  1. I asked around if people were voting in the RAA elections. Mostly people simply couldn't be bothered. Didn't care.

Some thought I was the wierd one by actually taking an interest and voting.

I can't help thinking most Australians are actually very ignorant and naive about political processes and the ability to initiate change.

Basically sheep, waiting to be told what to do......

  2. Floods in Melbourne quoted me $223 for a vdo 360.081 and I thought that was a bit too expensive.

If you were going that far, you might as well upgrade to a Keller, which would mean a new gauge and wiring.....

Mine has lasted well and I've not heard of problems......

  3. Different countries have different discrimination laws...... obviously.

They might save $500 000 in fuel but in Aus they'd be PAYING $500 000 in law suits...

I've seen a few "chubby" flight attendants in the terminals in the last few weeks. A reflection of our society in general unfortunately.

  4. One theory.....

The oil pressure control valve (ball and spring?) May have had the ball stuck for a few seconds overpressurising the system for a second or two.

The seal on the oil filter may have been the first point of failure and popped out briefly.

Cold oil (higher pressure) and sitting for a while may have contributed to this. Perhaps some oil residue of some sort sitting around the ball.

Do you turn over, mags off, to get oil pressure first or a straight kick in the guts?

  5. The safety advisor that does mine seems to know very little about "recreational" aviation, GA or otherwise, and tends to engage more with the commercial operators in the room.

Yet the theme of most nights is directed more at private operations I feel, with the majority attending from that demographic.

Many of the local commercial operators never attend which seems strange to me as aviation is their livelihood......

  6. At 12 to 16000 ft OAT is going to be pretty cold but the turbo is going to be working hard compressing air to sea level oxygen levels so I don't really know if this temp is normal or not.

You will get the best answer from the "Rotax Owners" forum.

There are a number of sensors on these engines to control boost limits. I imagine air inlet temp is one of them.

  7. I have searched this website, found a couple of posts dating back some years, but does anyone have any recent experience using the Mercedes Smart car engine in aircraft?

There was one recently at White Gum Farm, York, but I did not get the chance to chat with the owner. Just wondering pros and cons?????

The aircraft at Whitegum was "Viv's" (Vivian?). It is an FK aircraft. Nice bloke and would be happy to talk to you I think.

    Contact the SABC.

Or attend the fly in, this 27th October.

From what I know it runs fine but the engine (and conversion) was out of production some time ago so parts are not as common and you usually need to import from europe.

If l was looking for a new engine, Aeromomentum as above would be my number 1.

  8. This, he said, was usually from the water-pump seal, and it necessitated removing the engine to get at it

Depends on how far off the firewall the back of the engine is and what is in the way.

Plenty can be accessed and done in place. It might also depend on the ...ahhh... "flexability" (physical and mental) of the person involved replacing it. The longer it takes, the more $$ can be charged.

To be CLEAR, I'm not making and accusations against an individual or organisation and have no knowledge of this particular case. Some do indeed require engine removal.

Most leaks I have seen have come from the threaded section of pipe elbow that goes into and out of the heads. These just have loctite to seal and hold them at the correct angle for the hose, so try not to knock or push on them. As the loctite sets hard any movement "cracks" the seal. They generally just start a slow weep picked up on inspection.

  9. The information I have is that RAA aircraft should run on hobbs and GA on tacho.

That not particularly being my opinion, good or bad, but from what I've seen.

There was a local aircraft that was changed from ga to RAA rego.

It was maintained by a LAME under tacho hours in GA.

RAA wanted it maintained under hobbs, so it "gained" a couple of hundred hours unfortunately.

Note, it contained both hobbs and tacho meters.

If it was me, I would have probably just continued on tacho, and not sought clarification....?

  10. I helped repair a leak in a top inspection hole on a wing.

It had a cork gasket. We cleaned it well with acetone an applied a sealant from an automotive store.

It was called "something" putty. I was worried it was going to be thick like muffler putty but was more like thick silicone. Worked well.

I'll try and find full name.
