Well it's not brushable but I have used this product.Hi folks... wondering if anyone has found or knows of a brushable paint that will survive the heat on the exhaust system?http://www.speco.com.au/Downloads/VHTCatalogue2009.pdf

Heroic squadron loses last pilot: Vaile Ivan Peirce.
The clandestine missions for a small group of air crews based in Perth in World War II were to cross perilous skies above the Indian Ocean unarmed with top secret microfiche films and people vital to halting the Japanese war machine.

I knew the Catalinas flew from the Swan River here in Perth, but I didn't know about the "Double Sunrise" operation.

Depends on how much you can blow Frank. Some people say I'd be good for keeping a hot air balloon aloft:blush:Well I`ll be blowed...
.....I`ve always thought it was me that was making the aircraft fly.Frank.Pud

G'day Frank,
Yeh, I'm also wondering what strip you used to take off - unless you have floats of course:laugh:
I received a nice little Vertex VXA-300 for Christmas. It is going in my T500 when it's ready. At the moment I'm monitoring Jandakot airport traffic with my headset plugged in. I look a right burke sitting here at the computer with them on too:loopy:
I ordered the handheld through Clear Prop shop here and it arrived within 2 days, just in time for Christmas. How's that for service - well done Ian and Corrine for the great service. I would recommend everyone give the shop here a try, you won't be disappointed.
Just had a look on Elders Weather for Jandakot - sunny with a 5% chance of less than 1mm of rain for the next week. Forecast temp today 38 degrees, then around 34 all week.
Stay dry,

Thanks Maj, I appreciate your advice.Pud, From what I know about Thrusters, sitting on the ground the wheels should be straight up and down, if you know what I mean. If the tops of the tires are inward further than the bottoms I would guess that the landing gear legs have suffered a hard landing, and are bent outwards. They are only attached to the alum cross-member by two large bolts each side, so make sure the bolts are in good shape, and do not overtighten them . You only need one of them to let go, to make life real interesting on landing !.The 1" square chromemoly member inside the alum channel often rusts out, but is very important as this together with the alum channel carry all your wing strut loads.
Shouldn't be hard to get the landing gear legs reshaped as they are spring steel. You just need to find someone who knows what they are doing with spring steel. I would also check the alum cross-member for cracks if you haven't already done so, as a hard landing can also cause cracking in this piece..the 582 is a great engine, just do your run-in per the book while watching the temps, and it'll give you good service...........................Cheers ...Maj...

So no abnormal wear on the tailwheel from doing that Frank?I very rarely pick up the tail on the Drifter.I find I get off the ground sooner and smoother.Frank.Pud

G'day,
My undercarriage springs don't seem to be the correct configuration - they are different to springs on another T500, although I have seen a similar set on a T300.
What I am chasing is a template, drawings/specifications for the correct spring configuration. I have tried to contact TOSG and Tony Hayes Systems with no luck so far.
So, is there anybody here who can help me please?

Thanks Maj,Hi There Pud, I believe the stuff I use is a Locktite product. Its in a black tube, any good bearing place should carry it, or something similiar. Often it is referred to as 'nickle anti-sieze'.It is not meant as a sealant, so I don't know if it will stop the oil leakage in your case, as it may take an hour or two to settle things in a bit.Generally we use it in the industry as a barrier againt corrosion between aluminum and steel, as in the case on sparkplugs.
Good to hear you are making noise over there at last Pud.................Maj...

Yes it was music to the ears:laugh: It sounds really good with excellent response and no abnormal vibration that I could see. The run in process will be completed once the aircraft is secured properly so it can't move at full revs.
We still have a few things to go before test flying - Wayne Fisher is doing the wing skins for me and some decisions need to be made regarding the undercarriage springs. The wheels are 'splayed' out already with no wings, fuel or pilot yet. I want to acquire a template or drawings/specifications of the correct spring configuration so I can check it out.
Cheers,
Pud

Maj, Would you care to let me know what the anti-seize paste is please?I use a silver anti-sieze paste on exhaust joints (light film) which assists them in 'bedding in' for a good leakfree seal. Maj...
My T500 582 was fired up on Saturday with 1:40 oil/fuel mix for running in, and I noticed oil leaking from the exhaust joint where the bend coupling attaches to the manifold. Would the anti-seize paste assist here? We did not proceed with the run in procedure.

Jeez Ian,It seems David hasn't paid for the domain renewal. I just called him but he is now on holidays till next year so I paid it myself...it should be back up again soonThanks very much but ya gotta stop doing this stuff!!!

just another reason why I like to promote this site to all who listen. By the way.... Is there any progress on business cards to hand out?

It seems the TOSG website is doomed. I just tried to access the website but it doesn't exist anymore.
Does anyone know what's going on with TOSG?
Pud
PS. What I really want is to contact Tony Hayes Training Systems but cannot find their contact details. I'm aware Tony is not with us any longer but does anyone have the contact details as I want a T500 Manual?

