He was a drug smuggler. He wasn't 'doing' the drugs. He was supplying people who do. It's supply and demand, baby!

Yes I was addressing the Demand aspect in particular. Nev

The clue is in the destination. Americans are some of the unhappiest and most anxious people in the world. This leads to

1) lots of violent people

2) lots of self medicating people via drug and alcohol abuse.

The way to reduce both 1 and 2 is to have a more equitable society. One where people aren't afraid to go on holidays in case their job is gone when they come back. Where you don't automatically get frog marched out the front door by security if you get fired. Where a working class person doesn't end up having to declare personal bankruptcy because they broke their leg Etc etc.

To be fair, all countries have some level of problem, but the US is on another level. It blows my mind how many people there lap it up thinking they're living the good life

If the US tomorrow suddenly had proper Medicare and social security, Columbian drug barons would go broke 😄

Good points but if that is true Australia would not have a drug problem.

The dentist in my town got busted selling drugs. People had been going to him for years and had no idea he was a dentist.🤫

There are areas around Melbourne that would give America a run for its money.  Drugs and crime are out of control here the last few years.

I think his point was easily understood - IF the USA had a social safety net, similar to most other advanced nations, the illicit drug problem would likly be much less than it is.

While abusing your body with drugs (legal & illegal) can afflict every strata of society, there is no doubt it disproportionally impacts the poor.

Speculation:

The USA has the most advanced, intrenched, culturally condoned & promoted violence in the western World - I very much doubt that anywhere in Australia can be compared.

The murder of just one person, in Au, hits the national news. The USA has a murder somewhere every few minutes

From Google;

Australia's homicide rate roughly 0.85-9.9 per 100,000 people

USA homicide rate 6.8 per 100,000 people and has been declining for some time.

UK 8.6 homicides recorded per million

My point was we have excellent health care here yet drugs and crime is a huge problem.

Far more than you would know living in your safe bubble.

No I am not exaggerating.  There are some areas around Melbourne where the crime and violence is up there with anywhere else in the world.  Machete attacks are on the rise again. Even after the bins that were going to solve the problem.

Richmond injecting center next to a primary school. It s not uncommon for kids to walk around bodies on the footpath and dealers selling meths outside the school.

Shootings every day . One building site I go to the cops have to keep removing the junkies that go in attacking workers . Lovely place.

That poor farmer at ouyen last week getting murdered and his body towed across a paddock before they buried him. Police think he came across a middle eastern crime gang rustling on his farm.

I don't doubt your concern or the possibility that your local area has a particular issue/problem however the Au wide statistics do not back you up.

As for my "safe bubble"Bubble suggests lack of awareness/complacency - not true. Just not so easily influenced by alarmist language, however heart felt.

Brendan - It is my impression, that your writen language has, in resent times,  become overly combative to the point of personal  attacks eg what would you know of where I live now or my personal  history. Best not to go down the personal observation track, without in depth knowledge of the person (me).😈
