Sure experiment with a new airframe design or motor, but only do one at a time. Sure you can be bold but few bold builders live to be old pilots. Pilots who fly new designs with new engines are called test pilots. And deserve the title if good enough, if not they are called the deceased more often than not.

If you want cheap, cheerful and reliable then do a Heath parasol or similar design and add a total two stroke. Shop around and $2,500 for a good rotax with redrive will provide plenty of thrust in which to trust. It's all about condition and managing your two stroke. The Texas parasol group is great and is very cheap to build, lots flying and not a huge amount of build hours. as it is built from angle alloy it is cheap. A tube frame in alloy of aircraft grade costs considerably more. The covering is up to you but can be cheap or very expensive eg. Oratex. The more you can do and make yourself the cheaper, go second hand when possible and enjoy. A used rotax or Kawasaki or Hirth two stroke will be fine and more reliable than a home cobbled motor/ box combo. Resist the temptation of a untried motor and untried airframe, too much to go wrong and you only have one life.

It would be a better deal with a Jabiru motor, then it is much more affordable. No redrive but light, and cheap.

As a side note the big Zeppelin fire was caused by the nitrate dope which is extremely flammable. Yes so is hydrogen but that flashes off, the nitrate made it a fireball waiting to happen. This is from a good documentary on the disaster.

Lets not also forget the Jabiru has over 3000 aircraft flying and many were kit built. Besides the conservative thing, the metal kits suit the flat pack cargo cult of America. No comparison to Cessna is relevant at all, inferiors products at huge expense and are only GA.

I think you should look at all those Jabiru's treated like a work tool and always out and about. Lots have spent a lot of their 15-20 years out in the beautiful Sunshine's rays. Are frosted on, shat on by birds, peed on by work dogs, and hailed on sometimes. And a clean of the screen, plus washing off of large bird or flying fox poo, preflight is all that's needed. They are one tough bird and always weapon of choice for crash ability. You have to really try to kill yourself in one. And that is proven worldwide. With the exception of the wonderful locally built Ferris wheel fighter, A tin plane is far less forgiving of crashes unless really special, like another Aussie the Hornet. A metal aircraft can be a write off from just a hail storm, and it sure hates bird poo.

As a aside from dumb colours and cooling costs I was in the previous century, a chimney sweep in the blue mountains and all the post war houses had the fireplace/slow combustion on the perimeter wall. Absolutely stupid, a massive heat loss, lots more wood used and the bedrooms would be cold. Also a huge fire risk if not properly cleaned, which given a tall chimney or pipe at the edge of the building rather than on the ridge, meant most were never properly cleaned. And it was bloody dangerous for me the sweep. Brainless bloody builders and developers.

It is a hard one with the truck. The driver is a complete idiot, but the truck seemed to bash the horn rather than emergency brake. I would fine both if it was me. The driver of the car should get negligent driving charge. You do not have the right to brake anywhere you like in the traffic- unless it is a emergency. You must take care that your actions do not endanger others- even if you are in front. Just like it you have no right to go into a intersection when the light is green- you must do so safely and only when it is safe to do so. The vehicle in front does not have carte blanche to do anything they like, nor can they just decide to brake and stop in a lane unless it is for emergency reasons or because the traffic ahead has stopped. Just like you can't just decide to enter a intersection and then stop and read a map etc. If it went to court esp. if someone is injured and compensation was sought, then I would expect both drivers would be found to have contributed to the accident. Some states may see it different but that is the general principle. As far as multiple rear end crashes- in NSW the last car to hit only pays for the car they hit and so on down the line. I know because this happened to me 20yrs ago. The police that arrived were fortunately- the accident investigation team, lucky us. The fool at front slammed on the brakes on a major road for no reason and we all barreled in. The cop stated that as no one was injured and cars were movable (to a side st) she would not charge anyone. But the first driver- the idiot, wanted everyone fined- the nice officer obliged. The idiot was charged with negligent driving - they had no lawful reason to emergency brake, and by the very nature of it been a arterial road, the whole road is a NO stopping zone. Just like you can't park your car on a freeway lane and have a picnic. A similar situation is when swerving to avoid wildlife, if you cause a accident- you are at fault. You can not drive in a manner that endangers others- no matter what signs, lights, wildlife etc. I agree though that many cops have very little law knowledge and just rely on us copping it. Or they pick the easiest target and don't want to get involved.
