  1. Go to Bunnings and buy whatever you need for jobs around the home. If stopped, simply explain that you need to purchase stuff to reduce your stress levels by doing something (psychological reason), or that you are getting the stuff to prevent your other half getting arrested for domestic violence if you keep sitting around the house doing nothing.

     

    I want to go for a ride on my bike, so I checked how far I could go. I can make it to Camden and The Oaks airports and still not stray more than 20 kms from home (as the crow flies).

     

    Does maintenance of personal property count as a reason to travel? If so, can you travel to the airport to service your plane?

  2. We all know that one of the pre-flight checks we always do is the magneto operation check. "Both - check revs; Left - check revs; Both; Right - check revs." We know that if the difference between the revs at "Both" and those at "Left" or "Right" is about 50 RPM, then the magnetos are working. But why do the revs drop when we go to only one magneto?

     

    It's all to do with the combustion of the fuel/air mixture. For too long, people have been taught that the events in the Otto 4-stroke cycle are: Suck; Squeeze; Bang; Blow. But that is wrong. When the fuel/air mixture goes

    we have detonation, and that is bad for the engine. It's about time people were taught: Suck; Squeeze; BURN; Blow.

     

    We have all seen movies where a flame front travels down a stream of petrol, or along a gun powder trail. More recently we have seen fire fronts moving into unburnt bush. That is exactly how the fuel/air mixture burns in a combustion chamber.

     

    The flame is initiated at the spark plug electrode and moves across the combustion chamber, igniting the fresh fuel/air mixture as it reaches it. Here are pictures of the combustion of fuel/air in a combustion chamber. The engine happens to be a side valve engine with the valves located to the right of the right of the picture and the piston to the left.

    The speed of the flame from can be calculated by the engine design boffins, with the speed of the flame front being one of the variables in the calculation.

     

    So, aero-engines have two spark plugs per cylinder for:

    1. Even combustion. With spark plugs on opposite sides of the combustion chamber, two flame fronts are generated and there is a quicker and more complete burn of the fuel/air mixture.
    2. More power. The combustion of the fuel/air mixture produces pressure which acts on the crown of the piston. Pressure is a force. The application of this force to the piston changes the Momentum of the piston The speed with which the momentum of an object changes is called Impluse. The speed at which the fuel/air mixture burning increases the pressure in the combustion chamber affects the speed at which the force from the pressure increases the momentum of the piston, which then becomes the torque force applied to the crankshaft, which ultimately is the source of the engine's horse-power. Therefore two spark plugs mean faster burn, hence more power.
    3. Reliability. A bonus arising from having two spark plugs per cylinder is redundancy. If one magneto, or HT lead, or spark plug fails, there is still one to carry on. However, if you lose the benefits described above, you lose power. If you are flying with a 4-cylinder engine, you could lose up to 25% of the rated power of the engine if one spark generating system fails.

    So why do you get at rev drop when you go from "Both" to one?

    1. Slower burn of the fuel/air mixture
    2. A lower rate of change of momentum of the piston, resulting in the generation of less torque at the crankshaft. Less torque = less horse power.
    3. Less horse power means a slower turning crankshaft, indicated by lower revs.

    The stall speed of a wing is related to the speed of the wing relative to the air surrounding it. This is an Earthly example of relativity, the theory proposed in 1915 by Albert Einstein. The central point of the theory is the principle of general relativity, which states that all observers, regardless of their state of motion, will see the same laws of physics operating in the universe.

     

    Let's use the "walking through a train carriage" example.

    A train is travelling along at 50 kph, and a passenger can walk at 5 kph. If the passenger in a carriage walks towards the direction of travel of the train. then

    1. Relative to the train carriage, the passenger is walking at 5 kpH.
    2. Relative to an observer standing on a station platform, the passenger is walking at (50 + 5) kph.
    3. If an observer is travelling on a road alongside the train at 50 kpH in the same direction as the train, then the passenger is moving at 5 kph.

    So, consider the passenger to be the wing, and the carriage the air mass it is located in. In order to produce Lift, the wing must move relative to the air mass at a speed greater than stall speed. That is the relativity situation the pilot observes, and why the pilot does not feel acceleration forces as the movement of the air mass, relative to an observer on the ground, results in a speed, relative to the observer on the ground, increasing from the 10 kts into wind to 70 kts with the wind (tailwind).

