  1. Hi PudGot the springs sorted thanks. Got Greg to make a set as per the diagram in Tony's T500 manual but also got him to reset the set that were on the aircraft. The set that were on it turn out to be a fair bit shorter and are 4 leaf as apposed to the standard 3.

I put the 4 leaf back on and all is going well. I've forgotten exactly how much it cost, but it was very reasonable, about $250 for both spring sets. I'll try to get some pics when the rain lets up.

    Cheers....Phil

Glad to hear your springs are sorted striker.

I'm interested in seeing the correct 'look' for the undercarriage. There are 3 Thrusters in the hangar where I am and all sit differently according to the spring shape. Some of this is due to number (and hardness) of landings I know, but it would be good to see what it should look like.

My T500 manual has no spring diagram at all so I'd be interested in getting a copy of the diagram. Do the shorter springs mean the aircraft sits lower and/or narrower than the longer springs? I'd imagine the 4 leaf springs would be rather rigid compared to the 3 leaf version; what's the ride like?

    Cheers,

  2. Hi Baron.Got Greg at Tamworth to make me some springs. Thanks for Tony's number, I'll try him for some other parts I need.

    Cheers Phil

    G'day striker,

How did your new springs work out? Got any pics of the springs in situ?

What about cost Phil; would you care to share with us how much?

    Cheers, Pud

  3. Pud,A thought having viewed the photos of your artistic endevours:

I was involved in getting an a/c through UK "Section S" approval and one thing mentioned is paints and coatings.

Whatever you use, paint or powder coating etc. it must be brittle and not flexible or cracks in the base material could be masked until it is too late.

    Nick

    G'day Nick,

My apologies for not replying sooner; I did read your post and thought I'd come back to it, and never did until now.

The paint I've used is just enamel gloss over an etch primer - both from a pressure pack spray can. I didn't think about flexibility of the paint. I reckon though, that the enamel paint, whilst having some flexibility, would not be as flexible as an acrylic paint. Luckily the connection points are very easy to get to for daily inspections so that's a plus.

What is your view on the paint I have used?

  4. Having a 582, I did a lot of reading (I won't be pretentious and call it research!) on 2 stroke oils. Castrol Activ 2T seemed to be a very popular choice since the demise of Penrite T40 C. I have used it for 30 odd hours but have no objective measure of its quality. I don't normally "put my faith in the market", but I believe that Castrol would have a lot to lose by selling a poor product. By the way, compared with motor bikes I don't think that the 582 is a high performance engine. Just my thoughts. Don

    G'day Farri,

I thought a thorough discussion on 2 stroke oil in http://www.recreationalflying.com/forum/avionics-engines-props-recreational/5970-2-stroke-oil-rotax-what-one.html was pretty exhaustive. I'm settling for Castrol Active 2T in my 582

    Cheers,

  5. Well at the risk of being flamed, dismissed, ignored and thought of as a damned fool I'll have a go here.024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

I believe I am one of the apathetic majority, who, for better or worse, is a member of RaAus for only one reason - because that is the only way to fly 3 axis control ultralights legally. I don't give a stuff about AGMs, GMs, Boards, budgets and power plays within the organisation - just leave me alone to fly at the "grass roots" end of our aviation spectrum. Hell, I don't even know who my board member is and don't care either.

Now don't get me wrong. I have the utmost respect for people who want to get involved and hold the 'powers that be' to account, just don't count on my support.

Now I can't speak (heaven forbid!!) for the silent majority, but it is my belief the vast majority of members would share my (or a similar) apathetic view.

OK, I'm waiting for the beating:black_eye::black_eye::black_eye::black_eye::black_eye::black_eye:

  6. Now that Tony is no longer with us we are hearing of people who 3 point the Thruster. That was practically forbidden in his day, but I found it a much safer way to go. I did try wheeling one on once, but only once.To get a good idea of how you are landing, try a beach landing. It may surprise you. With the Corby, I seem to be putting the tail wheel down as much as 5M before the mains, which means it is actually about 3M ahead of them after allowing for the distance between. A Savvy or a Jab should have the mains down a long way before the nosewheel.

