  1. I'm only in my early 60's but I sure as hell remember being hungry as a kid, dressed in Salvation Army clothes and being called a pauper by other kids. I guess that's why I studied hard, and took any job I could at any wage. Here I am now with my own plane and hangar, no debts and could quit work tomorrow and still not struggle. (Oh, and to be fair, staying single helps).
  2. Yes. That's what we get for allowing bullies to drive wages out of all proportion. But, I won't enter into any debate because too many people can't control themselves.
  3. Yes, English is a weird language. A lot of what I was taught in the 60's isn't taught because of the dumbing down of education over the last thirty years. However, Professor Julius Sumner Miller thought education was being dumbed down over 60 years ago!
  4. I before e except after c.
  5. I thought it was 1980. I was certainly taught in high school using the olden ways back in 72.
  6. I'm still waiting for engines that are not based on 70 year old technology. Where's the 'boom-shaker mark one' warp drive I expected by year 2000?
  7. Yep. I need a Canvas account. How do I create that without the join code?
  8. I want to do the L1 maintenance course but I cannot create the student account required. It wants a 'join code' but does not tell me where I get this and it rejects my RAAus membership number. Anybody got any suggestions?
  9. I used to fly in those sort of conditions in the Tobago but I would not do it in my Jab. Caught once on a hot and windy day and noticed a few times my wing tips just inches off the runway upon landing. It's not fun, not clever and not safe to deliberately fly in turbulence that has your plane rolling and pitching 45° and spilling your beer throughout the cockpit. But, having said that, your ride with the instructor appears to have taught you a good deal and not scare the crap out of you. I would really have liked to see the approach and landing!
  10. website?
  11. hands up everyone who knew that...
  12. Who told you that? When I did the 'upgrade' that is, installed that large ugly fin at the back, I did a new calculation on the CoG. I would say everybody did this.
  13. Could have been trying to get the guy out?
  14. My bad!!! (as they say these days). My card and paperwork arrived today in the mail. The other 'paperwork' is the email I received and printed out. I hate getting old....
  15. Well ,here we are in 2016 and I got my rego certificate but no card. Have I missed a memo or something? I'll ring them later today (Tues 6th Sept 2016) to find out what's happening.
  16. I end up with a sore neck watching the same thing that one sees at all airshows. Na, I don't particularly go out of my way to attend. Did Oshkosh in 1990 and a few at Mangalore in the eighties. Maybe a few hundred naked (female) skydivers might get me back for a look.
  17. What version of Autocad did you use here? :-)
  18. Apart from accidents the VAST majority of back problems is caused by carrying a fat gut. Try telling folks that!
  19. Let's say you had a steady output from a sensor of around 1 volt RMS when attached to your smooth running engine. Then something goes wrong and the vibration increases. If that causes a sudden change in output level, could that not be a trigger to warn you? I think it's worth some investigation.
  20. perhaps this might be of use..... Vibration Meter - Android Apps on Google Play It's an Android app used to turn the phone into a vibration meter.
  21. Have you wound the radio squelch so far back it picks up all noise? That's a common mistake. You adjust squelch with the motor running so only your voice gets through. Start with the simple sh*t first. Is a hand-held radio close by picking up the noise? Disconnect the antenna - if the noise goes then the interference is coming via the power cable. Hard to help when I'm not there...
  22. There are a few here that fly out of Gawler. Welcome to the gang...
  23. Don't hang your bum out the door no matter how desperate. I did once and heard a guy in a passing plane call over the radio "Hey you with the fat cheeks and cigar, get your head back in the cabin!".
  24. You can't take your money with you so, if you're not struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table then spend the money on flying. Once you ditch the instructor the costs should be a lot less. I spend $50 or so week just owning a Jab, that does not include flying it. Great video, you're doing well.
  25. Controllers can get a bollocking if they do not take into account pilots that are 'struggling'. My brother was an ATC officer for many years and it's part of their training (human factors). ATC that make soothing noises can save lives while those who are impatient and aggressive can get people killed. The ATC seemed to be doing the right thing in this sad case....
