  1. The Meteor tank engine was based on the Merlin engine. In fact, many of the earliest Meteor tank engines were built from salvaged Merlin parts from wrecked aircraft.

The only major difference between the Merlin and Meteor was the engines ran in opposite directions, as automotive drive rotation and aircraft drive rotation are nearly always opposite.

  2. If you desire a change to another site name, it would need to be for compelling and overwhelming reasons, to ensure a massive increase in site searches and hits.

So, I'd suggest "Recreational Sex and Drugs Flying" will achieve your aim. :classic_biggrin:

However, you may end up with many disappointed site users if you go that way - particularly when they find the site is merely one catering to a select group of mainly middle-aged and older farts, who are well-heeled, and can indulge in what is largely seen as a "rich mans sport".

About the only reason you would want to change the site name, is if it was linked to another confusing site, or had a similar name to a dubious site, that had a bad smell/reputation about it. In that case, you would certainly want to change the name.

But as it stands, you have two words in the name that accurately describe what the site covers, and I see no compelling need to change the name.

  3. .....it was all a huge misunderstanding. But Cappy was inconsolable. Not only was he now nursing a deep flesh wound in his buttock, which made sitting very uncomfortable - he was also short of two comfortable chairs in the long grass, where he could relax and sip his G&T's, when the pressures of the world became too much.

Suddenly, there was a roar of a powerful car, and a red Ferrari flashed into view, and pulled up in front of the pair.

It was Cappys famous Italian playboy friend, Alfredo Gaetani di Laurenzana del'Aquila d'Aragona Monatelli - known simply as Fred to his friends.

He jumped out of the Ferrari and went over to Cappy, and hugged him and kissed him on both cheeks, in a display of typical European genuine affection.

However, this effusive old Italian greeting could also be a simple diversion, to deflect from the true meaning of the visit - to assassinate the greeted one.

Cappy was wary, he always suspected his playboys friends money had mysterious origins - and now, this effusive greeting was making him even more wary.

He backed away a little, to look for the warning protruding bulges in Freds pants........

  4. The Dictionary definition of "plunge" -  "to (cause someone or something to) move or fall suddenly, and often a long way forward, down, or into something".

This photo would definitely classify the movement as "plunging". No gliding here, just a straight-out fall, without any support from airflow over the wings. I really am quite amazed the pair survived as well as they did.

  5. Nope, I have to agree with M61A1. Machines deteriorate just as quickly, sitting around, than they do being operated. Corrosion sets in rapidly when oiled surfaces are left unattended, with the oil coating draining off them.

Insects and rodents are notorious for finding homes in unattended machines. I have a locked 20' sea container for storage. I recently found rat chew marks on a cardboard box containing parts.

How does a rat get into a locked sea container?? They find ways to do it. Mud dauber wasps are well known for their work, they can install a nest in hours in an unattended machine.

Hoses and rubber parts deteriorate just with time and UV light - and it doesn't have to be direct, bright sunlight. UV light is easily reflected, as anyone knows who has installed trimdek roof sheeting on a roof on a moderately sunny day - when they end up being sunburnt from the reflection from the sheeting.

Coolant and metals (if you're running a liquid-cooled engine) are in continuous chemical imbalance, and coolant and engine corrosion doesn't stop, when you kill the engine. It continues, day and night, regardless of whether the engine is running.

Corrosion also starts on exposed cables and hose clamps and bolts and a hundred other metal parts, when they just sit. The corrosion comes from moisture and humidity changes from day to night, and from industrial pollutants in the air that come to rest on those parts. Even plain dust carries reactive chemical compounds such as iron oxides from laterites, that settle on parts, and which then gather and hold moisture.

  6. It looks a bit faked to me. What is holding the drones in position, horizontally? The high pressure of water leaving a fire hose usually takes 3 blokes, bracing themselves, to hold the hose steady - either that, or a solid hose support arrangement.

The weight of the water in the vertical section of those hoses would be huge - more than any drone could support. I can't see this "Drone firefighting", happening any time soon.

