  1. im not usually scared of snakes or spiders as long as i can see them, snakes, the only nes that do scare me a Browns and King browns, as theya re agressive bastards, but redbellies etc arnt usually fatal if they bite, and will only bite if provoked or cornered. browns are just mean bad buggers.

     

     

  2. i cant believe the amount of crap over something so simple, but then again, thats the CASA way, the FAA have approved Ipads as acceptable substitute to paper copies inflight paperwork, Alaskan airlines has been the first to replace all paper in the cockpit with ipads and pdf readers. why is it so hard to do in OZ....

     

     

  3. i bought my 450D SLR as a twin lens kit, all the twin lens kit is, you get the SLR body, and 2 seperate lenses, one is 18-55mm and the other 55 to 200mm, and basically a SLR means when you are looking through the viewfinder, you are actually looking through the lens as the sensor will see it. when you hit the shutter button, the viewing mirror flips up and exposes the sensor. hence that distinctive sound when you take a shot.

     

    also, with DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras, dont worry too much about megapixel count, the real image quality comes from the size of the CMOS (image) sensor. a camera phone can be 10 megapixels, but they are crammed onto a sensor the size of a pinhead, the lens has to focus all the light onto a tiny spot, whereas a Cannon 7D for example has a sensor that is almost 1 inch, well 22.4mm to be exact. so you get the same light spread over a larger area giving far more detail.

     

    as said before, a twin lens kit is a good starter for SLR stuff, but the lower the Fstop value a lens can get, the better. some lenses can cost well over 10 times the cost of the camera. at least with a Canon/Nikon body, you cant go to far wrong, its the lenses that make the camera.

     

     

  4. i find it interesting not much has been said about the precautionary search and landing..

     

    in the PPL training, i was taught the rate 1 turn 180 deg under the hood, but also, if you are just in the bottom of the cloud, and you know there is some clear air below, then just relax on the controls, and reduce power to approx 50% and let the aircraft slowly descend while trimmed straight and level.

     

    but if i was in an area, cloud forming everywhere, and it can form quickly when fronts and such arrive, find myself under a lowering base, valley walls on 3 or more sides, rather than consider climbing through it, i would start looking for somewhere to perform a Prec search and landing.. road, paddock, driveway, golf course (much easier in a Savvy) and with a perfectly sevicable aircraft, you have time to find a suitable landing place. i would rather bend a wing hitting something while performing a prec searhc and landing on a golf course, than have ATSB investigator pick my teeth out of whats left of an aircraft in a smouldering crater.

     

     

  5. Log book, Maps. blank flight plan forms, Ops manual, Ersa, pens/pencils, ruler, plotter, flight computer, electronic flight computer, GPS, lots of rechargable AA batteries for GPS and headset. battery charger, watch.

     

    thats about it, not including empty food wrappers, old pocket lint etc etc.

     

     

  6. dont know about some of you guys, but i prefer to learn from the mistakes of others, not experience them myself. i try to impart this same method of learning to my student, so instead of letting a student fly into a TS, i will stop them from doing it and explain in the debreif the dangers of letting them continue into the TS and either through video, atsb reports or whatever, and hopefully, the student will have learned from the mistakes of others about the dangers of flying into a TS.

  7. Our savvy with the 100Hp and prop piched at 21deg, cruises at 87 kts with 5100 rpm at MTOW, when 1 up with half fuel it will cruise at 90 with 5100 rpm.

     

    as for fuel we have 110 ltr capacity, which is standard tanks plus 1 reserve tank, 3 total,

     

    it has an empty weight of 280 kg, so with full tanks at about 75 kg, it gives us about 190 kg left over for us and baggage. if we want to take some baggage we just dont fill the third tank, and still have a 4 hr endurance.

     

     

  8. yes, times are changing, as they always do, but have you ever considered that the rag and tube grassroots flying of the past, hasnt actually shrunk, its just the membership has expanded rapidly in the near past, and these new members simply dont have a memory of these rag and tube days?

     

    my early days of aviation in the late 80's was GA, i had no idea rag and tube aircraft existed. it wasnt until the Jabiru arrived on the scene that i discovered RAAus, or the AUF as it was then and how cost effective it made flying..
