Mark- yeah just some menu ideas etc. there would be a bunch of stuff.

Danny - supercaps have certainly improved in recent years, and very recently capacity has gone up 4 to 8x. but that's still maybe only 8 houts instead of 2hours

Hard to go past a battery. just as long as the battery can be easily changed out !  IE slot in the front etc. there are a few large capacity primary lithium coin cells that have soldered tabs, 10 years worth for most gear memory.

The best solution for those designs is a magnetic memory-  It is very common these days- it is called FRAM.     FRAM is just what is reads FERROMAGNETIC. It can be written zillions of times and holds its memory essentially, forever.

That won't help us collectors 🤣

I think you'll find this interesting in regards to what was in MS head when they first designed the xbox. Not a long article, but explains why a battery is out of the question:

sure it was a cap ? didnt just look like a cap ?  super cap will only leak if over voltaged.

Yeah, it's a known problem with them. Some kinda gel? There was a number of years where the whole lot were crap. At the time, MS decided to run the clock with this cap instead of a battery. The chip that had the clock in it used a lot of power though so they used this super cap. Could still only hold the time for a few hours if unplugged.

Before installing it may be worth checking/replacing the internal memory battery in the AR3201 as there have been reports of failed batteries leaking and corroding the circuit board which proved costly

Thanks for the heads up. I also collect old games consoles and the original Xbox in particular has a similar problem, but with a super capacitor. I pulled mine apart and sure enough there was gunk everywhere! Pulled the cap and cleaned it up and it's all good again 🙂

Actually I'll replace it anyway. They tend not to last more than ten years max. Be a nuisance if it goes flat and I keep having to set up the frequencies...

  4. I concede I don't have much experience with navs but I figure I can go a long way with four frequencies preset. I kinda like that it is numbered 1-4. If I take off for cross country then I start with the local frequency on the A position. My plane can cover about 400 or so nautical miles. It's RA so no control zones. And it could be a long time before I even get to travel that far.

Sounds good. You can always upgrade later. Make sure you fit a good ground plane don’t rely on frame and best quality coax and antenna.

Yeah, I figured that since it has four spots to save frequencies once I am used to setting and saving them it won't be much different to the more modern type of radio. Position A is current frequency and then that can be saved into one of the four. I figure people have been flying successfully that way for decades, in way heavier airspace than I will be flying in! Right now I haven't even done any Navs so if this plane ever gets finished soon I aint goin anywhere far anyway 🤣

Have a look at the classifieds at www.seglflug.de. As Europe has abandoned 25kHz spacing there are many good radios coming out of gliders. I have installed 2 Becker 4201 at a cost of $3-400 each. They fit in a 21/4 hole.

Well I bIt the bullet. I went for the older AR3201 . doesn't have the two frequency 'toggle' feature like the 4201 but has 4 positions to store frequencies. That'll do me. Cheap as chips 🙂

Thanks again for the heads up!

  7. I'm building a Bushcat at the moment. It has taken a while and I can't compare to the Nynja. I'm hoping to check out a Nynja in a few months just to compare. Flying the Bushcat is pleasant and it does seem to soak up bumps. It's a bit heavier than the Nynja so maybe down to weight? One thing to consider is whether you want a taildragger or not. Not sure if the Nynja has that option?

Bushcat only comes with fuselage tank so that's another consideration. From what I'm reading here, people are getting a lot more use out of having a wing tank. We don't particularly want to carry much (if we ever get this thing flying 🤣  ) so in that regard if you don't need to carry much a fuselage tank SHOULD be easier to fuel than a wing tank.

Also, whichever version you buy, if you are building have a look at my blog to get an idea

  8. I still haven't done my navs so I'm interested for the nav training. I'm waiting until second hand X boxes that run this are cheap and I'll just use a joypad. Guy at work has it on PC and he is just using a keyboard! Needless to say he's not having fun. I told him he should just get a PS controller so that at least the 3 axis is proportional. Leave everything else on the keyboard.

Oh, since he knows I fly out of boonah, he's tried to fly a 747 out of there. I believe he wasn't successful...

That was the other thing I meant to ask. This 25khz spacing thing. Did I read somewhere that the spacing is changing in Australia? What should I be looking for to make sure it is appropriate for us?

Also, that link doesn't work. I assume you mean segelflug.de?

  10. Apologies if I got the wrong measurement. I'm inching ever so slowly towards getting a radio for my kit build. I was interested in the Trig 91 at one stage but found it has a head and base unit type construction where by you have a loom with a kajillion wires in it connection the two. I'm pretty sure I found some other brands that were just one unit because i remember making, and still have a cardboard mock-up to make sure it would fit behind the instrument panel

What brands/models fit what I'm after and are there any that are not great quality?

Danny that engine would probably make your replica heaps safer than the original; have a look at this historic photo of the intrepid man just before his historic crossing of the Channel.

To me, that is a look of sheer terror.

Hehe. Yeah it was a bit of luck that he was first. Blackburn was supposed to be the better.

Until they get the battery technology far better you wont see them in aircraft....not only the length of time available in the air is the issue but then its charging. If you fly out west you just cant plug it into a tree. You need a good base powersupply to be able to plug in your charger..the more capacity you require in your battery for time of flight then it totally depends on charge time..Charge time depends on how quickly the battery can accept the charge and of course you need a powersupply supply good enough to supply that rate of charge.

No good flying somewhere then have to overnight or spend 2 days to get enough charge in the battery to go the next part of your trip.

I think it will still be a long time before we see any improvement in this

Dont get me wrong...I would love to see electric powered aircraft but I still think I will be pushing up daiseys before it happens

You are right, but I doubt anyone is going to build any new IC designs now, since the serious money is from car manufacturers...

No. Goog Corp just don't want to pay for it.

I'm being wry. Google have done a deal with News Corp, hence I now call them Goog Corp. There was never anything to pay. You look something up, Google shows you the link to say a news corp story. You go to their site, and then you pay however it is News corp wanted you to pay. I think Google just figured it was easier to pay some protection money to us Aussie hicks than to try and argue the point.

In any case, since it doesn't look like any news corp affiliates reported the crash, it doesn't get a showing on Google. I predict for one web crawl cycle, which is normally a 30 day cycle. So it should appear on Google from anywhere between now and about 28 days from now.

We may have the recording of the news story, so I'll have a look tonight to see if I can see a rego.

  14. Don't know if the new amalgamation of Google/News Corp is reporting it yet (they weren't yesterday) but we happened to see on channel 7 news that a Tiger moth came down near amberley. Looked quite damaged, apparently engine failure and the moth hit a post landing in a paddock. Pilot and passenger unharmed.

We happened to be in boonah yesterday. We had hired a Tecnam to go for a pootle. Very surprised to see a whole bunch of aircraft there, maybe 30 or 40. Including maybe five Tiger moths! So I'm guessing this one was part of the fly in. Was painted in traditional airforce yellow.
