  1. The 6 candidates for the 3 positions have been announced (sitting members in bold): Trevor Bange Eugene Reid Barry Windle Kirk Sutton Alex van der End Tapan Dave Election statements are on the RAA website, log in as a member first. Voting opens today and closes 27th Sept. Best wishes to all 6. Kirk already has a presence on the Forum. Does anyone know Alex & Tapan, or comment on the others' views on issues such as governance, weight increase, support for rag & tube, CTA, member engagement etc, etc.
  2. This is set by Legislation - CAO 95-10 https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2017C01129 Unfortunately this isn't something RAA can change, the best Kirk can promise is to add his voice to the RAA Board requesting that CASA and our legislators amend 95-10, and the public lobby the Minister to that end. CASA is moving away from Exemptions. The Weight increase is coming from CASA, RAA have no legislative power to change it, only to accept or reject CASA's offer. CASA offered an increase to 750kg back in 1994, but the Board of the day said "we're too busy just now." Let's see what Part 149 brings. Kirk may be able to discuss this with more professional knowledge. It is refreshing to have a candidate on the Forum.
  3. Let me clarify this - RAAus is a Not-For-Profit, which doesn't mean "cheap". It means their "profits" don't go to shareholders / members / Directors / owners. There's nothing to stop you owning, building or flying a cheap aircraft with RAAus, but people don't want them - our experience of trying to sell 95-10's under $5k is that no one wants them, even if they are registered and flying. Reasons? People don't want to put the time into maintaining them, pilots are too heavy for the MTOW, don't trust a 2 stroke, want 2 seats etc, etc. I welcome any ideas to reverse that trend. A weight increase that brings the lower end of GA into RAAus will bring some older Cessna, Piper 2 seaters that are way cheaper than a Jab. The alternative is relying on imported factory built, or kits. Unfortunately we now live in a society that wants everything NOW and not willing to design, build, maintain. Kasper - thanks for taking the time to engage with the Forum. Best wishes for the election.
  4. Please, Please bring back NES! But perhaps we should start anew? The old NES was longer than a TurboPainer treatise on Public Liability and just marginally shorter than FlyCyclone's ignore list! There's new Jabs to bash, Savs to batter, Part 61 to 149 to lampoon and new users to pick on. Manual quizzed the NES - "How To Fly?" "Fry?" replied the Bex Special search engine. "To fry first take ... The next poster finishes the sentence and starts a new one ... You get the idea?
  5. Love the colour picker (the brush on the side menu). I have already experimented with toning down the bold blue to a pastel shade which makes the site easier on my eyes, and also gives me an option to change to the colour to suit the seasons. Thanking you Ian & Ahmed
  6. The Pulsar is slippery and not recommended for a novice. In Mr FV's opinion, it's rudder is too small. We have been working on one for a friend who needs to sell it as he can no longer fly. His Pulsar is good looking, goes like the clappers, has one of the best Rotax 912's (in Mr FV's opinion) that he has seen, but needs an experienced pair of hands (and feet! It's a tail dragger). Presently working on the wing tank where fuel was allowed to dry out - been out of service for years. It is a challenge for an old guy to get in/out of it, canopy a bit low for some tall guys, very little baggage space, but looks the goods. Based in Qld. I had it listed here years ago in the Classifieds, but can't find it now.
  7. I liked Ahmed's Zenforo. I prefer the lighter themes; Ortem, Elegant. I would like to avoid black backgrounds, bold, busy themes & semi transparent. I want to easily read the forum message. On forum posts, I prefer to see the OP, rather than just the last poster, and some indication that I contributed to the discussion (so I can follow-up). I like the idea of the user changing the colour - or is that set by the Site?
  8. Under the Constitution Eugene is required to stand down. He is allowed to re-nominate and, if he gets enough votes, can serve on the Board for another 3 years. Michael Monke was elected, with a large majority, in 2017, for a 3 year term.
  9. Isis Flying Club Inc had to increase their PL from $10mil to $20mil when the Council renewed the lease (for 20 years). It is becoming pretty common.
  10. I have started a thread for the RAA Election 2019 - so this thread can get back to talking about Avdata & landing fees.
