  1. I know that my experience with CASA may not mirror that of many on here, but I'm actually suitably impressed. I decided that I'd make use of the holidays over Christmas and make a start on doing my RAAus to RPL conversion. Only organising my medical in late November, I figured that it would be better to just get a RAMPC medical vs Class 2, given that the expected processing time would make it unlikely that I'd get it before CASA closed for the break. Armed with the wad of paper that the RAMPC is, I managed to book into the DAME and saw him 27 Nov, last thing on the Friday arvo. Now, the DAME was only interested in doing a full Class 2, as it is easier to process straight through his computer, so that is what we ended up doing. To my relief, the medical was mailed to me on 3rd Dec. I finished all of the required flying to convert to the 172, including a few flights to qualify for the CTA/CTR endorsements. With more paperwork in hand, I emailed the whole application to the licensing centre this Monday morning (18th), also posting the originals that same day. Well, to my surprise, the license was sitting in my mail box yesterday, with the covering letter dated 18 January. Same day processing! I know of another RPL application sent this week with similar turnaround. Maybe there are positive changes at CASA after all!

  5. I've had my setup running for about 2 weeks now. Pretty impressed with the range I'm getting from a homebrew antenna (roof mounted) with one of these dongles. I've managed to track a/c upto 236nm away
  6. Likewise, quick turnaround here as well!
  7. The AAIB report tells a bit more of the story http://www.aaib.gov.uk/cms_resources/DHC-8-402%20Dash%208%20G-JECJ%2008-14.pdf Factor in night landing, wind gusting to 48kt, in a crosswind and the hand releases from the yoke (not from him!) during the flare. I'd say he probably did alright to get away with just a bounce and heavy landing
  8. This had to happen just AFTER I relented and bought an ipad. Hate that hamstrung ios
  9. Whilst that particular one is British, it's also got Czech heritage, and ultimately was placed on the VH- register

  17. Ha! I wish. Not likely with the wages out there. Reality intervention means I'm happy with the XL
  18. This one (VH-GTE) was the original Blanik modified to Dafydd Llewllyn's specifications back in the early 80's. I spent many enjoyable hours in her while owned my our local club.
  19. As far as the mini goes, I can see that it probably will come down to the CASA rep on the day whether it is suitable or not. That is, unless it is written down unambiguously. The unfortunate thing is that I've finally given in to buying something with that little "i", only for the reason that the chance of OzR or AvPlan catering for android is so remotely miniscule. The mini would be my preference over the full size, but its a bit of a gamble at this stage.
  20. Not quite the way events unfolded. A motion was raised, but before voting, the chair stated that the oportinity to speak against that motion should exist if anyone wanted to. This occurred, and after that, the mover withdrew his motion voluntarily.
  21. The paddock that they came down into looks practically ideal for an emergency landing from the photos http://www.kathrynsreport.com/2012/11/cirrus-sr22-g3-turbo-gts-vh-wyh.html
  22. I don't really see the problem. In some ways it is actually easier to log on than the old system (unless you were backdooring the system in the first place). PC's or phone... haven't had any problems since the change.

Righto, the prop is a 68 inch 3-blade. On initial climb off the deck, we pull around 4900 rpm, and then increase to 5200 once airspeed climbs. Just had a look at the data from my flight back from Gawler the other week, and thanks to a little tailwind, I was up to 165kts over the ground at 17L/hr.
