A very small part of my Post and I also said it was a rumor and I can't remember any Pilot's I knew Male or female who wore them and questioned whether an aviator needed one. You are clutching at straws, T510

You are the one who took the conversation below the belt Nev, everyone else was happy focusing on the wrist till you started discussing other pilots packages.

 

To drag the conversation back on topic, I was dubious as to how much use I would get out of a smart watch until I got one as a bonus when I upgraded my phone a few years ago.

 

Now I prefer them and see that Garmin D2 having functions like INREACH, live tracking, satellite SOS and the ability to use it as a back up for weather and navigation makes for a handy risk mitigator and backup device should I have multiple failures. 

 

I also like having the health and fitness monitoring capabilities amongst the other non aviation functions.

Very useful when flying IFR in light aircraft - panel mounted timepieces more often than not U/S - yoke mounted stopwatch good too but too many gadgets are distracting - I used a simple (expensive) Longines no extra bits - good second sweep hand - and very easy to read at night. I wore it on the inside of my left wrist - easy to glance at while timing a holding pattern/approach and holding the yoke with my left hand. Lot of PPL IFR pilot friends  did the same thing.

 

I don't fly IFR any more only RA-Aus stuff - my weapon of choice is my Apple watch - super good when Ozrunways had the RWY app on Apple watch - Sporty's E6B - good too - lots of other good aviation apps

 

I like DJP's choice too but the Apple watch is more versatile as I use it for lots of other things - timers for pickleball, petanque, sailing apps   etc etc

I'm hoping to finally do my navs soon. While I was on holidays I bought this G-Shock. Duty free. Duty free is the biggest load of bollocks, but I was on a cruise ship and there it was. Pretty much the same price as if I had bought it in Brissie. But there's a million different ever changing models so I struck while the iron was hot. G-Shock are from Casio so quite reliable. I've known a few people that like them because they can bang them around doing manual stuff and they keep working and who cares about a scratch here or there.

 

Digital face for UTC (I think that's showing Lisboa time at the moment). Also has stopwatch and alarm. Playschool clock for local time 🙂

GMT Zulu) ELAPS and the stop watch function are what you will find most useful. Till you operate that way you won't know. You can fly a timed circuit, Overfly and do a procedure turn  to Base/final  and do holding timed patterns Time fuel tank  changes, position reports etc. Time equates to distance when you have a groundspeed. Know what  nautical miles you do in a minute. A clip on your Panel or Maybe Velcro will make using the Watch much easier.   Watches on your wrist easily catch on things and a loose coat sleeve or glove will obscure it. Nev