  11. RAAus is calling for nominations to fill 3 Board positions. Nominations open 3 June 2019 and close 5 July 2019, 5:00pm EST. The RAA Board consists of 7 members, with fixed, but staggered, terms; which means only a few have to stand down at each election, but are eligible for re-election for a 3 year term. The Current Board: **Those standing down (as far as I know - please correct me if I am wrong) Michael Monck (Chairman) 0419 244 794 [email protected] (Elected 2017) Rod Birrell 0422 446 622 [email protected] (Elected 2018) Luke Bayly 0421 463 967 [email protected] (Elected 2018) Barry Windle (Replaced Tony King on retirement 2019 from 2018 election result) **Alan Middleton 0407 356 948 [email protected] **Trevor Bange 0429 378 370 [email protected] **Eugene Reid 0428 824 700 [email protected] Nomination information is in the Members Portal on the RAAus website. Being a member is the only qualification. Candidates are required to submit a photo and an election statement up to 750 words, to be published in the magazine. At the "travelling around and meeting the members" gig that I attended this year, they were talking about wanting the Board to be more representative of the membership. They felt it lacked younger people, women, pilots with experience in weight-shift, gyro, 95-10, rag & tube, builders. But if you have the time and energy - NOMINATE!
  12. I am listing this on behalf of Warren Butler's widow. Iiona wishes to sell Hangar No.9 situated at the Childers Qld airstrip. The hangar is one of the newer hangars. It is the closest to the airstrip, opens facing the strip (no worries with taxi or turning, can't be built out). It is zincalume, lockable, concrete slab and apron, large rainwater tank, pump, lights, power connected. It used to house a Sav, then Warren's Lightwing (sold). It is Council approved. The hangar is on the Isis Flying Club Inc's lease. Owners must first become a member of the Club ($70/pa). The annual hangar owner's fee is $200/pa. There is a one-off fee of $500 to be paid by the buyer to the Club on the transfer of a hangar. The new owner must also agree to abide by the Club/Council lease conditions (no Commercial business, for aviation storage only, no residing etc) and the Club rules. The Club is a friendly group that meet on the first Saturday of every month (except January) at 10am in the Club house at the airfield. Club members are expected to put some sweat equity into the airfield - it is mowed and maintained by Club members. Childers is a grass strip about 3.5hrs drive from Brisbane. If you are interested contact Iiona Mcleod ph/text 0478 607 797. $35k ono. Some equipment also available. Sorry I don't have a better picture - will get one soon. Enquiries regarding the Club & Childers airstrip - PM me; the hangar contact Iiona.

  13. I think the option of using both will work best. I am prepared to keep my Club up to date, however many may not. In that case a link to their existing Web or Facebook page may suffice. Our Club gave up on our website as it was too hard to keep it up to date. Does the events in Clubs link to the Events Calendar? Sue
  14. Bob Bramley is now in Bendigo, heading to Tyabb Vic, expecting to be home in Davenport Tassie 11am Wednesday. Seems to have not hit a snag anywhere. After Tyabb, he has 5 stops around Tasmania.
  15. 3. "Lucky to Escape" was what the MEDIA said. The CEO is pointing out that it was more than luck. Training & skill comes into it.
  16. The error message still persists ... it looks exactly like BirdDog's in #67. I un-ticked one, then two of the first email options in Preferences and get the same message regardless when I hit Save. Win 10, Firefox latest, MS Surface Pro 3.
  17. Bob Bramley is over half way - left Tassie, Vic, NSW, Qld, NT behind - now heading for Port Headland WA. Not sure what is going on (weather?) as after Darwin he has been flying in the afternoon rather than early morning in the Eastern States. Has been making good time. Had a day off in Darwin, but foot to the floor for the rest of it. Unfortunately he won't be breaking the record as someone got in before him in Sept 2018. Not entirely sure what the issue was, but has something to do with supported and unsupported. He was claiming the youngest unsupported - so perhaps this is immaterial and it is simply the youngest (regardless). Had he left in January he would have claimed the record. But, as I have said before, Good on him for making that decision in the face of adverse weather (and insufficient funding) and not been caught up in Push-on-Itis. Sue
  18. Tried to unsubscribe to email alerts (Profile - Preferences - Save) and got "Oops we have a problem ... Please enter a valid value. "
  19. Follow him on Facebook www.facebook.com/SurvivingTurbulence/ Or his website www.survivingturbulence.com Follow his progress on https://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0cd6q9VzTbrnWgofcI7Zfvgka1IlRftq0 He departed this morning, landed at Flinders Is, now about to land at Lakes Entrance Vic.