Why did you only try a wheel on landing once Yenn? What was so bad that you didn't give it another go? I assume this was in a Thruster.

The Corby must have a pretty strong tail wheel assembly to be getting that down first. I reckon the Thruster tail wheel assembly requires the same treatment as the nose wheel in a Jab, Savvy or the Gazelle which I have some time in - that is keep it of the runway as long as possible.

  7. You sound like me Pud, I still haven't got the Javelin in the air yet, too much travel for work and not enough play time .... bugger!David

I wondered how you were going with the Javelin David,

In my case, most of my weekends are taken up with home projects like, paving, painting and renovations. Not to worry though as I have put aside 3 weekends in December to get the Thruster finished.

  8. OLC scoring page[/url]. One of the guys posted some photos (elsewhere) showing 14,500' from Friday !

    Thanks flyinghigh,

it's amazing the altitude these guys reach - hope they've all got enough oxygen on board. I've been told that some glider pilots use oxygen all the time, even when down at altitudes us ultralight pilots are more comfortable with.

  9. G'day Thruster drivers, just saying that this morning the lovely lady and I dragged the old bird out, checked it over carefully, and launched into the most beautiful day. Life does not come any better than this. We shared thermals with a Wedgie and just thralled in the beauty around us. This was followed by a perfect 3 pointer! Just 45 minutes but makes all the sh***y bits seem insignificant. Yours fraternally, Don

    Great stuff Don,

I'm very envious as I have not flown since 26th June and I'm getting very toe-ee!!

I've gotta get in the air soon.

  10. According to a news report, a certain private school in Sydney 's Eastern Suburbs was recently faced with an unusual problem. A number of the girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints .

Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the Headmistress decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man.

She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses) .

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet bowl, and cleaned the mirror with it. The silence was broken by a large number of gasps, a few girls vomited and apparently someone fainted. Since then there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

  11. Yes I had a similiar experience with my 582 however I used only reg unleaded, not premium but occasionally a 50/50 avgas-reg ul mix which it also liked. Had 650 hours when I sold it, still running beautifully. New owner has since replaced the ign stator (wouldn't run on one ign) , and the coolant radiators are starting to leak slightly. Still running the original water pump seals !. Destined to be one of the classic engines I reckon. 024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

    So Maj and ozzietriker,

I'll be using Castrol Active 2T in my 582 powered Thruster, but I have a mate - Poll on the forums here, who will be flying behind a 503 Rotax in a Thruster Gemini, therefore aircooled, as opposed to the 582 watercooled. Would you still use Castrol Active 2T or suggest something else?

  12. well spotted pud...looking down rwy 27 gives it away!!

Nah cfi, I didn't spot anything (although I did see the '27';))

I know Wyalkatchem very well but have not been on the airfield in an aircraft - met the RFDS there a few times when I was a volunteer ambulance officer.

My home town is Koorda some 45kms to the North and I spent a lot of time around Wylie playing sport and chasing girls.;)

  13. OK it's confirmed - I'm thick!! Not in a million years of pondering would I have worked it out. Now that you've removed the blinkers, it sticks out like a diamond in a goat's rectum. Duh

I pondered posting a reply like yours Riley but decided I didn't want everyone to know how thick I was - just knew someone else would ask the question;)

The thing was, just as I clicked off the post I realised what it was so went back for another look.

  14. Well Methusala, I haven't found a deal like yours yet but my son showed up with 4l of Castrol Active 2T on Saturday for the big ,fat price of $0. He works as a spare parts manager at a car dealership where they use a lot of Castrol products. From time to time their supplier sends out a freeby - this time it was Castrol Active 2T and I was the recipient:)

  15. It also depends on the pilots experience on the Thruster...... Until you have some more experience I would suggest wheel landings.Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

    Steve.

    G'day Steve,

As you well know, I am a new Thruster driver having only a few hours since my conversion training th the T500. As such I'm going to stick with the method I was taught until I have a lot more hours up... Then I might come see you for some instruction in 3 pointers as good practise if I'm ever involved in an engine failure and the terrain is not too favourable.

    Cheers,