For fire observation and water guidance purposes - Yes. But for actually handling the water weight, and pressure required - No.

  7. I have purchased many items of equipment, sight unseen. There are two processes I utilise.

One is, I utilise someone known or highly recommended to me, to inspect the unit on my behalf. That person must have demonstrated mechanical examination skills or extensive experience as regards the item of equipment.

The second process is, I inspect it myself, after requesting time to get to the site of the item.

I advise the seller clearly what is going to happen, and organise the inspection accordingly - and promptly.

I provide a small refundable (or non-refundable - this depends on the sellers attitude) deposit to the seller, that shows I am genuine, and the inspection will take place ASAP - during which time, I have the first right of refusal on the purchase, and no-one else can gazump me. I set a short time frame, in which the seller holds the item, until it has been inspected.

By providing a deposit, you are "sealing your interest". If you do not produce money of any type when requesting an inspection, you will always be regarded as a "tyre-kicker" - and the seller has the right to sell to anyone else who makes a valid offer, while you're "getting your act together".

Upon inspection, I make a prompt decision to purchase, or not purchase, based on my own inspection, or on the report of the party I engaged for the inspection.

If I decide not to purchase, in most cases, the small deposit is refunded. In a few cases, the seller will demand to keep the deposit as compensation for holding the item temporarily for my exclusive potential purchase right.

This is uncommon, but can be the case when an item is highly sought after, and well-priced.

The biggest single factor you must take into account with an equipment purchase, is exactly what amount of work or money is required to bring the item up to the standard that you or the controlling authorities require.

Very few used items of equipment are in excellent, "ready-to-go" condition - most require money to be spent on them, and they are for sale because the owner prefers not to spend that money.

As a result, you weigh up what is required precisely by way of repairs/upgrades/replacements, and then consider the cost of that work required, and weigh that against the asking price.

Some sellers have an inflated idea of values, and peoples ideas of "true value", vary widely. Some sellers are difficult to deal with, and unyielding when it comes to lowering asking prices, in view of the work required on the item.

Other sellers are realistic and good negotiators and you can usually come to a satisfactory agreement with them.

Once the "deal is sealed", I produce a short contract form, which clearly states - the date, the item description, the items S/No or rego, the purchase deposit value, the sale value, and the period in which the balance is to be paid, to finalise the sale - and this agreement is then signed by both parties, and a copy provided to the seller. If finance is involved, then this must also be made clear on the agreement and the terms agreed accordingly with the seller.

"Subject to finance approval" is used on very large purchases such as property, but is rarely used in equipment sale agreements - but it can be included, if the seller is agreeable to this clause.

Even a simple, hand-written sale agreement is legally-enforceable, if things go wrong, and you end up fighting over the deal.

Of course, very few people will resort to such action unless serious losses are incurred. But, by providing this agreement, it reinforces your position and will hopefully prevent the seller from selling the item to another party.

However, if the person you're dealing with, has a lower level of ethics than expected, it is always possible they will abrogate the deal you made, and sell to someone else, before you roll up with the full amount.

On that basis, it is always wise to complete the sale rapidly, provide the balance as fast as you can, and take possession of the item.

  8. .....had set out especially to cause another major Religious War, by burning Cappys prized chairs. Or perhaps Mustapha was just intent on carrying out a Revolution, and burning items previously belonging to a Czar of Russia was another good way to repeat 1917 all over again.

But Cappy was made of sterner stuff than taking offence at his prize chairs becoming ash, and set out after Mustapha with the only thing Mustapha recognised and feared - Cappys 1850' Russian sword, taken from a dead Russian and given to Cappys great-grandfather at the Seige of Sevastopol in 1855 (the Czar later forgave Cappys family for that win, and the chairs were a gift to Cappys father for saving the Czars daughter from drowning - but that's a story for later).

