Speculation: Riding a motorcycle at speed, on a twisting road, was exhilarating in my late teens & twenties. I do not recall needing to judged speed, acceleration, gear selection & engine rpm via anything other than by sound, the effect of wind on body, my semicircular canals and visual perception. Pilots all know that flying is a very diffrent challenge - the visual, auditory and inner ear, we rely on for ground based clues, can be absent and or easily be deceived. BUT A very slow aircraft & with an open cockpit, does have sound (wind in the face/rigging, engine speeding in a descent, slowing in a climb) similar to a motorcycle and if not too high, there will be some visual clues as to speed and the aircrafts relationship to the terrain. Bit higher and you should be able to judge the wings relationship to the horizon. The "seat of your pants" sensations, will tell you if you are descending (lightness) /climbing (heavy). I have only had one brief experince of such - It was quit fun but not so much that I wanted to do it again, although an offer of a free go might persuade me.😈 .

From the photo's, it looks like the aircraft impacted with little forward motion - "pancaked" in - a stall fairly close to the ground?😈

Tell the truth, a Drifter can't climb to the fabled 1 mile high 😈

"I think it’s important to make sure your finances are in order before commencing." 100% Agree - Flying is far from cheap, so do do your budget/cash flow(out) "I’ve seen too many unfinished projects and too many dropouts before finishing flying lessons and that is a waste of time and money." Dont agree. Many aspiring pilots reach a point in training (often when they solo) and feel they have satisfied the "itch" - thats okay (keeps the schools viable). Unfinished projects can be passed on. My Sonex Legacy is one of those. The real tragedy is when the builder can't bring themselves to pass on the project - this happens sometimes to the point where the beneficiary of the Will have a "fire" sale of the departed's assets. All to often the "project" is overvalued by the non flying relative but in the end goes to someone who will further the build (or the tip). The above happens to completed aircraft as well - The Oaks has at least 7-8 aircraft gathering dust and another one or two, that seem to be heading that way.😈

    Transponder has tested AOK!! 😈

".....had one hand holding that shut and the other working the throttle and stick........nearly crapped myself when the door opened, sudden loud noise and the plane yawed left." Sounds to me like an incident ie nothing ".....a bit silly" about it at all. 😈

Hi Dann_G, For what its worth- Dont mess with CO. Those "....crap co sticker things" are just as you, so colourfully, describe, always have been. Get yourself a proper detector. RAA was offering & this Forum have them and if all else fails Bunnings Aerospace. This Forum is offering C02 detectors x 2 & one CO. Just in case the CO2's are actually that, don't purchase them . Personally I like the detectors that, not only alarm at above safe concentration, but also give you a Max ppm detected. I think it likly, that at certain stages, after engine start, there can be greater chance of CO entertaining the cockpit eg engine start & warm up, with aircraft facing out of wind. 😈

Getting a bit silly. We are not talking a high speed aircraft here. BrendAns post".....but just as i turned final my door blew open so i had one hand holding that shut and the other working the throttle and stick. did one of my best landings funnily enough. nearly crapped myself when the door opened, sudden loud noise and the plane yawed left. " Seems to me you didnt read BrendAn's post - Repeated above for those who didnt read or miss read. He may have been gilding the lily a bit, to make his challenge a tad more exciting, than it actually was, however, I took him at his word. Sounds distinctly unpleasant and if accurate (??) his heart rate would likly have been significantly elevated. If such a ho hum every day occurrences, I am sure BrendAn would not have reported it. Fact is fact - Gullwing doors, do not confer the same inherent safety benefits of a front hing door. Do I need to explain further? I repeat "...suicide LIKE.." - Emphasised for the scholars of the english language, who clearly missed the "...like" Happy to elaborate further, should anyone require.😈

Its not a "problem" . Being a form over function creature (for the most part) I can live with it, for the price & as is. I was just providing a review. for any future purchasers (no need for sunrises / disappointment. Being forewarned you may like to make up a snice soft gasket (to take up the imperfections) & paint it in the colour of your choice, before going out to the airfield to fit it.😈

UPDATE: The home made unit worked well. New Red Tail Transponder Antenna, Delta Pop, unit installed - yet to test (contact Sydney Control when next airborne). Supplied by Aircraft Spruce ($164.73 + delivery). The price is very good compared with most of the other similar lookin blade types (go to well over $1k). What I have found so far; Not sure if the glossy looking promo picture is actually a Red Tail (mine is matt) Its a printed blade. The surface is quite rough & holds the dirt to a small degree. The above aesthetics aside - The base/fuselage of the antenna surface is far from flat/level. I have had to use silicon gasket goo to fill the gaps. The mounting studs have supplied lock nuts but no washers. It never occured to me to that the antenna aerodynamic casing (the blade) could be printed - if I have another wombat attack or similar, I will simply get my son (who has a printer) make me a new one.😈

    How so?😈

You can't have it every way. Either the doors, should they open in flight, stay closed due to slip stream/air pressure or they don't. As stated , your gullwings are "suicide like" in this context . As suggested, your doors are a design failure. It may be that a redesign is somehow not feasible - This does not change the fact, just demonstrates that a rsky compromise has been accomodated. I rest my case😈

Do your reserch. Decide what your flying gaol(s) is/are. Have sound logical reasons - ditch the sentiment but try & hold on to the passion.. No matter what rout you take it will cost a lot time & dosh. Then & only then, decide what flight training rout will be best for you. No matter what you choose, it will test your resolve and pocket. Everyone on this Forum has had a diffrent experince. They (including me) are not unbiased. We all mean well but in the end it is you alone who must weigh up the factors to suit your circumstances & gaols. 😈

So was I - its your aircraft that has something like suicide (gullwing) doors 😈

Jesus! Whats happening with this web site ? - just lost a second posting.😈

Me thinks there is a design lesson to be learned. "Subside" (forward openening) doors are (almost) a car feature of the distant past, for very similar reasons.😈

Why does the Jab's exhaust system require so much repair/welding??😈
  19. skippydiesel
Had the door on a C172 open in flight - no big deal - did a standard circuit - landed - relatched door - took off again - all good!😈

Hi Baz, I just tried to get into the RAA web site to see if they list RAA training establishments in the Canberra area - unfortunately there seem to be a problem with the web site, it wouldn't accept my log in. RAA flight training is likly to be your most cost effective . The training follows the same content as GA (with the exception of entry to controlled airspace - soon to be included) I doubt Canberra airport will have an RAA flight school (but you never know) - someone, on the forum, in the Canberra area would know for sure. 😈
  21. skippydiesel
    So? 😈
  22. skippydiesel
Hi BrendAn, Are the exhaust springs standard Jab - they look quite light weight? The location/angle of some of the exhaust springs, does not look to be optimal? What is function of the hose clamp on one muffler flange? 😈
  23. skippydiesel
I agree - A call to the ARO is highly desirable, if there is any doubt about airfield condition, however landing fees should already be known ie published in ERSA😈
  24. skippydiesel
May just be the photo but those exhaust springs dont look heavy duty enough or at the best angle/position, to keep the pipe in the muffler. Whats the hose clamp for? 😈
  25. skippydiesel
Yes however the exorbitant fees quoted, are not what my concern (at this time), its the failure to publish the fess in ERSA (staying on track)😈