  20. If you aim to be the youngest, you have to aim for the closest date to your birthday, or you risk leaving a window of opportunity for someone marginally younger to take your record. If you are at school, you aim for school holidays. The compulsion to go ASAP could over-ride good decision making; so I applaud his decision to delay. Good on him for having a go.
  21. I have had no problems with Avdata. Someone was using my call sign, regularly commuting into Archerfield Mon-Fri, I simply replied that my aircraft had not left Longreach and the charges were reversed. A Commercial pilot "borrowed" my fuel card and used my call sign - I was charged for landing fees and en-route charges - the refueller noted the VH on the plane as it was different to the card, so I sent that as proof and that my C150 didn't do that amount of knots for Airservices - both reversed without any further ado. An acquaintance regularly flew into a busy airfield for fuel using someone else's call sign. Avdata reversed the charges and the airport staff identified the plane and then him, and banned him from visiting without prior permission. Over the years I have had people use my call sign at Longreach as they knew I had paid the annual fee. I don't know what transpired there, but I suspect they got rounded up in the end and their bums polished. I have had an aircraft on the VH register for over 20 years. The list is publicly available; you can download it, with my full name, addresses, etc. 20 years ago I used to get mail advertising things, but I hardly get anything generated by that list now. I guess Facebook etc give away far more detail on far more people.
  22. There's no landing fees at the Childers Qld airstrip, but it costs Council $5,000 per year to maintain and only a few hangar owners are local residents contributing rates to that Regional Council. It used to cost $15,000 per year and Council were talking about demolishing the old toilet block (it cost about $5,000 to clean) so the Club took over the cleaning and provisioning, the mowing, spraying and maintaining of Council land. In return the Council only charges $55/pa for the lease the hangars sit on. But it still costs them $5,000 for wind socks, cones; major grading, drainage, access road, toilet painting, pump & cistern replacements, crusher dust, earthworks, survey etc. The Club puts in many hours of volunteer labour and about $1,700 in insurance, $2,500 in fuel, mower repairs & depreciation, toilet supplies, tea, coffee & milk etc so that other aviators can enjoy the strip and amenities for free. Visitors are welcome to give the Club a donation. Membership was increased to $70 to cover increasing costs in this area, but few begrudged the need to do so. I believe this model could be proposed to Council's struggling to justify the costs of maintaining small airstrips.
  23. Canberra Aeronautical Club member hospitalised after NSW plane crash https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-23/man-hospitalised-after-small-plane-crashes-into-tree-in-nsw/10843668 The plane was privately owned, but the Canberra Aeronautical Club has since confirmed one of its members was flying. It is believed downwinds pushed the aircraft into the tree line shortly after take-off, causing it to clip the trees and crash. A spokesman from NSW Police, which is investigating the incident, said the man was the only person in the plane at the time of the incident.
  24. Adelaide pilot leaves 'I'm bored' message and graffiti on flight radar https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-20/bored-adelaide-pilot-leaves-message-on-flight-radar/10829262 An Adelaide pilot has taken workplace venting to new heights by etching "I'm bored" into the sky. The Diamond Star plane, operated by Flight Training Adelaide, spent a little over three hours in the air on Tuesday to draw the letters over South Australia. The message was not seen by people on the ground, but was visible to aviation followers watching live flight tracking programs and websites. It is believed the pilot, who was working out of Parafield Airport, north of Adelaide, was "running in" a new engine. The "bored" artist is not the only pilot creating messages or artwork, according to the Flightradar24 website. Throughout the world pilots are drawing planes, love hearts, leaving messages and even signing their own work on return flights.

  25. He can't be voted out by the other Directors. The Constitution says: 38.4 The Directors cannot remove a Director or auditor. Directors and auditors may only be removed by a Members’ resolution at a general meeting. Tony has resigned. There are only two scenarios (a) he has resigned voluntarily, or (f) he has resigned by informing the Board he is no longer eligible under the Act. People resign for a number of reasons; pressures of work, family commitments, health. Whatever, lets hear it from a reliable source. He's been an active Board member for a number of years, so I doubt it is the Board as he's weathered stormier seas than this present one. Someone who knows him may be able to shed some light.
