Very sad story for all associated with the pilots. Channel 7 news tonight reported that one of the students was Bas Scheffer's son who was training towards a commercial licence. Bas is a co-founder of OzRunways and is still very prominent in it's promotion. May we all eventually learn from the ATSB report.

Light aircraft crash at Heck Field 27/01/26

As a Subaru owner, driver and flyer for decades I agree with the comments about the EJ25 QUAD CAM engine, particularly when owner modified, but stand by the unmodified single cam versions of the EJ series. Our first Outback had the quad cam EJ25 and head gaskets were an issue until I fitted after-market multi-layer ones rather than the crimped steel shim of the OEM gaskets. The EJ25 (single cam) in our current 2012 Outback has done over 300,000 Km with only scheduled servicing and still runs the same as when new. The EJ22 in my car club registered 1994 Liberty is the same - scheduled servicing and no issues over 200,000+ Km. In my opinion, the most reliable Subaru engine ever. I plead guilty to carrying out my own conversion of the EA81 in the BushCaddy, but in March it will have been flying for 20 years and currently has done 880+ successful hours. Please don't condemn ALL Subaru engines!- 130 replies

ATSB Preliminary findings released yesterday. "The aircraft passed under the north-south powerline and was tracking toward a pole that supported the second line roughly 240m away. Recorded data from the flight showed the pilot conducted a right turn underneath the powerline after which the aircraft collided with terrain" Aerial photo shows drag marks in the crop from the right wingtip, spray boom and wheel before crashing upside down

My centre stick is attached to a torque tube which runs aft to behind the seats. It was relatively easy to add a short lever below this tube, attached by a hose clamp, which connects to two opposed springs and a cable. A control wheel below the left seat alters the amount of this spring bias in either direction while still allowing full roll commands to over-ride the weak springs. This setup has worked well for many years. If desired, I could take some pics when I next head to the hangar.

Thank you Red 750, My R80 (BushCaddy kit number 105) was to my knowledge the second one to fly in Australia, now over 19 years ago. It still serves me very well. -
I have done this by gently squeezing across the crimps with pliers which have curved jaws to slightly open the crimps, enough to insert a very fine blade screwdriver and twist the crimps open. Side cuttters can then cut the band to remove it. Cable ties do an equivalent job when re-assembling. There’s your suggestion!!!

Kawasaki entering into aviation engine market

And very capable engines, too. Mine has pulled me through the sky for the last 19 years and has every indication of doing so for many more. -
Has anyone used an ANR headphone conversion kit?
bushcaddy105 replied to Methusala's topic in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Have used the DIY kits in Pilot brand headsets for years. Very good attenuation. 2 tips:- The accessory replacement cables which include the power wires make the setup much less likely to tangle. Make up a 9 volt power supply run from the plane’s 12 volts and fit a socket next to the headset sockets. No worries then about battery life. -
bushcaddy105 started following Subaru EA81 SU carby with manifold
-
This is the same setup that I have been using for 18 years. The carby is an SU HIF6 (1 3/4 inch throat) from a single carby Volvo 144. This version has an enricher valve (read "choke") that twin carb versions don't have. As a pressure operated carby it automatically altitude compensates (same as Bing used on Rotax and Jabiru) and also has a temperature compensated jet. The throttle spring is set up for wide open if linkage or cable disconnects. The piston slide uses a linear ball race for trouble-free operation. Depending on the level of engine tune the needle may need to be replaced. I find a needle code BAG most suitable on my engine. The manifold is actually from an EA82 engine which has the advantage of the water outlet being at the firewall end of the installation. It has been modified with unwanted coolant and vacuum pipes plugged.`The adaptor elbow is angled to keep the carby horizontal in flight. For sale due to clean-out prior to downsizing.

Having visited the memorial at the site of his flight, and reading the handwritten testimonials late in their lives by then students at the nearby school who witnessed the flight, I am personally convinced that he was the first. (These original testimonials are on display at MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology). The only grounds for denial that Americans will quote is that Richard himself got the date wrong when interviewed towards the end of his life in a mental institution. -
Arkaroola is worth considering - spectacular landscapes, but do it in winter or early morning. In summer the turbulence can be scary. The resort will pick you up from the airstrip if staying overnight.

No benefit for South Australian members, or Western Australian and NT too for that matter. The closest outlets are all in EST time zones. No bouquets from me.
