I have been reading a few old "crash comics" and one stand out is that fat more aircraft are damaged by over the fence speeds high than low. I fly a Flight Design CT that has an approach speed in the book of about 50kt. depending on weight, with a stall in the high 30's. If you come over the fence at over 60 it will refuse to land and sits in ground effect till you eventually slow down or hit the fence at the far end. what can therefore happen is that the pilot tries to force a landing by using forward stick and destroys the nose gear. I am not saying that this happened in this case but it looks like it to me. Another possibility is that the pilot was used to flying heavier stuff and flared too high ran out of airspeed then fell the rest of the way to the ground - low inertia aircraft do that to you.

.....no of course you would not put gin on ice because that would dilute the gin. Gin is strictly for adding to beer. You can, if you like add Glycol to ice because it tastes terrible so it dose not matter if you waste that on ice for some petty aviation related reason......

Captain my understanding is that the only way you can fail this course is to "fail to pay". A further point to my critics is that the 300 hrs. signed off in the log book in one day is that as you get nearer the eeequateer it gets hotter and so time goes faster due to the higher D/A. The other point is that $100 normally does not buy a lot of actual multi engine turbine time, so some is sim time and we all know time goes faster when you are standing still. The need for the rocket endorsement is because a normal JATO will still not get a 747 off the ground in an average ultralight paddock so you need rocket. So now with the clarification complete. does not include formation .......

got on to Ebay to find that Air Asia is selling multi engine endorsements for about $100 + GST. It is a full on one day course but for that you get a MECR, full IFR/night, a G1 instructor, ATPL, piston/turbine/rocket, and 300 hrs. signed off in the log book. Not bad for a days work but it does not include formation. ................

Never heard of this letter of authority from RAAus. A factory built properly equipped a/c can be flown in CTA. The limitation is on the pilot to be licensed and current.

Onetrack with the greatest of respect please do not take things out of context. I would never send the grandkids off to do their own thing. They are closely supervised at all times. If you read between the lines I mentioned she is 12 yo. and about to learn to ride a motorbike in other words when she is ready to learn and that also means accept the associated responsibilities that go with this learning. If some one sends a 7yo out on a 600cc quad that is just stupid. A part of the reason that a 17 yo has a problem with handling a vehicle is as you say the fact that immaturity is a problem and it is also a "dog let off a chain" problem. If you grow up using machinery of whatever sort under supervision it becomes second nature to respect the dangers and limitations of that equipment. It is the job of the trainer to introduce the new skills as the student is ready to absorb the new learning. I believe that the age is not the determinate factor when it comes to teaching anything but when someone is ready to learn they can be taught. I would never suggest that you let kids loose to "run their own race" but in the right environment when a child is ready they can be taught under supervision to learn new skills and that also involves driving. At 12 yo my son could back a truck and trailer combination he is now in his forties and still has his first car which has a modified v8 never had a at fault collision does not get traffic tickets in other words is a model citizen but exposed to machinery at an early age. Ok I will get off my soap box now.

The adv. is for the aeroplane not the pilot. I therefor stand by my statement that the adv. is in fact a statement of fact.

Thanks for the tangent, learning driving from an early stage seems to make the difference between steerers and drivers and this empathy with machinery also follows for aircraft boats trucks and any thing else that requires a "big picture" situational awareness. I may get slammed for admitting this but my grandkids had a ball last week doing their version of synchronized dancing on my runway with the Bobcat and Zero turn mower and they are primary school kids. The point being that they grow up operating machinery have empathy and control comes naturally. My 12 yo grand daughter is very safe operating my backhoe and next month will by introduced to riding a motorbike. Properly supervised they learn and safety becomes second nature over time.

