  1. A very interesting read, that article in the first post.

I'm wonder how a wrong physical dimension can pass QA these days in an aircraft engine? Perhaps poor metallurgy or heat treating, but the OD of the bush being undersized.....

  2. ....... will no doubt compete pretty well in the four seater market.

Or fast high end twin seaters which in the past have been limited to 912 ULS or 914.....

40% more power may give 15 or 20 kts extra if slippery enough. Then add "normalization" at altitude as well....

How would it go in a Jab 230? Ignoring the price of course.....lol

  3. Just a well-intentioned note to the OP and other future posters of events that people might like to have some idea of what the thread is about ... a title like 'what happened today' tells us nothing.Suggest OP and others might in future consider a title more like 'Sling 4 crash at Caboolture 12th August 2017' ... if you like.

Yeah, there needs to be a standard format. "aircraft type", "incident type", "location", "date".

  4. Taking "exclusiveness" to an extreme.

If one aircraft mfg came up with the dollars could they then ban all other aircraft?

If one catering supplier came up with the cash, could they ban all other food venues/stalls/vans?

Wouldn't it be awsome that ALL cost were covered and the the event ran at a profit?

Unfortunately the only aircraft on dispay would be from Jabiru (for example) and there would be only one "hot dog" van selling food.

The 120 people that attended, ( most being Jabiru owners) loved it but there were a few complains about the lack of variety of food.

The RAA put out an email about how great the event was. Income exceeded costs due the generosity of the sponsors and they look forward to holding a successful event next year. They also said the new "exclusive supplier" format would be used in future years as this took out some of the uncertainty in funding such a large event.

Do we want the money, or do we want the event? No doubt there is the "middle of the road" ........somewhere.......

  5. Maybe that was a factor in what happened.Consider that perhaps he began a takeoff with the traffic flow, as he possibly had done many times, then driver in front stops for a pedestrian, he panics and hold full back stick, unwittingly stalling the wing and increasing drag, making acceleration very difficult.

Yeah. I think he either hoped to takeoff or hop over it.....

  7. I have a property not far from there and regularly see these aircraft gliding in very low, which has concerned me for some time, thinking it's just a matter of time

As part of pilot training and flight reviews you practise engine failures and emergency landings.

Generally the instructor "pulls"the engine to idle and the student finds, and then manoeuvres the aircraft into a pretend landing at a suitable place.

Before actual landing the instructor or student applies power and they fly away.

Generally these areas are familiar to the instructor.

This maybe what you are seeing......

  8. I was quoted a 582 at 1600 hrs by an owner...... still in spec but but just thought he'd "better" change it as he had a spare engine ready to go. He considers 300 hrs "just broke in"...lol.

In a trike, flown by a hard core triker.....flown multiple times per week. If the weather was ok, he would fly.

Quite a few people say the secret is to not let them sit. I tend to believe this.

  9. "Mayor Mick Curran said it had only come to his attention in the past fortnight that there had been "about 12" near-misses in the past five years."

I would have thought 12 in 5 yrs was alright?

Sounds like council chasing excuses for a hidden agenda (noise) and leveraging on safety?..... "They include forbidding aircraft to land between sunset and sunrise...." "helicopters are no longer allowed hover...."

"......crisis meetings with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority....."...... lol....grandstanding to the public to make them look credible and serious....

  10. A friend who flys GA, said he would never get an engine overhauled is aus.

It is cheaper to air freight an engine to aero sport power in Canada and return than here in aus.

Cheaper again to buy second hand in USA, ship to Canada for full rebuild and then to aus.

Saves 20 to 30 grand easy he recons.....

Another friend is expecting his transponder back from the mfg in the USA after repairs. All up cost A $500.

    Quoted in aus, $1500......

I know it's not good sending stuff away from aussie companies, but when you're talking hundreds of percent difference in price....well.

    30 percent, ok....50 percent....maybe.....but 300 percent?

  11. Hey,My 618 cost me $580 to get it The with insurance and $450 to get it back.

I went through CheapCouriersCompare and used TNT which is now owned by FedEx.

I shipped the engine on the 6th July and the engine has now already been returned on Monday 24th. Including Rebuild time. Very quick and price better than I thought.

My full parcel weighed in at 57kg because I sent Gearbox and all.

A 503 is a lot lot smaller and lighter! I would estimate $600 return shipping

And I believe you don't pay gst because it is a returning item?

  12. In my experience helicopters do have a different set of rules. I don't think they are written down and I think making them up on the spot must be taught as part of the course.

You mean like flying in from any direction, at any height, straight to the fuel bowser........ I do think I know where you're coming from...
