  1. i remember falling victim to the false climb illusion during my NVFR. at bankstown it wasnt a problem, but departing mudgee at 9pm, away from the town, i felt its effects. somewho my instructor knew it was going to happen and was prepared, fortunatly i have never experienced it since.... now the black hole approach is scary.!

  2. i heard about the sierra incident from a friend up there, apparently he came in very fast, landed past the halfway point of the strip, and wheelbarrowed it in 2 times before the nose gear failed... sadly in front of a large crowd. and already im hearing bad things about Raaus pilots and their training standards... sheesh. some GA guys just cant help themselves but whinge... oh well.

  3. once the CTA endo comes in, and with a few phone calls to the tower, im sure they will be able to figure something out within daylight hours.

though im sure it will require a flight plan to be lodged etc, the guys in the syd tower are always willing to help if asked.

as for a good camera guy, i cant help with that! i tried taping a small camera to my headset ], it didnt work out to well, its amazing just how much your head moves around scanning for traffic, instruments etc. made for quite a nauseating video!

  4. :rotary:

When the CTA things come in, I want to find someone who is good with a video camera and book a landing at YSSY early one morning.

So what about the landing fee!

It would be so "kewl" I reckon.

    :big_grin::man flying:

that would be cool! but expensive, landing fee is minimum $250/tonne. then a taxi fee of about $80. then there is the airways charges on top of that. a few yrs ago i was a pax in a duchess into YSSY, cost was about $400 all u, and all we did was a touch go. could be wrong though, most likely am, as it was some time ago now, best option is to simply ring up and ask!

The trick with getting into the sydney CTA on the cheap is sadly after 11pm. after that time ATC will give you clearance to do just about anything. the finally to m NVFR yrs ago was a nav to cessnock and back then direct to Sydney Kingsford smith then harbour orbits then via parramatta river direct to Bankstown. fantastic flying and scenery over the city at night, and no tother traffic other than night freight departing syd to the south.

if your aircraft meets requirement to fly in CTA, and with an appropriate licence, then there is no reason you cant fly into syd if you ask the tower.

  5. last week at bankstown, 2 aircraft in front of us in the circuit were blasted by the tower for breaching sydney control zone! tower directed us to turn base early as possible, and in the tecam at 50 kts, that can be close, we went from number 3 behind a cessna and cherokee, to number 1! and still flew a normal circuit. the 2 aircraft we overtook were 6 miles east when they turned base! saddest part was, both had instructors on board..so is Teraya single?

  6. I've met her, and the guy who taught me to fly powered was taught by her.I don't have much to do with her, except to occaisonally have to watch for aircraft you would swear were departing the area, but are actually in circuit. You pretty much need an XC endorsement to fly the circuits she teaches.

thats what drives me nuts at Bankstown, all the PPl students flying 5 to 10 mile circuits!

  7. just got back from a long nav over the weekend, and found myself using all 3. 6 min marks to get groundspeed checks and time to next waypoint and visual feature etc, 10 Mile marks but only when 20 miles from an airport, and used in conjunction with the 6 min marks to give accurate ETA's to the circuit. and 10 min marks for CLEAROFF checks and fuel log.

  8. i usuallly take over early as well, if things start looking ugly, but as i do, talk them through it and explain the consequences. if they dont really understand what went wrong, then get some height and demonstrate what could go wrong but in a controlled fashion in a later lesson. a good one is the overbanking in a steep climb. i stop em going more than 20 deg angle of bank, explain what would happen if i didnt, and when the opportunity arises later, at height, ask the student to show best angle of climb, and then a climbing turn. if they have learnt from before, they wont mess it up, if they havnt, a stall in a climbing turn at height is a real eye opener. fortunatly only 1 student has suffered that. he has a new respect for stalls and bank angles in turns. and now he dicatates to me what hes doing in th turns.

On the video though, i have never landed at Jaspers, hmmm if weathers good might come down tomorrow.. anyway, we are fortunate here at bankstown that if the student has forgotten flaps up after landing, i wont let him advance the throttle till he has. we have 2000 mtrs of tarmac to play with, so probably not a good idea at jaspers...

and i thought the sportstar would climb out better than that?

  9. what if the beach has legal vehicle access? i have a holiday spot at Hat Head, between south west rocks and crescent head, both beaches either side ar 12 miles long, and the only people on them most times are in 4x4s. so i figure, you just buy your beach driving permit. wait for low tide. i could be wrong though...

  10. they way i describe the Tecnam in relation to the Jabiru (i fly both) is this...

Think of the Jabiru as a Holden Commodore. cheap, very solid, reliable airframe, mechanically Ok if treated right. drives and handles, well, like a commodore. pretty average.

the Tecnam is more your BMW M3. Drives brilliantly, handles like a dream. electric everything. Mechanically very reliable, but if stuff does wear out, can be expensive on parts.

i am in a strange situation, i fly both Jabiru and tecnam every day, to fly, i choose the Tecnam every time.. to own, well, i will be buying a J230 very soon.. (waiting on CASA).

  11. sorry, us tecnam drivers are out flying!

    why do i love it?

brilliant climb performance, excellent handling! flies like a dream, beautifully balanced, good STOL ability. unmatched visibility.

brakes that work, no issues with starting in cold and sub zero temps.(you dont see the tecnam threads come alive with cold starting issues every winter)

only negative, average endurance. and euro costs.

  12. ok, on sunday i had to repair the area around the Left undercarriage leg of our Jabiru, so before removing the old repair, i conducted a test.

The resin system is an Epoxy, any solvent can be used, and the paint is 2 pac Polyurethane, and is resistant to Acetone
