  1. Well I am going to add my 2 cents worth into this discussion...and not because I have been involved in the radio industry for 30 years...Anyone who does not have a radio in their aircraft is a "BLOODY IDIOT". I dont give 2 hoots about all the comments on airmanship and proceedures the fact of the matter is most are flying aircraft that cost 20K up to 200K and what you cant afford a scummy $400 or even less for a good second hand one to let everyone know where you are...or at worst at least hear everyone who is around and or in the circuit so you are informed and at least able to get out of someones way. I am incredulous we are even having this thread..to me it is utter stupidity NOT to have a radio..and at least a working radio on receive for starters but of course a fully functioning radio would be the norm.

I personally take all radio calls I hear seriously and all of my actions while flying are determined by those calls. Is this not applying the best safety standard you can. When we are all playing in the third dimension which is a life limiting factor why would you not have something so simple to obtain and use to help you negotiate that third dimension with a bit of extra safety.

I am flabbergasted at some of the comments on this thread

  2. If you could do that then you were sitting right on the transmitter AND the headset system must have had some sort of amplifier system or a separate intercom system in it to be able to pick the rf field up. I wouldn't be hanging around that area too long unless you want a couple of courses of chemo. Thats a lot of RF to be soaking up

Most aviation radios are around the same price give or take a few bucks and some are definately better than others.

  3. Highly unlikely JetJr...The RF field would have to be ridiculously high for it to be picked up in the headsets. I can tell you from experience with the Microair radios that they have many issues in the VCO and mixers and can be unstable at times. When they go out of lock they still transmit but up on 148 mhz...I think you will find it is the radio not the headsets

  4. I modified my mates Raptor. Just made adaptor leads to the proper jacks so he could use a std headset and it works very well. I own all the Raptor stuff now as John sold it all to me and have been working slowly at trying to improve the noise handling and repeatability of that function. it has proved difficult. Some intercoms work fine others not. Some headsets do make a big difference in noise performance. The basic design of the Raptor is solid and uses pretty much what every other intercom uses. I am in the process of making a whole new intercom using some designs of others and the Raptor trying to come up with something that is consistant and repeatable in high noise environments like trikes. The big issue with trikes of course is you are throwing that big noise generator behind you straight down the throat of the microphone.

Flycom use a extremely small microphone element and this helps a lot in noise rejection but they are extremely difficult to source. I havent managed to find anything suitable yet maybe they get them especially made I am not sure but also you do need the mic to be right on your mouth and this is of course due to that small mic and its capture area.

  5. IMG_3024.jpg.f7d74e576458a7614ea6087c51189a60.jpg Went flying today its actually been about 12 weeks since I flew her. Roger Western in his Spirit,Danny Leach in his Sav and me in the girlfriend flew from Ycab up to Teewah which is just south of Rainbow Beach. The girlfriend performed flawlessly. It was good to get back into the saddle

  6. I dont need a armrest now with the 2 sticks...it is far more comfortable to fly now. Just a more natural position for hands and arms now. The new mods to the seats would make it almost impossible to fit the twin sticks anyway by the look of it. It would have to be a whole new mounting system for them

Got the original exhaust system back on today. Cleaned and reset the spark plug gaps. Drained all the fuel out as its been sitting in the tanks now for about 7 weeks so that goes into the Mrs car as mine is a diesel now. Will put some new fuel into her tomorrow morning and start her up without the cowl on to make sure all is ok then put the cowls back on. Probably wont be able to go for a fly in the morning as I have to be back here by 9 am then got a lot of things I have to get done so hopefully early Sunday morning I will commit some aviation

  7. Fitted the bottom cowl back on today to do all the masking up for the white ticks on the front. Finally got it all painted this afternoon. Will go tomorrow and refit the original exhaust system and check my plugs then put it all back together....and then I can go fly 017_happy_dance.gif.8a199466e9bd67cc25ecc8b442db76ba.gif

  8. I have built my own here using 10watt and 20 watt LED chips. The power supplies are the issue. Trying to find a commercial powersupply that is clean for them is very difficult. The fallback is of course to make your own. I have been playing with some circuits over the past 12 months but all are very hard to quiet down. The big problem is dropping down the voltage using a linear circuit you have to get rid of the lost voltage as heat and they are not very efficient because of it. Rule number 1 is....."You never get something for nothing"
