    Good news... I am training for my Ra-Aus certificate flying from the airfield at Palmyra Dragstrip just 15 minutes outside of Mackay.

    The Thrusters are flown... the one in the rafters is the school owners aircraft and is in the rafters at the moment to make a bit of room. The other belongs to a local student and should be back in the air soon, again in storage because of room with the wings off. I am told at least one of them will be available on hire from the school very shortly for endorsements and general flying.

    The HTC is the Iphone Style mobile phone for Telstra customers... actually a higher spec. phone than the current Iphone model... does everything and more the Iphone does.

     

    I am actually able to send videos/photos direct from my HTC Desire to Youtube/Facebook/Twitter etc (hey Ian how about an app to send photos/video directly to this sight from the new gen phones?). The only problem with sending video directly to youtube from the Desire is that it goes raw with no editing and I wanted to tidy them up a bit but was unable so far to import them into Windows Movie Maker to do this. I am going to try to send some video directly to Youtube (using my home Wifi rather than the phones direct link) so will update that as soon as I can.

     

     

  4. Hi Blackrod.

     

    Yes the HTC Desire is a great gadget... so much more than a phone...in fact if you just want a phone don't get one of these because its usefulness as one is waaaaay down the list of what it does. I found an app for it last night that turns it into an EPIRB!!!

     

    The Texan... well what can I say. Compared to the Jabiru170 it is a whole new experience. The extra 20hp makes a huge difference. I was seeing 800-1000fpm indicated climb at 70knots. She is RH stick/LH throttle and surprisingly didn't even notice this when flying. Stick forces are light at all times unlike the J170 which due to the enormous wing seems to take the strength of Goliath in certain fazes of flight. The view out of that bubble canopy is amazing. It generally has a much more controllable feel than the J170. Approach is much more comfortable at 60 knots.

     

    I guess for an extra $70 grand this is what you get... a lot more aeroplane in my opinion. I would like to fly a J120/160 (I think the enormous wing on the J170 combined with low power make it a bit of a dog) but not at all keen to get back into a J170 again.

     

    I felt I got more out of the 2 hours in the Texan than I got from the previous 12 hours I spent in the 170...

  5. On Sunday the 18th the Palmyra flying school took a ferry flight in a Cessna 210 to Clermont to spend the day training in a Texan Lsa... Here are some photos taken on my new HTC desire phone.

  6. I remember seeing people using these chutes in my wee early years... and my brother and I inherited a chute that looked very much like the one they were packing in the second video. It was old and stuffed... a couple of them sat in our garage for a year or so... I don't know how they were acquired but they were like old ex military things. Eventually my brother and I were allowed to put it in the middle of the garage and pull the ripcord... I remember expecting the chute to explode out like they did when parachutists pulled them but instead the laces just flopped out with the pilot chute on a spring.... such an anti climax! But we kept that old chute for years... used to inflate it in the street... Amazed we didnt get blown away to Oz...used it for shade at a party once.

     

    Parachuting has come a loooooooong way since then as a sport.

     

     

  7. Just got back from .7 hrs in the J170...

     

    Shags... And I thought it was me!!! lol

     

    But that said perhaps part of the reason is this...

     

    In the 6 weeks since my last lesson the aircraft had a tidy up... according to my instructor the controls had been lubricated, the motor had been tuned and I am sure they did more. Now because of the length of time between my last lesson and this one it is hard to be totally objective with this observation but... in my humble opinion... Compared to last lessons when the aircraft appeared to be sluggish and tired, today it felt so much better.

     

    So... perhaps the Jabiru is an aircraft that requires fastidious and skillful nursing and tweaking to get the best from it... and perhaps a lot of school jabiru's don't always get that?

    P.S. Jabiru 5229 is returning to its owner in Kingarooy... Tomorrow at 0600hrs I will be going in her with my instructor for the flight... . How is that for an introduction to cross country.

  8. I wish Garry every success... I think with the little I have seen he is passionate about the aircraft. And the little I have seen of the aircraft it is certainly something very special... The instrument panel alone is the best I have seen. Perhaps 10 years from now there will be as many certified factory Sierras around as Jabirus today...

     

     

  9. Facthunter... I didn't intend to suggest that it was ok for Tomo to do but not others... I was suggesting that the skills required to access the situation and take the appropriate action as Tomo did (correctly and safely in my opinion) is something we should all aspire to.

     

    The reason I suggest that flying to Monto with the problem would be different to flying the aircraft home after is because the trip to Monto involves flying to an unfamiliar airfield... I am sure if the home airfield of the aircraft was unsuitable for a no brake landing Tomo would not have done it.

     

    In my opinion he was well withing the envelope of safe flying...

     

     

  10. Ok... Here is something a little controversial... perhaps the brakes should not be relied upon as a safety tool. Handy to have but obviously not essential to the successful operation of an aircraft... if it was a Boeing 737... sure it would be totally unacceptable from a safety perspective to fly the aircraft without brakes. But we don't fly 737s recreationally... If you were to hire an aircraft with the brakes damaged or U/S then it would be unacceptable from an insurance perspective... if Tomo had arrived at the airshow having taken off from home base with the brakes U/S then it would have been unacceptable from an airmanship perspective...

     

    But... I was there and I watched Tomo pre-flight and take off and in my opinion the whole procedure was carried out professionally and safely and within the spirit and safety culture of Ra-Aus flying. And I would feel safer flying with Tomo or hiring him an aircraft in the knowledge that he knows enough about the aircraft and the procedures required to operate it that he could make this call and fly the aircraft home safely.
