might be that an AoA thingy might be more useful in say a Pitts or a Lancair ...................... not so much in an ultralight

thanks BT - that's the first ultralight I've heard of with a stall warning device ............... what %age have them I do not know ?
if a stall warning device is seen as such a critical thing (for) - why do some planes not have them (against)
-
I remember the 'audio stall warning' with GA planes
I'd be interested to know of there are any ultralights with them - I can't imagine it is a common installation ?
I prefer silence than that annoying stall warning - what say you ? - or what advantage is there in having an audio stall warning (if any) ?
-
don't know eloigorri but its not a big task to remove the plastic cabin lining above - for a look
................... your comment re stall warning could make an another interesting topic - I'll try that in 'general discussion' - thanks
-
on any of these 300 kg planes (particularly high wing) its easy to get one person to lift the wingtip .................. thereby lifting the wheel off the ground and another person to check if the leg is secure ?
-
yes the autogiro would probably be a double edged sword ................ you could see further but others could see you from further afar as well ?
-
a light plastic rubbish bag with a perimeter wire frame at the bag open end .................. also a 'X' of wire at the open end and a 'little lucifer' fire starter on the 'X' can make a very effective potential UFO (bag ascends & glows)
-
I'll furnish you with an 'agree' Frank
Ryan4321 has alerted us in any case ................ we are all the better for it

when crossing the street you can never predict the outcome - you have a fair idea though
if you had 2 paddocks - one with shorter or flattened grass - the other long - the choice would be easy
you could try a takeoff roll - in the 1st 50m you would know if things were looking OK
-
don't know if the following would actually work for an ultralight .................. but just read a book where pilot in an ag plane (big feet) landed on a tight coastal paddock (to do some fishing)
before takeoff he ran up and down the strip a few times to flatten long grass and had a marked take off run
......................... might not work with skinny tyres - worth a thought and a go though ?
-
irrespective of any outcome Ryan .................... I think the majority of us appreciate what you have told us
You are a more experienced pilot cause of it (and some of us will lean from it)
I've been to that strip and did not have a problem - also plane I fly you get nose wheel off the ground at say 10 knots - so I guess my drag decreases a third ?
Thanks ryan

WOW - $ 457 per annum sub ................ sounds like a golf clubAll instructors are volunteers to the club. Annual club membership is $457. It cost me around $4000 to obtain my pilots certificate and cross country / passenger endorsement. We also have a theory instructor who donates his time.gympie aero club takes the view that they would rather have the person rather than the money (only $ 60 / annum sub) (the club gets income from hangar fees so the sub is not critical for funds)

what about a jail house Ian
if you get banned - you throw the avatar in the slammer - we can go and see who is doing time

what about - VFR has to be 1000 ft vertical from cloud
I have done some gliding and I'd find it difficult to believe that all gliders stay 1000 ft vertically away from cloud at ALL times
-
how does 24:1 sound ? - glide ratio for a big bird - numbers from post 35
cruise ? - 35,000 ft
140 nm - 850,000 ft
glide = 24:1

I'll halve that Old K (average 50 km / h)
if a car could do 5,000,000 kms - the automotive manufacturing industry would be ruined
car salesman would be hiring the mafia to pour sugar in car fuel tanks at night ............... etc etc

.................. ain't that life !My motto is no matter how many hours or years experience you have or what aircraft you are flying, you never know everything, for me I am learning something new every day.You make mistakes, you learn from them. Someone offers you advise or a different perspective, your learning.Every day is another day of learning something new.

Gee thanks Turboplanner - I try my best
!Stuff quality and value ............. although they are fine attributes we all don't come out of the same mold
participation an opinion is way more important ........... it adds to the fabric of the conversation - hence number of posts works well (all for fun with rank)

your postal code in a way is a ranking system (or seems to be used as one in surveys) ............... and we seem to be able to live with that
the number of posts probably indicates interest, wit, keeness, good intent, a person enjoying and using the site - number of posts (as opposed to likes) seems OK to me
-
as said before - I am told the NZ model for accident compensation ? has been beneficial - a levy is paid by each tax payer ?
if you lose a finger its so much - if you lose a leg .................. you get more. A life, more again
no worse than any levy that any Oz now pays for the courts, pills, roads, health, aviation safety (should I also mention pollies ?)
etc etc
could be something to consider & might be a fairer society
of course any change will mean someone will miss out on the existing money shuffle in our Courts

Checklists and procedures
in Student Pilot & Further Learning
Posted
I have often wondered why 'hatches' and 'harness' are in a downwind checklist - unless something happened like a passenger vacating the plane (which should have been noticed and remembered) ....................
I guess 'hatches' and 'harness' could always be there in case of a force landing checklist ? (crack the doors and safety belts firm ?)