     

    It should be remembers that ground speed is another case of relativity. In that case, the pilot makes observations of the relationship between the aircraft and the Earth's surface below. Don't forget that, relative to the Sun, both Earth and plane are moving at 30-odd kilometres per second. You never include that figure in your flight planning, do you?

  4. What you are doing is asking the insurer to reassess the risk of events occurring. When my motor bike was off the road for an extended period undergoing an engine overhaul, my insurer was quite happy to reconsider the risk (mainly from using the bike on roads infested with maniacs) and restructure the contract and reduce the premium.

     

    Don't forget that, although the insurance companies hold the upper hand in these contracts, the events covered are always open to re-evaluation, which might reduce premiums.

  5. I mentioned that Danny's post kicked me into action to get on with making a saddle seat office chair. I've been doing a bit each day for the past few days, and here is where I am up to.

     

    Here's a picture of the spine of the mount, looking from front to rear. The spine is a length of banister rail with transverse blocks into which the formers will go.

    Here's a picture of the spine and formers in place. When sat upon, the saddle will force itself down onto the spine and the formers will act like a horse's ribs. The threaded rod, penny washers and nuts are to keep the formers in their relative positions, and to remove some flex if present.

    At the moment, the formers are clamped down while the glue sets. After that, the bottoms of the formers will be attached to a rectangular piece of ply that will secure them. The base plate will then be attached to the metal seat base which has the gas strut in it. A bit of paint and people will think it's a bought one.

  6. Just an update on the progress of my saddle seat. I've cut all the formers and set out their positions on the spine. I'm just waiting for the glue to set on the support brackets so that I can glue the formers to the spine. After that I've just got to fit a base and then attach it to the gas strut. Apart from cutting the tip of my finger with the band saw, everything is going along swimmingly.

    For cars, that's pretty typical when you consider how much fuel is used in urban with frequent starting off from traffic lights. If I use the freeway from Campbelltown to Milperra on the way to Bankstown Airport, a distance of 22 kms, the distance to empty shown can increase by up to 10 kms. That's driving at at a steady 2500 RPM, or about 110 kph. The further you go at a constant RPM, the greater the range of the car.

  9. We are allowed to be with the people who normally share the same domestic residence, ie spouse and kids. That makes sense. Does the ban on travelling include making a picnic lunch and putting the family in the car to go for a drive, as long as no one gets out of the car to mingle with strangers? Does in include going for a scenic flight with one of the family on board? What about if I jump on my motorcycle, which only has one seat, and I go for a ride in the local countryside?

    Talking to others is a great was to get a shot of enthusiasm. After posting here this morning, I went into the yard, picked up the doggy-do, ripped some palm frond ends of a useless palm tree, then got stuck into making templates for the saddle seat. Progress was good, so I'm out of here now to get back into it. I see my get-up-and-go coming home.

    At the moment in my workshop I have:

    1. A cuckoo clock pulled down for cleaning and rejuvenation
    2. A riding saddle waiting to be mounted on a frame and set on an office chair base
    3. Three scale model motorcycle kits to be assembled for a diorama
    4. A trailer axle and hubs waiting for the purchase of the rest of the materials to make a trailer to haul my motorcycle
    5. A handmade spoke shave that needs the blade hardened and sharpened
    6. Several Matchbox toys awaiting restoration
    7. A filthy car and motorcycle that haven't been washed in months.
    8. A lawn mower that needs a massive servicing

    I also have an airbrush kit that I want to learn how to use so I can complete No. 6 above, and a welding kit that I need to learn how to use so I can do No. 4 above.

     

    Inside I have three books to write; a family genealogy to expand; some reports to complete, and a wife to care for.

     

    We have had a Summer with no sunny days due to smoke then rain. My get-up-and-go is sending me post cards from far away.

     

    Just remember - the longest journey starts with the first step.

  12. Building it on your own? No one to come around to give you a hand? No one to come around ostensibly to look or help, but ends up drinking your grog and talking bull? The other half resenting the time you are away? These affect every bloke who sets out to make something that has no use to anyone else or does not generate cash.

     

    It's just that you are in a blue funk. Go find someone who has, or is, building one too. Just looking at someone else's handiwork can be a stimulus. And you can be the guy who drinks the grog and talks bull.
