I have a Northstar Mizer Fuel Flow Meter in my Jab 230 and it has been very useful.  The calibration was checked and found very accurate, especially when compared to the poor Jabiru wing root and dash board indications.  Unfortunately, the screen of the fuel flow meter is becoming hard to read.  Not sure whether it is the LCD or back light that is fading, but the Northstar Mizer Fuel Flow Meter seems to be out of production.

Are there any recommendations for a stand alone Fuel Flow Meter?

Most of my friends have had good experiences with the JPI.

I have an FC-10 flight computer that does fuel flow, if you have a GPS connected it can predict distance on current fuel. This is of course dependent on you adding the fuel to the unit when you fill up. I just use it for instantanious useage at the moment, so climb and cruise fuel use.

It came in the plane, has the FT-60 installed for for the flow meter.

Fuel flow Meters and fuel used information is VERY handy. Calculate endurance remaining in Minutes when convenient. Always have that in the back of your Mind.  REDUCE by the reserve if you work that way.. Fuel gauges are often all over the Place in some  set ups.. Nev

I've had a few goes at entering W&B into OzRunways. I'm obviously doing something wrong because my fuel weight/arm is right outside the graph. Does OzRunways do a good job of calculating fuel use?

I have a Czechoslovakian friend flying in tomorrow so I've asked him to have a go at setting it up.

I find it to be very accurate. Double check the instructions and you should be fine.

the display

maybe. It's an LCD isnt it ?

whether it is interchangable with other displays depends on whether they're using some custom display directly to the CPU, or a generic daya connection.

send me picture of the front of the faded display, and also the insides of it

LCDs life can reduce with high heat.

Thanks for the offer Glen and all the comments.

I got my Northstar Mizer Fuel Flow Meter out on the bench and now it is working fine with the readout nice and clear, doh! LCDs don't self repair so I am a bit puzzled, the connections all looked good.  So I'll put it back in and see where it goes.

My Garmin 296 screen went very feint so I replaced it with an Aera 660. Then found a 296 replacement LCD screen for $40.  You have got to try it at that price; the new LCD worked wonders just like a new one.  However, 6 months later stored in an airconditioned room it is now virtually unreadable with a very yellow display.

I have not had much luck with LCDs.  I had a Dynon 10a and the screen went bubbly (the poloriser layer I thought).  Onto the bench to explore the poloriser.  Peeling off sections of the bubbly film and viewing through another new polariser film confirmed the problem.  However, before I got any further the 10a died and as I had already got a replacement, it was abandoned.

My vibration analyser/data collectors all have LCD screens and one after another their screens have faded out.  Replacements are available, but only if you buy batched of 200!

Alan, on the bench did you change the orientation of the meter, compared to the orientation in the airplane ? like flat on its back on the bench ?

and also to consider-

if it lost contrast, could be one of the contrast power supply capacitors on the board, not the LCD
