  1. It is with sadness that I advise that George Brown (browng of the forums) was killed in the accident at Bindoon WA on 21st December 2007, 16:45 WST.

George has been a big member of these forums since June of this year and has made 271 posts helping others out, joining in the conversations and been a member that many other members have truly respected. I will miss him.

When I was looking back over his posts I had to laugh when he said about ADSB and his Cub:

But my old girl doesn't have a master, or a generator, or a battery, and as a fully certified type I can't just stick bits on...what about ME?

    and then when Nev said:

browng. Vee haf vays off making you squawk... Nef.

    George came back with:

Anybody know a good way of getting coffee out of a keyboard?

All one has to do is look through George's posts and you would see the kind of guy that he was - genuine, honest and willing to help others out.

George - you will be sadly missed and I thank you for all you have said and done here and I know that you will be at home with the angels as they too don't have a master, or a generator, or a battery - happy flying George

  2. Tony, you have hit on some good points and a referendum I also feel would be the most "professional" step that the board could take in this decision.

One thing that I feel I should say to qualify my post is that we also need to think strategically. If we try and maintain our isolation from the CASA objectives we just may find ourselves in trouble hence why I said that we should go for it but with clear distinction between the lines of RA and GA. If CASA wants to off-load the administration of the recreational arena of flying then we may well find other organisations going for the whole box and dice - remember we are still controlled by CASA under licence. I personally don't feel that CASA would like to just hand it all over and have no control - they want someone else to do the work but still have the control. It would therefore make sense for CASA to only have one body that they can easily control to administer the entire recreational arena. So, strategically I felt that it was better to be us with as I said distinct lines of differentiation, then to risk the potential of losing our current freedoms by having some other body, perhaps driven by GA or warbirds or experimental etc taking control of us.

Perhaps there are other ways to protect us then to try and keep us in a box - you know the saying - keep your friends close by and your enemies even closer

Just a thought to add to the discussion!

  3. Oh, and another thing - in fact there are a lot of things to consider - but the criteria for board members would have to change - don't get me wrong with what I am saying but to administer a group like this you would need to have a strong board. The problem I am getting to is that we will find all the GA'ers coming in on the board and Recreational (ultralights) would be forgotten - this is an issue that could be addressed by a 50/50 split of where the board members come from but the Ultralight board members would have to be darn strong members as the GA'ers could be airline pilots, big business people etc, all very strong people.

  4. Thanks Cazza (as always)!

I will weigh in on this from a personal standpoint and not as the admin of these forums.

I believe it would be great for the RA-Aus to go whole hog into securing the rights for the admin of GA BUT with a string attached. That the RA as it is today remains that way, in other words that the freedoms that we have remain with say a MTOW of 600kg as a differentiation barrier. The GA side is administered with somewhat of the same constraints that are currently in place.

The benefits to us RA members is that we get a strong and powerful organisation that can represent us to the politicians with more clout without losing our freedoms (maintenance, flying costs etc) plus our membership costs should actually go down as our current admin overheads like wages, rent, power etc would be spread across a larger user base - although given that extra employees would be needed but still they would be paid for by GA - economies of scale!

the above in my opinion represents two powerful reasons why we should support the board in going for it - we will still be us and have what we have now but cheaper and finally heard ;)

  5. Actually it is now down to 26 - Gee Bees at Essendon Airport took 5 and and will want more.

There is some great film clips in the DVD of formation flying of two mustangs with a P38 and an F15 - the mustangs are going as fast as they can and the F15 going as slow as they can - one of the pilots is one of the Apollo 8 astronauts. There is also the Wright glider replica taking flight where 100 years ago the Wright Bros did it.

  6. Tony, I hope you know that if there is ANYTHING I can do to ensure the continuation and growth of TOSG then PLEASE just simply let me know - if you want to bounce any ideas off me then do so, you never know what resources I have and can conjure up unless you let me know what you would like to do.

I am at your disposal and I hope that many other forum members will put their hand up to ensure our recreational flying heritage is kept - this is so important to us as a group of recreational flyers.

  7. The CT is well known for its glide so a lot of times coming in on final at idle and at 55kts I have actually been climbing - the CT is the best aircraft I know to practice your go-arounds 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif. I know of one CFI that said he knew what he was doing when he was coming in high and trying for the right glide slope only to find out the hard way with two go-arounds and being left with egg on his face.

I found that with the CT it was actually better to fly her in lower then the right glide slope and with a trickle of power on - driving her in - and then just feel the flare and let her come down when she wanted to. I found this was far safer then to lower the airspeed closer to the stall as anything can happen then. If there was any wind of any kind I wouldn't go near the 40deg flap setting and I always preferred the 15deg rather then 30 or 40 in the CT - mind you sometimes I would start the decent at 30deg and switch back to 15deg at a safe height to control the "flyin" better.

  8. I am really encouraged by seeing people not only posting their incidences here for us to all learn from but also what seems like forum members realising the objectives and culture of these forums i.e. the friendliness that is paramount here - to see members supporting each other in terms of moderation is great to see - a big thanks 011_clap.gif.c796ec930025ef6b94efb6b089d30b16.gif

Motz - a lesson that you learnt which has helped us all to know about and discuss has been great - well done Mate!
