  1. Yep! That is exactly what I did. I had RAA Pilot Cert with Nav and Prop Endorsements. Went to RPL, and they gave me Nav, Radio and MPPC. I then went and did CTA/CTR endos, and I can now go anywhere in my RV7. 🙂

  3. For transparency - I own and operate Australia's first and longest operating RPAS training organisation - FPV Australia. Happy to answer any questions re drones etc.
  4. Negative. There is no requirement for a radio anymore. In fact, most hobby flyers won't even know what a relevant event is, let alone where to find radio frequencies (and can't without certification anyway!
  5. OK... Let's clear this up, and it is really easy.... To fly in controlled airspace, you must hold a current Part61 CASA licence, with CTA endorsements. The only way to keep that current is to do an AFR in a VH registered aircraft. (Now called an Airplane Flight Review - every 2 years) That's it. No more no less. The good thing is, RAA will recognise that AFR, in place of an RAA BFR, and your RAA certificate will reset for another 2 years. CASA will not recognise an AFR in an RAA registered aircraft. Why not? Ask CASA - but they don't. That should clear it up.
  6. I hear ya lads! When I noticed this slight change to the Part101 MoS, I raised it with CASA, as I didn't think allowing anyone to fly a drone over the airfield was a good idea, but was told... No. This change will stay. 😞 Not my idea of a good time!
  7. Yep! As Bernie mentioned above. Current arrangements are, if you convert your RPC to RPL (Not that hard to do actually) you will need to get CTA/CTR endorsements, and you will need to complete a BFR (in a GA machine) every 2 years to keep it.
  8. I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would throw this in... Not that long ago CASA made some changes to Part101 MoS (Part 101 is for RPA) and they removed the restrictions preventing anyone from flying within the airport boundary. Yes - you read it right - they removed the restrictions. (Non controlled of course) So now, someone can legally fly a drone inside the airport boundary (not during a relevant event). Which is when you an crewed aircraft operating within 3nm of said airport. Sounds nuts?? Because it is!! 😞
  9. UPDATE. Had a response re losing a month, and was basically told, it is all from the month it gets processed. They alert 60 days from expiry, so if you act early, you will lose a month! LOL!

  11. Hello All, I thought I would share my recent experience in renewing my ASIC. I got the email that it was coming up, and actioned it straight away. I chose the post office option, so went down that day to the Post Office to get it processed. Wed 1 April. 7 Days later I received an email to say it was approved. Wed 8 April The following week I had the card in my hand. The only gripe I have is my existing card, that I have no sent back, expired in May. This new card expires in April. So being quick to renew, actually means I have lost a month, so I should have waited until 1 May to renew. But I had heard the horror stories and didn't want to risk being without one. PS - This was through Veritas. Cheers J

  14. I don't think it's piss poor - just not their issue really - but the factory yes. I guess it would be interesting to see what they are fitting to new aircraft.
  15. Thanks sfGnome. That's what I am reading too - and yes it is a Rotax with the Ducatti regulator. That said, I am surprised it can handle a lithium battery without a BMS, as voltages are not the same with a lead acid. I have had no issues with this current battery, but it is now getting long in the tooth, and should ideally be swapped out.
  16. Yep! Done that, and as expected, the advice was to find a battery that fit. I would not really expect the sales agent to have any further information, to be honest!
  17. Hello All, So my Bristell is in need of a new battery, and the one in the machine is Lithium. The company that makes the battery still makes them, but now they come with a BMS, and they have advised not to use the new battery with the BMS in the Aircraft. I have done a bit of searching around the Internet, and have mixed information. I see EarthX have batteries with BMS but seem to be aimed at the aviation market. I have no room to install a standard Lead Acid, plus the knock on effects of the change to CoG etc. So I need to come up with a solution. I would love your opinions? Cheers John
  18. I never said it is a perfect machine - no aircraft is. There probably isn't a model of aircraft in the market that has not been in an incident. My exception was to your comment that they have "has some serious handling issues", which they actually don't. The problems were the data was wrong, which resulted in aircraft being poorly loaded. You do that with anything in this class, and you will get the same result. I agree - this latest incident raises more questions than it answers, and given the little bits that we know, there is no way of knowing what happened. But the lack of comms etc, as you have mentioned, leans me away from an aircraft issue - but sadly, we may never know.
  19. Yep! 100%. The Datum issue was a real problem, and yes, someone at the factory has a lot to answer to. The CoG of the Bristells are tight - no doubt about it. I am lucky, myself and my wife are lightweights, so we don't have an issue. I would hate to have a couple that are 100kg each. But then, the Bristell is no the airplane for them. I have had my machine re-weighted and balanced by a CASA Auth, and made sure all my numbers are correct. After the debacle with the data, I wanted to know. Because we are light, I am able to add weight forward of the firewall, and removed the sleeper from the rear, so now I have a nicely balanced machine. For the record, I have stalled my own Bristell, and was requested to do so on my last BFR (Not my Bristell) and it does what just about every other aircraft in its class does. No surprises.
  20. LOL! Nothing about being defensive, and for the record, I know just about everything about every fatal incident the Bristell has ever been involved in. So how long have you got? So let's look at what you posted shall we... "The Bristell exhibits different handling characteristics to the other aircraft type the student pilot had previously operated" What part of that gives it serious issues? The incident you speak of was an inexperienced pilot, that had no business being in the cockpit in the first place - Nothing to do with the aircraft! He had zero experience with it. Next one... The report you have quoted, has now also been sorted - otherwise, if they did not meet the standard, they would be off the market. The aircraft has now been proven to spin recover. (there is video if you have 5 minutes, not hard to find) Now the tendency to drop a wing... How many do that at stall! LOL! My Sportstar did that! Sheesh! Facts? - LOL! That's funny! I am not being a defensive aircraft owner, but if you are going to speak facts, then make sure you get the facts right, or you just look silly.
  21. Serious handling issues?? And you have proof of this information where? I’ve owned and flown one for 5 years mate. There’s no “serious” issue that I know of, or have ever experienced, so I’m curious on your statement. Care to elaborate??
