  1. A random question would be more , well, random. For example, What is the percentage cheese fat one could expect from Anglo-nubian goats grazing on green pasture in Kazacstan in spring? Now I'd call that a random question. Or, What is the average rate of genetic mutation in Barn Owls? That would probably be a random question also.

    Poor Qwerty, you're bored... ;)

  2. Old Man Tomo has now become a star in our favorite mag, and I heard that his autographs may be available for the price of 1hrs flying, through the Clear Prop Shop. 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

Thanks for the compliment Planey...

  3. G'day mate! Yes it's an Aussie product, but you're very welcome all the same...! (the only difference between a Aussie and an American, is that you can tell who's the American in a party!!)

Can't help you much with the building side of things, but I hope you have a good time here and enjoy yourself.

    Have a good (white?) Christmas....

  4. Hello Fosie,

Nice to hear from you, and I'm glad you made it here, a great way to start a Career in aviation - and by that I mean getting to know 'other' aviation people.

Don't let being a girl worry you, and don't worry if people laugh at you... they'll go on doing that for a long time... it's a way of making 'them' feel better!

Doing a TIF (trial instructional flight) would be a very worth while thing to do sometime soon, (Christmas present?!). That way you'll be able to know if it really 'is' what you like, and it will also help a lot in deciphering what is what when reading theory books about it.

Hope you have a great Christmas!

  5. Hey Adam.... Awesome to hear from ya!

I think I must be in a similar boat as you! I gotta see what it is flying over head, you get pretty good after a while on guessing what it is too!

Corby Scarlets are a beaut lit'l aircraft, and I'd buy one straight away, but I kinda like two seats! Much more fun taking someone else flying as well... So I might get myself a Jab kit one day when I'm feeling rich and nothing to do... 031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif

BTW... am interested in how you tumbled across the site?

    Hope to catch ya sometime...

  6. D/H books are great!

    I've got/used -

Jim Davis's "PPL" book (very easy reading)

ATC books, (good information, but very tricky to follow)

Des Rycroft books, (very simply laid out, and good to get an idea on the basics, but probably not in depth enough for later on - focuses mainly on Low performance high drag aircraft)

And the Dyson Holland ones, (very well explained an easy enough to follow, also does include a very good amount compared to other RAA books)

Gomer: The pre-solo exam has a little bit made up by the CFI of your school, so could be a little different in some area's. (I'm pretty sure that is what happens anyway)

  7. Hey Darky!

Do you leave your arm resting on the arm rest while coming in to land??

Might sound like a silly question, but I just discovered that I was doing that the other day, and since then life has been a lot easier... Resting the arm on the rest, and holding the stick limits quick backward movement, so everything just isn't as nice as it could be...

Try holding the top of the stick (practice it on the ground!) and getting comfortable and full movements happening from centre to all the way back...

  8. And therin lies the basis for my question! Cheers Tomo  but the ones that are more likely to have changed - fuel, hatches/harnesses, controls etc. Does that sound right?

    No worrys Darky...

Sounds good, try and keep your scan for the checks the same each time - start at the same spot sort of thing - that way it eliminates missing something.

    Have fun!

  9. Runup checks and pre-take off checks are two similar but different things.

The runup you do once everytime the engine is started. (1800rpm, mags L/R, Carby heat etc...)

Pre-take off checks you do everytime before you take off (fuel, harness, latches, instruments/controls, engine in the green, flap, trim etc...)

    =====

    Major covers it beautifully above!

  10. Its a valid question, so don't kill yourself over it... ;)

I get what you mean, but try and think of the pre-take off checks as a 'life and death' (or a very good thing to do!), rather than a 'have to' just because that is what everyone does.... it is doing 'yourself' the favour, there is no 'legalness' against it, so your not going to get a fine or whatever if you don't... but it's much nicer knowing everything is good when blasting off into wind.

If you can get what 'I' mean?!

It's just like you check how much fuel you have in the aircraft before starting up, take off checks are the same.

I will do a run up every time I have switched the engine off... even if its just for a minute, I always will do a run up and check the mag's... some people think that is irrelevant because it was just running fine before... but from a mechanic's perspective I'd always do it!

  11. To cause irregular burning on either spark plug in the same pot certainly makes you wonder what I could be...

Have you checked you are doing the correct valve clearances? Valve clearances are a very important and must be done correctly, if not... When the engine heats up, things expand and the clearance can get closed up, and if it is to much the valves will start 'ridding' generating less compression due to not closing off sufficiently etc... will eventually burn out the valve.

Lower compression, less bang, less heat, will cause oil build up in the plug, slowly shorting them out etc etc...

If the spark wasn't as 'juicy' on those plugs/leads, it could do it also, as you already thought, but if you have new leads, and have checked the coil(s), also it'd be pretty hard to imagine both coils playing up on the same cylinder!

If you have one, or know someone with one, a thermo temperature gun is awesome for working out these sort of things - run the engine for 5 mins or so and then use this temp gun to check each cylinder exhaust port, generally as a rule they all should be relatively similar to each other... the hotter it is, the leaner - the colder it is, the richer...

Glazed bores will cause irregular compression problems... Is it just No 4 playing up?

Fuel type shouldn't be a problem if it is only the one cylinder playing up.

I don't think it is your electrical system or faulty plugs, I'm fairly convinced it'd be something to do with that cylinder, A leak down test when it is hot would be a good thing if possible.

Anyway I hope you find the problem...

Ps. This is only my opinion, and you should do as you feel is right or consult an aircraft mechanic...

  12. Sweet! another young'un... Welcome along Rory!

Awesome to hear about your solo flight, Have you done much more solo flying since?

I hope you'll find this place as great as I did, join in and have fun...!

I flew solo at 17 and also completed my Pilot cert and X-country at 17 (there is a bit of a story in the latest Raa Mag about it) Am 18 now and loving every bit of it...!

Keep it up mate, and I hope you get to fly as much as possible - don't forget to be safe as well!
