  1. Floats are OK to check float height do you measure the gap between the tang and the carby body ,the needle and seat are sealing ok pump on and holding the tang up the fuel flow stops and I can hear it diverting back to the tank via the reg. Ordered the gaskets last night at 5.30 and they turned up this morning ,no complaints about the service as l live 2hours north of Melb. Apparently permatex make a sealer unaffected by fuel unsure whether I should try that as well. I will let you know how I got on ,fingers crossed , getting sick of taking the cowls on and off.
  2. Checked and no leaks , refitted the bowl without the gasket and everything dry, can't figure out why it weeps with the gasket in place maybe vapours wicking through
  3. Thanks , I will refit the carby and try the pump test have removed the old gasket which fell apart , reading on other forums it seems to be a common problem , if the bowls are leaking engine runs lean on those cylinders resulting in rough running , apparently if both are leaking engine runs smoother but lacks power , I will check the data , the map gauge stops at 40 , when it passes 37 it starts to die . If I leave the bowl off and hold the float leaver up then turn the pump on would that should show if the needle and seat is leaking.
  4. Thanks for your help and have done everything you suggest, floats are ok but maybe the seat is leaking
  5. Tried linishing bowls using wet and dry on a glass table , it was out a bit , bolted every thing back up but it still weeps when I turn on the pump , I didn't think the fuel level in the bowls would be near the top , anyway ordered new gaskets, hope it fixes it
  6. Tried everything but I think it may be the right carby bowl leaking noticed fuel wet on the outside so l guess on full boost it may be loosing some air pressure which I guess would throw the engine way out of balance as those cylinders would be lacking some fuel , previous owner has overtighned the bowl ,apparently a common problem, now I have to figure how to fix it, maybe some sealer any ideas?
  7. 914 falters and drops 500 revs over 37 on the map gauge ease the throttle back and runs ok drained and replaced fuel no difference but I think it is fuel related, runs bad at 40 which is full boost , any ideas?
  8. Airborne home strip
  9. Airborne home strip Tongala
  10. Sorry for the confusion , only hold a Raa , had a bit of time to waste so dropped into the local strip and the way it was explained it all seemed pretty easy but you are probably right , may only apply to GA
  11. I knew about the endorsement but there was no mention about any exams it was more about being competent , navs , W&B, a bit of instrument training, but I may have missed something
  12. I guess this question has been asked before , anyway thinking of converting over to the rpl would that allow me to fly in controlled in a 24 rego providing I fit a transponder and does it require a certified radio and altimeter also does it require 100 hour services if so I probably won't go ahead
  13. I once had the fuel drain from one tank across to the other then out the breather on the cap because I parked it on the side of a hill I just landed on,drained the whole tank, wasn't on much of a lean either this was on a Savannah , but still warey of leaving the taps off
  14. We had it happen on a savannah and it ran back into the air box
  15. So does the diesel somehow get past the rings not being burnt during combustion
  16. There is a bigger opening underneath but reckon the heat would have to build up under the top part of the cowl with the heat rising Greg
  17. The oil cooler is fully exposed but I reckon there is a lot of heat build up inside the cowl ,hard to start after shutdown on a hot day which I think is fuel vapourering from the carbs . These aircraft come out of Europe and maybe don't suit our hot weather , the cowl only has a 15mm by 100mm vent at the back just in front of the screen Greg
  18. Oil cooler is fully open but I do block it when it's winter
  19. On climb out I have high oil temps on my 914 when the air temp is in the 30's , wondering if it would help if I enlarged the small vent on top of my cowl to let some of the heat escape , head temps seem OK but the oil is climbing out of the green also the pressure drops back , once up to high altitude and levels off in the cold air it improves slowly Greg
  20. no , no, I like the cold, so no
  21. Hi Kas If you decide to go to tas and looking for another plane to tag along , let me know, been to Devonport via King island ,also flown into Flinders for some fishing they were great trips. I am 10 mins from Shep so we should catch up Greg
  22. don't they have to be TSO'd
  23. Was helping a mechanic mate collect oil samples out of a articulated dump truck recently which were sent onto Caterpillar for analysis, wondering whether it would be prudent to do the same with my 914 ,which now has over 1300hrs, even though it has no mechanical issues.
  24. I could be wrong but I reckon the jet that does joy flights in Echuca had ejection seats, I think I overheard the pilots briefing passengers on procedures in case of emergencies
  25. I raced in the milledge series long time ago some of the riders I remember were Chapman bros , Norm Watts, Phil Lovett , all guns , way out of my league. We were just average clubman riders , looking back I reckon they were our best years. Flying is pretty good too , I noticed a lot of flyers were ex riders, must be in the blood.
