  1. I think that would be a given, and wouldn't be considered "chatter or distractions"...

at any rate, its a great takeaway from this video I think, because I know I can be particularly prone to not remembering whether i have done something or not, and enforcing a sterile cockpit will be one thing I can do to help mitigate this. Checklists being the other, but I already do that pretty well.

what other lessons have we gotten out of this? What do we/you think he should have done regarding his recent loss, should he have gone up in the hopes it would be therapeutic, or should he have called it off till a future time. Keep in mind he didn't realise it was on his mind at the time or had been affecting him.

  2. wow... thanks for sharing that. Very sobering. So where DO we draw the line? some people would say the death of his mother should have grounded him, and others might say the flying could be therapeutic for him. I think my big takeaway on this one, besides the AMISAFE check is the idea of keeping it quiet in the cockpit on takeoff and landing, no distractions nor chatter with anyone other than the tower.

  3. question, before i watch this... should I watch before i go solo, or is it going to freak me out? I only ask because back in another lifetime i used to absorb as much of this sort of safety stuff as possible relating to motorcycles, and i did find that it got into my head sometimes bad enough to make me a nervous rider (even though I've been riding now 34+ years on and off)... just your thoughts...

  4. my understanding... yes, they both mean the same thing, and you would use 24Z when you want to mean "midnight tonight" and 00Z meaning "midnight tomorrow morning" - in other words, 24Z means this condition is good until the "end of today" (so not having to change dates). Otherwise, it would be something like "from 14th Feb 1300 - 15th Feb 0000" rather than just saying 14th Feb 1300 - 2400. Not sure how to code that, but i guess if i saw 24 i would keep the same date and 00 i would use tomorrow's?

  5. how about "most unusual"?

As a crew chief on the USAF EC-135 (heavily modified B707), I was privileged once or twice to be able to fly the boom - the telescoping refueling shaft that extends out the back and provides in-flight refueling capability to any plane so-equipped. It goes up and down and slightly left to right as well as in and out. Once roughly in place, there are small winglets on it and a joy stick in the rear to control it. i guess that would have been my first experience with controlling anything according to the laws of aerodynamics.

got to see some neat ones, including an SR-71... ahh those were the days (they didn't let me fly it on that one lol). I'll have to see if I still have any piccys and scan them in one day.

  6. Wouldn't a police report or standard coroner's report just state cause of death as impact trauma due to aircraft accident and leave it at that? i wouldn't think those reports would investigate to the level to help us understand root cause on the accidents themselves? I could be wrong, i have never seen one, but my impression was unless an aviation-related party investigates, that the info provided is mostly about what happened and when and to whom and the result at a pretty basic level? in other words, probalby nothing we wouldn't already know or have guessed.

  7. Hi Naremman,

thanks for the words of wisdom, yes "nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight"... Rain's been just part of the problem, and I am definitely happy to be on the ground wishing I were flying rather than the other way around.. most of it has been other stuff that I have aired out plenty on this forum already regarding instructors and other timing issues. I made the decision not to go last weekend based on the reports, although in hindsight, the weather was great and would have been fine.

its a bit like renting a limo and tux every week only to have the wedding postponed each weekend... plays hell with my ADD hehe :-)

And thanks even more so for what you guys provide! I am afraid though if I visit, you might have to switch to rice :)

  8. Thanks for the update John! I was just going to pipe in that my CFI told me this weekend that I always tend to fly (the Jab) with the right wing slightly down (though it looks level to me), and that I need to keep a bit of compensation on at all times to keep the wings level. Thought it might be something like that, but great to hear you got it sorted.

I've come to realise over my short life, that there are some people out there who like nothing more then to spoil it for others, just because they can. If there is a pseudo-believeable reason they can blame it on, all the better..

up here we call 'em wankers, and they need to get a job, and/or a life.

Disagree Hongie, It is more often about the almighty dollar. You buy the property cheap because it is near an airfield, then kick an scream about it until they close it down, now your property is worth double. Human nature is a disgraceful thing sometimes 013_thumb_down.gif.ec9b015e1f55d2c21de270e93cbe940b.gif

    Regards Bill

no, no... 'wankers' sums it up just about right...

  10. Eric mate all I can say is hang in there... i can TOTALLY relate, and it is very frustrating when you are at a place in your life where you finally have the time and money (and discipline) to dedicate to your dream, only to have the rug yanked out time and time again due to weather or instructor conflicts... for awhile I felt like it wasn't so much 20+ hours, as 1 hour 20+ times...

I am sure it gets better, but as I am in the same boat I guess we'll have to wait and see!

My nav to YWOL was supposed to have been last weekend too! Hopefully once summer is past things will calm down a bit weather-wise...