Like Skippy I have a burgular alarm siren mounted under the cowel to move the roos off the strip. The problem is that the roos have gotten used to the sound and these days take less notice. I have 1.2m high farm fence that they just hop over at will except for the joeys which try to push through the ringlock get blocked then in a panic just go anywhere. If I drive the ute on the strip to pop a few bunnies the roos scatter straight away, my other half thinks I should thke the rifle in the plane but I don't have an interrupter for that and I worry about the prospects for my prop.

Which remindes me about a storey I heard last year when santa stopped at YKTN and realised that CASA were doing ramp checks. Santa rang Mike {CFI} and said "my flight review is out of date are you night rated, CASA are coming soon". No problem said Mike I will get my equipment and be right over you do a flight plan in the meantime. Santa was horified when mike turned up with a pump action 12 gauge shotty on his shoulder and said you can't have that gun on my sleigh. Mike says I need it, it is part of my equipment. Santa stands his ground and says no loaded firearms on my sleigh why would you need that anyway? To which Mike replies "look I am not supposed to tell you this but you are going to loose an engine on take off".

re write the rules for a flight review under the new licence system. They walked the chooks across a puddle of ink then onto butchers paper then called it the part 149 ............ {149 being the number of chook feet by their count}

Following a discussion with family the vote goes to "Chicken run" . About a repressed group locked up and facing certain death. Call them chicken but really brave and inventive to effect an aviation escape. Uses a bit of animation and from an engineering view about as convincing as "Flight of the phoenix" but the family liked it.

Tabletop in NSW just near YMAY now closed, My brother used to own a farm north of the APM plantation. Over the Ettamoga pub on downwind high tension wires on aproach a bit short and a bit uphill. Total length measured 400 yards 15ft wide. Side slip down final to touch down on the flat bit then curve left around the big gum tree up hill to a big spoon drain then into the cattle yards. A one way strip that you have to pay attention to. Landed there many times in the Skyfox

I look foward to the flight review because I would like to keep sharp and not develop any bad / lazy habits. I should mention that I have absolute respect for the CFI. The flight review process can be used to gain knowledge or practice in any aera that you want and does not have to follow any set formula. I have about 2500 hrs. all private flying but still feel that I can get benefit from a review.

I have well over a thousand hrs. in my Skyfox and can say that it is not a good idea to three point it in a crosswind. A tail low wheeler is the best option and the runway length needed is not much different to a three pointer. I always use forward stick to keep the tail up as long as possible on roll out. What happens in the flare for a three pointer is that the wing masks the rudder and you can feel the rudder getting progressively softer as the angle gets steeper. Also if you are going to rely on the tailwheel for directional control you are going to ground loop for sure. It will unlatch right when you need it the most. Rudder is king and the landing is not complete till the billy is on. I agree with Nev that some a/c are better to 3 point and others not, some don't matter either way. I am happy flying in gusty crosswinds in the Skyfox or the CT. you just have to be awake and pay attention. Greg

Engine fail in high drag low inertia such as Thruster is still not as hard to manage as engine fail in a pusher eg. Drifter because a Thruster will lower the nose anyway but a Drifter will pitch up on power loss. If you are climbing at best angle (50kt.) best rate (50kt.) best glide (50kt.) the pitch up on power loss will very quickly kill the airspeed, remembering that you are close to stall anyway, will need a rapid and positive response.

I also had to fit a siren to get the wildlife off the runway. I used a burglar alarm siren from the local Jacar electronics aviation supply company. it is surface mount 12v piezo and uses very little current. I screwed it to the firewall. Use a mini toggle switch with supply from the landing light circuit.

To make your Rotax quieter just add a turbo. My CTLSt 914 with constant speed Neuform prop is very quiet to the extent that my next door neighbor even commented on how little he can hear it.

Some years ago at Lethbridge back when Nev was instructing there {maybee 20 yrs back} a member took off in a little single seater a bit like a small thruster for YBLT about 30 nm away in a strong wind. He returned 3/4hour later having made it all the way to Meredith about 6nm got worried about fuel and came back. we watched him turn final and I put the billy on. Water boiled tea made before he touched down. Greg
