Having just completed my instructor rating, and spending the last 2 days doing long navs over unfamiliar territory, i ask the question about using VOR and NDBs in recreational aircraft, to aid navigation obviously, this is when i found out the the VOR and NDB system will slowly be phased out, as each transmitter becomes unserviceable, they will not be replaced, but their published approaches will be replaced with GPS precision approaches.
now it seams to me that GPS will soon become a primary navaid in the GA world, .... shouldn't navigation by GPS be tough in nav training? and not to be used as "backup" only??
the main reason i begun to question this, is a new technam arrived at Nerrandera over the 2 weeks i was there without a compass!

just a quick note, apparently in the not to distant future, VOR and NDB,s in OZ will be decommissioned, leaving only GPS as the Primary source of non map navigation.... shouldn't navigation by GPS be tough in nav training? and not to be used as "backup" only??

i think the price will continue to drop on Jabs, as production is almost matching demand, there is no more 12 month wait from placing an order..
just the other day, Wally and myself took the J230 up to try to explore its stall envelope, even at 45 deg angle of bank, with 15 deg flap, it would still not drop a wing!! GRRr.. the technam on the other hand!:ah_oh:
now theres an option over the Jab230 if you have a short strip.. full flap over the fence at 50kts in the technam and you can pull it up real quick.. take off is similar using a short field technique.

have a look at a documentary called The great global warming swindle. the original founder of greenpeace is involved with it..
personally, i dont disagree with the global warming theory, the climate is Constantly changing, has been since the dawn of time, and will continue to change. weather we are the direct cause of this, i dont think we are..
the climate has been significantly warmer in the past that it is now, but even high school physics doesnt agree with most stuff, CO2, is a heavy gas! and sinks quite rapidly to the ground, not only that, it only makes up 0.01% of the atmosphere, Water vapour is the biggest contributor to the greanhouse effect, and makes up a significant proportion of the atmospheric make up.
i dont believe a carbon tax will change anything, except make a few people rich, and i see it as the worlds first Global tax.
though i am all for clean air technology, and a reduction in pollution, the air today is the cleanest i have ever seen it, i have pictures of flying in syd in the early 90's and on a hot summer day, the visibility was atrocious in smog. that doesn't happen anymore. so a cleaner environment can only be a good thing...
though i dont believe CO2 has anything to do with global climate CHANGE... (not warming)

actually its the high range rifle range north of goulburn..... not exactly an airstrip, but could be in an emergency with all the tiger country around there.
how about this one

i have a SC10(?) self contained strobe on my vampire, they run off 12v DC, no separate flasher unit, just the light, visibility is tested to 30NM, which is apparently GA standard in the US, got mine from aircraft spruce for about $70
on the bottom of the pod is a pulsating beacon, it doesnt flash, just goes from dull to very bright once a second. i have been told the beacon can be seen easily when im on final, as its a constantly varying light its easy to spot.

there is a Jab LSA available at Hoxton park! with the sydney jabiru flying school. sydneyjabiru.com.au

i was there when it happened, didnt see it, but helped out with first aid, it was a textbook crash, he literally walked away with a small scratch on his leg. all day yesterday, when it happened, and all day today the wind has been a steady 15 to 20kt wind from the north. though yesterday it was a bit more gusty around 15 kts. but as said before,he walked away uninjured, and thats the important part.

what about the smaller cessna types, the C150 or early Piper tripacer?
-
why is that? and whats the alternative? Not big on civvy 'greaser landings' either -
100K for a twin is a bargain! what would you expect to pay for a GA twin these days?
-
i know its a little late, but a little tip... when buying a Whiz Wheel type flight computer, try and get the biggest one you can! sure it might look a bit strange, but your calculations will be spot on!
-
Yep, a twin engined drifter, or better known as a.... damn, i cant remeber what is was called now, but there is a blue one VH registered in NSW somewhere, well there was in Hoxton park a few yrs ago!
edit, thats it, the Aircam!
-
sadly thats part of the reason i have been taking a lot of film and pics flying in and out of Hoxton park..... now if i only win the 50 Million Powerball, i might have enough to buy the site and keep it as an airport!

Hopefully will be there some time next weekend with wally, while doing my instructors rating! so i might get to see and hear the museum aircraft again.
The jabiru is owned by Dr Carol Richards, i was practicing flying from the right hand seat after doing my PMI course with her.

congrats! that will be a flight you will never forget!

Just some pics from my weekend in Temora.
and a fantastic aero club with great atmosphere! is it possible to be a member of too many aero clubs? Cessnock, Goulburn, and now Temora?

the smiles in the first pic say more than words ever can!

professional photo software for mac is Aperture, very similar to adobe lightroom,
I have yet to find a piece of software there wasnt a mac equivalent for, and if there isnt, the mac can still run microsoft based software through parrellels, of if you have enough hard drive space, you can install microsoft vista/xp on a hard drive partition, and have 2 computers!!
a good site for software available on macs is here

Outside of aviation, your ASIC is a worthless piece of plastic, its not a recognized form of ID.

I have a 24 Inch Imac, before this i have only ever had PCs, with the new mac, i had it figured out within a few hrs, they are not that dissimilar to Windows OS.
I have Xplane, though havnt actually played it yet, but i still use FSX via parallels
just last week i purchased a new macbook as well to take with me to the flying school and at work, now everyone at work wants one, so much easier to use, and no more stuffing around with OS issues, oh, and not to mention, no need for antivirus software!
another little feature i love is the RSS feed visualiser for the screensaver, just add the link to these forums RSS feed, and all the new threads are right there on the screensaver!

i have never heard of a line up check before, i have all those one in the run up/pre take off checks, the only check i do when rolling is engine RPM and temps and pressures. all other engine vitals are done during the runup, things like generator/alternator charging, vacuum pressure etc, followed by transponder on ALT, radios etc then move off to the runway.

checklists every time. memory can fail, even if you dont think you have forgotten something.
read from the list for start up, and runups, and i will have a quick glance at the list early downwind for pre landing.

Global Climate - are you Cool, Hot, or dont give a Hoot ?

what about the bigger picture, we are living on the very thin crust of a massive ball of Molten rock! heated externally also by a star that is millions of times larger than the planet!
i remember a quote in a Stephen hawking book, "image the earth is an apple. if you cut the apple in half, the thickness of the layer of skin, represents the total thicknes of the earths crust and atmosphere.the rest of the apple is molten rock, now hold this apple 1.5 inch from a large light bulb, this represents the suns influence.
now just where does the 0.001% CO2 in the atmosphere come into influencing the surface temperate of the apple?
also i think the time scale has been greatly exaggerated, it only takes humans on average 1 yr to adjust to a new climate, just ask those moving from the UK to Aus! so im sure a temp increase of 1 deg over homw many hundreds of years, will have No impact on our lifestyle. the only reason humans are so prolific on this planets is our natural ability to adapt to all but the most extreme environments.
not only that, a few weeks ago, i took my kayak out and paddled up port hacking, and noticed very old tide and wave erosion evident in the sandstone a good 50 ft above current levels!
on a lighter note, if rising temps are such a worry, why does everyone head to warmer climates for holidays?
