Yeah the pre-solo one is mostly concerned with real basic stuff as shu said, right of way in the circuit, aerodrome markings etc. The Air Leg. one expands on that so you will see things like how much buffer to leave on airspace boundaries, VMC stuff, etc... i would say if you study for the Air Leg one, you'll nail the pre-solo one. PM me if you want I'll send you my study notes - I got a 95% on mine :)

What's that make the total now Ivan? Gotta be getting close to your test soon?

Great discussion, exactly the sort of input i was looking for! Very helpful, carry on!

Hi all,
Just got to thinking, as I am convinced I will never be able to afford my own aeroplane, the options available to me are either hire or purchase a share. So this got me to thinking, as one who has sat through the full 4-hour time share condo spiel in Mexico and ultimately rejected the idea.
The basis of the share was I pay whatever $$ up-front, then i have access to use the condo whenever I want. Which sounds great until I work out that a) I'd have to visit and occupy the room a helluva lot of times to make up the cost vs just renting a room and b) they seemed to be playing me on the idea that accomodation was as rare as hen's teeth, and best to have this available in case my holiday is spoiled due to lack of availability.
I have never found, with adequate planning, any shortage of great rooms at a reasonable price, so ultimately it wasn't for me. And it would also lock me into that destination for the foreseeable future if I wanted to see a benefit. Some people love it. Dunno.
Now - back to aeroplanes. Is there some facet of the share scenario which would make it beneficial vs. just hire? I can imagine it is nice to be one of a known number of people flying it, and all that but...
a) reduced rate? is the difference between the reduced rate and normal hire price enough? Still seems like you would have to go up a lot to recoup the cost of the share in hire rate difference.
b) if 5 people are sharing a plane, is it that much likelier to be free on a given day that I want it?
i am sure there are other considerations, but is this just under the surface a status thing? What else is there to consider? I can be swayed one way or the other, would like to hear from others who have either done it and love it, done it and hate it, or considered it and rejected the idea, or are still considering.
should this be a poll?

Well - practice test done and dusted, and that was a turnup for the books.... all the stuff I stressed over ie the training area stuff, I more or less nailed. The stuff I didn't give any thought to, ie the circuit work, I choked HARD. I honestly thought at this point I had circuits down well enough, but alot of things combined to throw me off and I got flustered and never recovered... kept crowding myself, everything was all over the place - honestly I think i flew better on my first lesson!
So yeah, now i've been busted down to "remedial circuits" before I can take my test. But good to know that I have the other stuff down better than I thought, and I know what I need to work on. Really need to learn not to rush things, and to be more methodical under pressure.

haha or as I always tell my Mum, if you don't hear about it on the news, it went well!
-
Haha, good one guys... probably not too far from reality I guess. Mine goes along the lines of acknowledging that there has been a failure, reassuring the PAX that the aircraft is designed to glide perfectly well without it and that I have been trained in these situations, and a quick instruction to remove any sharp objects, glasses, loose items and be ready to vacate the a/c immediately after landing and shutdown. I'll have a think about a way to put that into a mnemonic as it really is a separate train of thought from the thoughts related to performing the actions. Guess that's a Human Factor.

Practice test on Sunday, feeling pretty well prepared. Think my steep turns might be a bit rusty, but hoping it all comes back to me. I'm like Eric, i have a hard time vocalising the checklists, seems to divert a disproportionate amount of processing power to make my lips move when i am trying to concentrate on the PFL's haha! Especially the passenger brief, that in particular seems to jar the train off the rails.
wish me luck, real thing next!!

Haha, yes 4 of those on a 737 airframe - the kind of power Singer could only dream of!Jab engines?

Yeah, I get that daz, just having a bit of fun... last nites was horrible, all because they forgot the cabin pressure switch....
sorry Motz, back to the thread!
-
I would love to do that, I'll put that on the list for shortly after I finish up my ticket!
Beginning to be leery of 737's, even though I have traveled extensively on them and others all my life... the seem rather well represented on Air Crash Investigations....
are weekends an option for you Motz?

Yeah much of this looks a bit past my personal limit at the moment, though that's gotten a lot better with the time down at YWOL. Loads of fun by the looks of it, cool to see little competitions like this too, something I'd hope to participate in one day

some of those make me feel alot better about my crosswind landings and takeoffs

Petty Functionaries With Clipboards....
sounds like a good band name, no??

Cool, good to know Ivan. I have my flight test and all my navs prebooked, so weather and $ permitting, should be done with this phase before July! The way you are going, you might do it even quicker!
i also plan to go out to the Oaks and do my tailwheel endo there, but that will need to wait for now, I'm focused!

I think the fact it comes from a representative of CASA means it will serve the purpose requested. If the question had been 'can you send me something that will serve in court' there probably would have been a great deal more wording and possibly a sign off from their legal team to be labelled "official"... As far as x'ing out all the names, I thought about it, but as that appears to be Kym's role within the government organisation we all own, what purpose would it serve? She's there to field questions, my mate is not, so that's why i x'd out his name :)You probably should have x'ed out all of the names!Apart from that, the fact that is says 'UNOFFICIAL' probably means it wouldn't stand up in court.-

Hi Xxxx,
I have been asked to respond to your enquiry regarding the IPad Mini.
For a private flight you can use the IPad Mini as your primary source of document. As you are aware, you do not require any back-up of your electronic documents, however should the tablet fail or battery go flat you are in breach of the regulations and of course the safety implications of this.
The current regulations, and recommendations of CAAP 233-1 apply to commercial operations.
Should you have any further question please contact me,
Kind regards,
Kym

Oh how do you like that little Alpha? How does it compare to the Jab, pretty easy to swap between? Thinking I will go get checked out on that once I get my ticket so I will have some other choices.

Flight Sim X is a good way to at least keep having the right thoughts at the right time while you go thru a practice flight, its amazing how it helps if you really treat it like a lesson, ie make the radio calls out loud, think about the wind and the BUMFISH checks, etc... gotten me through a couple long spells between lessons.
Good luck on the wedding AND the marriage!

that's right... "Don't HASELL me man, i'm trying to concentrate here!" got it... Thanks!Don' t forget you HASELL checks before you demonstrate your stall recovery, that could get embarrassing. If you do forget, blame nerves.

If I get a piece of paper in lieu of the card, first thing i will do is laminate that sucker! The little laminator in the office supply section at Woolies works a treat.

Thanks guys, all on board and I think I'm ready to go! I made quite a cool little checklist too. Some really good points here, reminds me of similar frame of mind you need for performing on stage or at an open mic.. .remember, they WANT you to do well or they wouldn't have turned up. Great to hear from you Eric as well, as I know you have just gone through this recently so would still be fresh in your mind... have you done much flying? any new write-ups or a blog planned? It was great reading about your journey, made a big difference on mine!
