    wikipedia - could be true .................... some have mentioned these reasons - sounds fair to me 'wiki quote The extra weight provided by the water ballast is advantageous if the lift is likely to be strong, and may also be used to adjust the glider's center of mass. Moving the center of mass toward the rear by carrying water in the vertical stabilizer reduces the required down-force from the horizontal stabilizer and the resultant drag from that down-force. Although heavier gliders have a slight disadvantage when climbing in rising air, they achieve a higher speed at any given glide angle. This is an advantage in strong conditions when the gliders spend only a small amount of time climbing in thermals. The pilot can jettison the water ballast before it becomes a disadvantage in weaker thermal conditions'

    Remind us oscar ..... whats the water ballast for? Whats the forward lhs cockpit lever .... pilot slidind it fore and aft ? Thanks

    yes - club members planes (in various hangar locations on the strip) and club members hangars BT (local Council insists on hangar keepers insurance - hanger sites are leased from Council) I'd be guessing we would have 10 hangars and say 12 planes covered this way Also, I don't know if 'the club' is the mechanism - could be 'a group' of persons might be able to achieve the same result

    yes - if you are lucky ? enough to have an aero club at your strip - multiple hangars and planes can be lumped into one policy (hangars and planes separate) and you can get good / great savings on insurance premiums

    here is a message I got from an insurance broker .............. might shed some light on it I can confirm that the Australian Allianz office for aviation will no longer be offering renewals or quoting new risks from the 1st January 2017. However, the head underwriter from Allianz will be starting up an agency (Agile) on the 1st January with the intention of continuing to write aircraft programmes just like the one we have arranged for aircraft based at xxxxxxxxxxxxx Although Allianz is withdrawing from the Australian aviation market on the 1st January, a number of their underwriters and their claims manager will remain until the 31st December 2017 ensuring changes to policies and claims are processed smoothly. When the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx aircraft programme and Hangarkeepers liability policy falls due for renewal next year we will approach the market (QBE, Catalyst, AIG, Swiss Re) as well as Agile for terms.

    Superannuation: with bankruptcy there is no protection ................................. in relation to other litigation - superannuation is protected - is this perhaps correct ? 'Interestingly, superannuation has statutory protection from creditors if you are a small business owner. “Unless the business owner makes an unusual contribution to defeat the creditors when they know litigation is on the cards, super is protected,” says Balalovski.'

    yes - pilots, petrol heads and mechanics would rather listen to how good that radial sound is ............. the majority of the rest would probably prefer the music - doubt you would go to an aviation site to listen to music though

    Some of these seat belts are not readily adjustable - you can't easily tighten them up a notch if you find yourself doing a forced landing They can be adjusted ................... but best adjusted on the ground prior to engine start

    I have often wondered why 'hatches' and 'harness' are in a downwind checklist - unless something happened like a passenger vacating the plane (which should have been noticed and remembered) .................... I guess 'hatches' and 'harness' could always be there in case of a force landing checklist ? (crack the doors and safety belts firm ?)

    might be that an AoA thingy might be more useful in say a Pitts or a Lancair ...................... not so much in an ultralight

    thanks BT - that's the first ultralight I've heard of with a stall warning device ............... what %age have them I do not know ? if a stall warning device is seen as such a critical thing (for) - why do some planes not have them (against)

    I remember the 'audio stall warning' with GA planes I'd be interested to know of there are any ultralights with them - I can't imagine it is a common installation ? I prefer silence than that annoying stall warning - what say you ? - or what advantage is there in having an audio stall warning (if any) ?

    don't know eloigorri but its not a big task to remove the plastic cabin lining above - for a look ................... your comment re stall warning could make an another interesting topic - I'll try that in 'general discussion' - thanks

    on any of these 300 kg planes (particularly high wing) its easy to get one person to lift the wingtip .................. thereby lifting the wheel off the ground and another person to check if the leg is secure ?

    yes the autogiro would probably be a double edged sword ................ you could see further but others could see you from further afar as well ?

    a light plastic rubbish bag with a perimeter wire frame at the bag open end .................. also a 'X' of wire at the open end and a 'little lucifer' fire starter on the 'X' can make a very effective potential UFO (bag ascends & glows)
