    As I've mentioned before, I did my first apprenticeship in a Yamaha motorcycle and Stihl Chainsaw shop (Rod Linden Yamaha, Frankston, Vic). I have torn apart hundreds of nikasil bore engines. When they are left for years they build up a ring of gunk around the union of the metal rings, piston crown and bore, probably galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals, but I ain't a metallurgist. When, and if you can free the piston, by the forth mentioned rocking back and forth, it varies what is left, sometimes nothing noticable other than a discolouration, sometimes pitting and sometimes throwaway if a partial ring of the electroplated lining has been eaten away. Where the problem is in the cylinder of course has a large bearing on the decision making. Cylinders we felt usable, we ran a rigid diamond stoned hone very lightly to deglaze which could also showed up flaking and other oddities. The same applies to roller cranks, re; corrosion and pitting on the crank pins, rollers and conrod. That of course is a bit more serious. We pressed our own single cylinder cranks, but always sent out multi cylinders cranks.

    Pull pugs and first turn motor over gently with small movements back and forth to feel for and remove and corrosion spots on the bore and crank. The difficulty of moving past those points from it's original crank position as found, if any, is a good indication of what you're up against. If feels ok, drain the oil and fill with diesel and turn it over for a bit on the starter, drain to flush old crap out. Further to other rubber deterioration, you may need to do valve stem seals, personally I would whip the heads off, de coke everything and do them along with a valve lap. Gives you a chance to inspect the bores and feel for crank problems through the piston.

    I don't know why anyone would use a Model A engine at all, I could never get that wrapped up in history, maybe consider something like a VW 1.9 diesel to give a similar character, sound, smoke, etc (and weight!) but with modern reliability if that's your thing.

    You could have a "clunky" lightweight Donovan Model D engine up front. Loosely based on a Model A engine but 100hp at 2800 rpm!     My remarks are based on, and specific to, years of comradeship with other members of this forum. I feel I have a feel for what are the limits and sure, I may read the scenario wrong and occasionally step over those limits in which case other regular Members or a Moderator will berate me and for which I will pull my head in. Otherwise I'm not having someone who's been a member for years and can't manage to have a single post here ever, telling me how to behave here. There ain't $30K worth of damage to that plane, not even close, and if he was uninsured, well that's a choice out of anyone here's hands. But yes, to answer your question, there is a lot of generous people in this world, you would be surprised at how many of the members here would come to his aid with money, materials and time if he asked, including this "Dickhead".

    Everytime I come to Oz I still can not believe that is still not policed. Take off and landings are not worse than your own washing machine running it's cycle. Was the track ever there before the housing, or a new one? I raced MX and many tracks (and race car tracks, and speedway, and airports, and Western Star Trucks, etc) that have been there for 50+ years and then housing gets built towards them, and then the new house owners complain, is contentious.

    I thought my little crack was harmless enough, that being of the irony of surviving a plane crash in or near a Zoo and then getting your dues from a lion, but if it's affecting people then I unequivocally apologise for any insensitivity deemed. It was not the intent.

    Actually it was a proposition, notice the question mark, along with some hard earned examples to possibly explain some people's background's as to why they can find a position of humor in situations with good outcomes (relative).

    Or it could be that some of us have led more adventurous lives? I have crashed race cars, rally cars, skateboards, bicycles, dirtbikes, skiing, fallen out of trees, boxed, and shared all these experiences with other Australians who have been through similar, whom I have rarely found to not have a laugh about the experiences.

    I grew up with, and am still surrounded by Australians who generally have a chuckle after walking away from serious incidents with just minor scratches. Machines are replaceable. Your mileage may have differed.

    I was driving a right hand drive car on the left side of the road yesterday morning and a left hand drive car on the right side of the road this afternoon. I was spannering years back in a Brit bike shop riding left hand shift and right hand shift bikes including reverse patterns (Norton) and even foot clutch, hand gear change Harleys on a daily basis. After a few hours on each, you just change over between them without even thinking about it for years to come.

    I guess most of you realise the recent low input is due to the passing of my Mum earlier in the month. I have been in Oz most of the time with Dad and other family in SA and Vic mostly as well as driving considerable kms between the 2. I have just today arrived back in China. As I intend to return again soon, possibly for Xmas with Dad, and that there is another interest that may keep me in Oz for a few months early 2018, I MIGHT be interested in getting someone over here to work in my place. It's just a thought at the moment and might interest someone who wants aprox a 6 month working holiday who is capable of doing the assembly work similar to what you can see in this thread, while keeping some wits and some decent work standards about them while they do it. The design and prep of materials (purchase, laser, folding, etc.) is organised otherwise. If this might interest you, PM me, but consider it's not set in stone at the moment. Age isn't an issue, indeed probably suits a more mature person. Accommodation, airfares, guide, local basic wage (bowl of rice inclusive) and a kit plane at the end is a possible package.The experience of living here for a bit can be priceless to some, while others want to leave after a couple of months, sometimes weeks. This isn't Australia, if you expect it to be, don't bother.