Thanks striker,Here's how my thruster sits with the new springs Pud. I'm told the wheels should be vertical when loaded with fuel and people. I'm happy with the ride and having a home strip/ paddock it's good to have the heavy duty setup and yes it does sit lower. The spring diagram is in the Tony Hayes T500 manual, which has a lot of other useful information in too.
Pulled the thruster out for a flight yesterday afternoon. Magic. Cheers.......Phil

Nice looking machine you have there. My wheels are 'toe out' already without wings, fuel or me!!! on board yet. Might have to revisit the undercarriage configuration before the test flight.
Glad to hear you went for a fly, I'm rather envious.
Cheers,

Thanks biggles,Pud, I purchased the Vertex pro a couple of years ago from Ian, very happy with the unit, it does require some reading of the manual to get your head around the controls etc, but performs all functions extremely well. I use it as a back up to the A/C radio. Was at the aero club the other day with the vertex turned on and monitoring an inbound aircraft, it was commented by another that they would not usually pick up an aircraft 10 miles out, with such clarity, with their handheld(Icom). Hope this helps.Vote 1 for Vertex:laugh:

I'm looking to purchase a handheld from the shop here and need your help. Which make and model would you go for between the Icom and Vertex handhelds. I've read every thread in this section on radios and found some good stuff, just need to decide on the brand and model, then team it with a good intercom and aerial.
Your thoughts please.

This might be out of left field and a touch naive, but is there anyway to 'distil' the ethanol out of the mix and end up with a useable fuel?

I agree. I was taught the 10nm method and it works particularly well for me because I like the idea of calculating everything from a known constant. I work in the building industry where all levels and measurements come from a datum point (known constant) so maybe that is why the 10nm method works so well for me. But you need the clock as others have said - time and distance will give you enough to work out where you are and all else flows from that.I was taught, like, and use 10nm markers measured back from the destination (waypoint). In addition, elapsed times to each waypoint are calculated based on forecast winds and a multi-timer used to count down the time to run. On reaching a waypoint, you can adjust your times by dead reckoning, or if the timer has run out and you haven't found the waypoint, and you didn't have a greater than expected head wind, then lost procedures. (The timer continues below zero and shows as a negative time to run).Ground speed can be read off the GPS, but in the event that you aren't using one or it fails, then it is easy to simply fly a 360 degree circle and watch the IAS and compass, from which you can estimate wind strength and direction. You could also just measure time between two navigation reference points or map features or the 10nm marks. If people want to use time marks and that works for them. Great, but you will notice that time also comes into the method I use. Time and distance are both important.

Thanks ozzie,i use Shell as i have their fuel card. pumps marked as follows yellow E10, blue 95 no ethanol, red 98 no ethanol.pumps labled to use use 95 not E10 in marine craft and garden equipment no mention of ultralights as per caltex. not sur of other major suppliers in NSW as i don't frequent them. I notice that E10 is now around 10cpl cheaper than 95. used to be 3 cents
I checked out the links davidh10 posted so, with that information and no markings on pumps mentioning 'E10' or ethanol, I'll take it there is no ethanol blends in WA fuel at the moment. Can't see it lasting though.

G'day LincsLynx,I'm heading up the A1 to snowy Scunthorpe in the morning, you'll know where that is, only slightly apprehensive as to how deep it is up there. You're right about winter gliding, they were up the other day from our local Buckminster Gliding Club at Saltby, Lincs.Saltby is an old WW2 U.S. airfield, on the northern edge of RAF Cottesmore military airspace, currently a Harrier Gr9 training base.
I'm not flying at the moment, wish I was.
However, currently it's pretty interesting piloting my Honda Civic around on sheet ice; when the tyres go quiet as the tail jitters, trying to extinguish the flashing traction control warning light by feathering the throttle, it sure keeps the concentration levels up.
It's fun too.
I doubt you get to do much of that where you are, if global warming gets that bad we're all done for.
On which note, I can tell you it's 23.25 here and a genuine -10C. on my apple tree.
Jeez, it's cold!
I know what you mean, we are going through a cold snap here in Western Australia at the moment;) - forecast is for 24c today and warming a little to 33c by the weekend. It is very dry (drought conditions) here, in contrast to the East Coast where people are being evacuated because of floods, and more to come. Strange weather indeed.
Was talking to a glider pilot the other day who is enjoying the weather at the moment, with booming thermals and up to 800 kms travelled in a single flight. Getting some serious altitude readings as well - 15,000 feet.
Cheers,
Pud

How do you know ozzie? In NSW, at least in the Shell at the moment you have 95 and 98 that contain no ethanolPud
-
Any idea where I might find the ethanol situation in WA?As per another thread, The NSW and Qld state governments have legislated to force Ethanol into 91 RON Unleaded, so when that happens, there will be no choice in those states but to buy PULP to avoid the Ethanol.Cheers,
Pud

Low altitude sickness
I reckon I have lost the mojo and I definitely have LAS - Low Altitude Sickness:sad:
I haven't flown since 26th June and will definitely be having a check flight and an hour of circuits before venturing too far.