With the same burning rage that drove his ancestor to breach the walls of Sevastopol, Cappy set off after Mustapha, who had taken to his heels with alacrity, the instant he spotted the sword, and realised that Cappy was deadly serious, and intent on revenge. But good fortune suddenly stepped in for Mustapha, as.........

He also drives a 1977 Moskvitch and flies a 1929 Polikarpov Po-2 biplane, which was recovered from a swamp in the Ukraine, and which was restored to flying condition by the local Moskvitch dealer - using Moskvitch parts, when no Polikarpov parts could be found. The whole aim of YouTube is to divert all traffic and eyes onto YouTube, away from other good sites.

The Free option on Streamable gives you 90 day video retention, Ad-supported playback, you can stream your videos in HD, and you get 500 MB or 10 min limit per video.

  13. Skippy, as recently as 2016, 6 NSW servo operators were caught and penalised for mogas adulteration with Toluene.

There have possibly been more adulterated fuel prosecutions since, that I have not come across.

When you have tight fuel margins and very high prices for fuels, the potential is increased for shonky behaviour in the fuel retailing industry.

  14. B-a, you find a free streaming video site and upload it to the site, then add the video link to your post here.

The free streaming sites have ads, and usually, your video is deleted after 90 days.

The alternative is a paid streaming site, which gives you a lot more options, but at a monthly fee cost which many prefer not to pay, when you're only wanting to share small videos that don't earn you anything.

  15. Hi Glen - The test for the volatile components of fuels is called the Reid Vapour Pressure test.

RVP is different to True Vapour Pressure because of the methodology of the measurement process.

It's essentially a lab test,  and I do not know any company producing a portable, easy-to use test kit for RVP for fuels.

However, there is a slick portable device available, called ERAVAP, which does carry out "bench" testing of the RVP of fuels and oils.

However, this machine still rates as a piece of lab equipment, and could not be regarded as a "portable test kit".

The cost of an ERAVAP machine would be pretty eye-watering, and not the sort of thing you'd buy just to sit in your hangar and only use once a month.

The primary dangers in mogas are cheap, unauthorised, low grade additives by unscrupulous independent service station owners (paint thinners, toluene, etc), contamination by dirt and water via old underground tanks, and poor venting and sealing systems, and low fuel turnover by servos in areas where fuel sales are minimal.

Accordingly, the best mogas comes from company-owned, new servos in high-traffic areas, where you see road tankers delivering fresh fuel every day or every couple of days.

The newer servos have fibreglass underground tanks that eliminate the corrosion problems of the old steel tanks.

  16. ....wash my socks and jocks? - as it had been a while since either had seen water or soap, and Starlight was starting to get pretty "woofy", as the word was, around the trenches.

But Starlight, being the tough and rough old character he was, wasn't in the least concerned about being "woofy" - as he reckoned, if he fell into enemy hands, he could get away more easily, when no enemy would come with 20 paces of him, thanks to his pong.

But then he realised that the ladies were more inclined towards blokes with faint whiffs of Old Spice, rather than week-old dags and cling-ons, and armpits that smelt like septic tanks that hadn't been cleaned out for 20 years.

Accordingly, he realised if he came across some delightful young creature, he couldn't risk it, and decided it was a wiser course to steer for....

Cappy was confused, startled, horrified, perplexed, shocked, mortified, perplexed, nonplussed, bewildered, confounded, mystified, baffled and even dumbfounded as to what had happened - and why.

The reason he was overcome with all these feelings and emotions, was because the Thesaurus he always carried on board (to find excellent epithets to throw at enemy pilots, when he'd run out of ammo), had flown up in the spin, and hit him in the face, open at page 255.

Cappy pulled the Thesaurus from his face, in an effort to see what what was happening. His world was spinning around him, and nothing he seemed to do, had any effect.

It was obvious the reetless dive was going to finish him off. "This can't be happening to me!!", he cried (to himself), "Because I've arranged to meet......

This results in the flame front having to be propagated across the entire combustion chamber, from just the one plug.

This, in effect, is similar to retarding the spark, and will result in lower power output, and a higher EGT registering on the gauge.
