the bases of the Cu's at about 9000.

  6. Ross

You asked for pics of behind the panel.

I assure you that they will look a lot better soon, as there is a place for everything and everything has a place ... I hope.

As you can see, it is still in the kitchen area and I wonder if any of you blokes can translate for me. When a wife says "Get this crap out of my kitchen or else!" is she really saying:

    1 "I want you darling"

2 "You may spend whatever you like to get this project completed quickly, sweetheart"

3 "Get this crap out of my kitchen or else!"

Please help as I need to either formulate a response or buy more bits.

    Geoff

  7. Ross

I'll go and take a couple of shots now behind the panel and put them in the other section ..... but I warn you ... it ain't pretty (yet).

I have in mind to put some of that spiral wrap stuff on the engine mount below each cable tie .... but has anyone got better ideas or more experience?

    Geoff Captain

  8. Ross,

There is a Wagga All Ford weekend in town here at the moment.

Maybe someone has a sense of humour and is sending the blimp down here to stick it up 'em from above.

Or there is the rag & tube fly in at Holbrook. Would that thing qualify for that?

  9. There was an Ice Age 10,000 (???) years ago & the natural cycle is that the earth is moving away from that to a Warmer Age. That has happened before and the eath's climate has NEVER been fixed and stable over thousands of years.

While human beans may have contributed somewhat I believe that it has yet to be conclusively proven that the warming cycle has been massively accelerated.

There have been substantial temperature swings this spring, however I built a mine on the west coast of Tassy some years ago when it snowed late Nov/early Dec and nobody slit their wrists at that time over global anything. We just went to the pub.

Everyone is getting excited about Al Gore's lectures/movie, but you must remember that he is just getting all his ducks in a row to prove that he is "caring & sharing" and environmentally credentialled when he runs for the Presidential nomination.

While we in Wagga are really feeling the drought, I have mates on properties in FNQ who have never had it so good.

I refuse to accept that someone flipped a switch 4 years ago and it is never going to rain again .... and I have a bet going down here that within 5 years we'll all be down on the levy bank filling sandbags.

Nowater storageshave been built in Sydney since the city was a fraction of its present size. Is it any wonder that more people use more of the stuff. Similarly Gov't have done bugger all in most places to add water infrastucture as populations grow.

I feel better now ........... Isn't it Great?? Captain

  10. Had a good day today ... well I feel that way, anyway.

Hit the job at sparrow-phart and finally have the cowl & its gaps just about where I want it, + havebogged in the lower strut fairings, then got all of the stickers on the panel.

That was 10 solid hours, bearing in mind that I am slow and finicky ... but have a look at the amount of dust on the floor from today's effort. It's not much fun having that stuff cascading down all over you while you are overhand sanding. I wonder if I'll miss that when this is all over?

Now I'm off to Wakefield Park for the post-classic bike racing this weekend.

    Regards

    Captain

  11. Mine is on and with the new exhaust on the 3300 engine it sits close to the pipes.

Here is a pic from below. I am aware that they push in a fair way when opened and thatshould give room to fit the drain tube.

    How does yours look Ross?

I am in the middle of corresponding direct with Saf-Air as I thought they might make an elbow to go into the sump plug and then attached the drain pointing down. They don't. They offered the option to cut off the hose tail and attach a larger tube over the knurled section. I have sent them the pic and am awaiting more developments.

Edit ... just noticed Don's post on this very issue. Where did you get the elbow from Don? I understand that the thread is 1/2" 20.

Also noticed your comment about temp Clem. I think Saf-Air spec a max temp which I assume is for the welbeing of the O-rings inside the unit. That's my worry leaving it as it is.

  12. Jan

There used to be a couple of photos on the Jabiru website that showed an aircraft on a trailer with the wings in cradles... I think it was in the UK.

Ross is right with his advice and with the fuel in the wings it adds another set of problems ... not only with disconnection of fuel lines, which could probably be solved with quick connectors, but you can't lift the buggers if there is fuel in them and the vents would leak etc etc.

The fairing that Ross mentioned is shown in the pic below. I THINK it needs to be screwed on but am checking on that. Does anyone know?

Also below are doors finish primed ... there is more work in that than you think to get them spot on for shape.

Also have donea final attack on the bottom cowl to get the shape right down the bottom where it mounts onto the fuselage.

And below that is a shot of the lower strut fairings all attached and ready to be faired in tomorrow with a bit of luck.

    Regards

  13. No probs with that question Jan if you haven't built or studied a Jabiru.

What is shown in the pics is just the 1st trial fit of the wings. Each wing has 2 bolts attaching to brackets that are molded into the fuselage and then there is a bolt at each end of the struts.

I just have the bolts thrueach hole at this stage and it's a 30 second job to take the wings on and off as I progress the build.

I attached the lower strutmain fairing to the fuselage last night .... havingneglected to do it before I undercoated it. We saw others at Wings Over Wagga, so did it over the past 2 days.

Will post a pic on that as soon as I can.

Regards & thanks for the question.

    Geoff

  14. Dave

I think it's fair to say that numbers were down a bit.

But it was blowing spitballs here and everywhere else in Area 22 on Fri & Sat, so I'm sure that some who had planned to fly in might have called it off and done the mowing.

It was blowing so hard, that I found my dog in Adelong .... and it was initiallychained up on Kapooka Hill. The dog tells me it never went below 500 ft all the way.

I thought the commercial displays were improved this year.

The parking was split between the area to the west of the GA area and the area near the new long hangar, so it looked less aircraft but if you wlked over to the 2nd area there were quite a few aircraft parked there that were not visible from the WOW area.

As usual the weather here, after most had departed, was terrific on Sunday, with barely 5 knts of breeze and much warmer.

Did you fly up or drive up Clem?Oh ... I see your pic so I assume thatyou flew. What was it like?

I might add that one of th scale Spitfires did a couple of terrific displays. No wonder they have a 14 month waiting list on the kits. Also the yellow Rotorway Chopper did a great display. I'd love to see more of that type of thing at these events.

    Regards Geoff Captain

  15. No Peter it's OK. The shed is expendable.

You are right Clem. There were 200/400's of all persuasions with 3 blade carbon fibre props, central locking everything with disco lights a-flashing, 4 speaker toof-toof stereo systems in the back etc etc.

It was certainly worth the look.

You are also right about the wining & dining too Clem. Someone said that if you do that, you will be given an RV6 to play with, so I thought it worth the effort.

    Regards to you both Captain

  16. G'day All,

Went out to Wings Over Wagga last Fri & Sat. It was blowing a gale both days and I suspect that many cancelled their trips, but there were a few J230 aircraft and owners out there to look at, learn from, drool over and bullsh*t with.

I had a great time until Roger's J230 turned up flown by one of his syndicate members. How depressing was that. They won the race and were as happy as Sand Boys ... with huge smiles. Congratulations fellas. I'll be over for a coffee & a chat once mine is up and running.

Also met up with another of our more illustrious Forum Members in his J400, and who was bounced from pillar to post coming up and back from southern Mexico on Saturday.

Well .... after all that I'm inspired again and have a second wind .... or is it perhaps just normal wind?

Have done a 1st trial wing fit and all looks good. Geez the 230 wing makes them wide buggers, as you can see from the following pics.

I just about have the cowl beaten, with just a fiddle or two to go before final attachment of screws and camlocks.

Also on here is a pic of the ceramic coated muffler and tail pipe by Jet-Hot Coatings. They did a nice job& I meant to post this a week or two ago.

Now onward and upward to finish the cowl, bond on the strut/undercarriage fairings, and complete the wings.

    Cheers Geoff

    Captain
