  1. Finning on the inside of the sump is the dumbest idea I've heard of, and I have no idea what would possess someone to promote the idea.

    The basic idea of finning is to expose as much surface area to strong airflow that is carrying the heat well away from the heat-producing area. There is no strong airflow inside the sump.

    When aircooling with fins is designed to promote maximum effectiveness in cooling, the airflow is fan-forced and designed to carry serious volumes of air away. No such ability exists with a design where the fins are inside an engine sump.

     

    The greatest single weak point with separate external oil coolers is the plumbing - particularly plumbing that involves rubber hoses. I have seen numerous engines destroyed when oil cooler plumbing failed. The best plumbing for separate oil coolers is plumbing that is integral with the engine and cooler and has no rubber components.

    Finning is a very effective cooling measure, but it is never enough for oil cooling. Oil is the second largest source of engine cooling behind cooling air or coolant, and it needs a separate, radiator-style oil cooler to get rid of the engine heat.

    Finning is just an additional method of cooling that helps inadequate oil coolers.

  3. Nev, I don't really know a lot about the OEC air-assisted injection, because OEC are very coy on releasing any details, and they've developed several varieties of air-assisted injection, and their R&D is constantly ongoing.

    I do know OEC is right into UAV engine contracts with Uncle Sam, and they are exceptionally shy about revealing any details of that type of contract.

    They have licenced 4 marine engine manufacturers to use their injection system, and I also know that Peugeot is using their technology on a new scooter.

    But as far as finding out the technical details, OEC are telling us very little. I think the most information I've found, is in the following ASX interview.

  5. The air-assisted fuel injection is an Orbital Engine Company patented design, a spin-off from Ralph Sarich's original Orbital Engine development and research. OEC have licenced quite a few manufacturers for this fuel injection system.

  7. Actually, you don't have to travel to Middle Island (in the Recherche Archipelago) to see pink lakes. W.A. has several small pink lakes, scattered around the wheatbelt. There's one just East of Quairading, the Bruce Rock-Quairading Road runs right through the middle of it. But it needs a wet Winter to fill it.

     

    It's unfortunate that Esperances famous Pink Lake has lost its colour. I can remember well when it was a glorious pink, almost on a par with Lake Hillier. Just showing my age now. The Recherche Archipelago is stunning from any angle, by air or sea. But those islands are riddled with Tiger snakes.

  8. The partitioning of Pakistan came about as a decision by the British, simply because the Muslims and the Hindus were well on the way to civil war in India, pre the partition. They still hate each others guts, but at least they can do it from different countries now.

    The Muslims refuse to acknowledge our democratic style of sectarian Govts, both in India and any Western countries - they believe that Islam is religion and Govt all rolled up into one.

    Those Pakistani Muslims are really quite crazy, you only have to see the way they go ballistic in groups of tens of thousands, if any Westerner burns a Koran, or otherwise insults Islam. They are permanently one short fuse away from blowing up.

  9. .... Cappy had actually fallen right out when he stood the Moth on its nose, and landed on his head. But as it's well-known that there's little to damage inside the Jedi Rat's head, it was all good.

     

    Cappy stood up immediately after landing on his head, asked, "Where am I exactly?" - and some bystanders turned him around, and pointed him towards the Moth (which had landed itself perfectly in a 3-pointer, pilot-free, despite his claims), all his memories came flooding back, which....

  10. The 737MAX shambles, wasn't just a failure on Boeings part - it was also a major failure on the FAA's part, who became so enamoured with Boeing, and so close to them, that they rubber-stamped everything that Boeing did and wanted.

     

    I trust the FAA oversight procedures have improved to ensure that the FAA stays at arms length from Boeing, and that no cosy "one-on-one" relationships between Boeing and FAA executives, can be set up in the future.

  11. Apart from the elite rich, most people have taken a knock, financially, from the COVID-19 virus economic effects, in 2020. Property values are generally down, and many businesses have had a decline in sales and values somewhat.

     

    Add to that, the "China effect" on business confidence as China rages around like a bull in a china shop, hitting out at many formerly lucrative Chinese imports from Australia.

     

    As a result, consumer confidence has sagged somewhat, with a degree of uncertainty as to what 2021 will bring. In times like this, many people hold off on big-ticket "recreational" purchases.

     

    When I'm buying, I find people who are eager to sell - otherwise you run into sellers who ask a stupid price and who don't really care whether they sell the item or not.

     

    I love deceased estate offerings, people just want to get rid of items they have no interest in, because they belonged to someone else.

  12. I'm not all that sure about how far into the "impossible turn", the pilot at Serpentine was. He crashed just to the right of the runway, and not far from the end of it. 

     

    I'm only guessing that he wasn't too far above Vmc when the engine failed, and the rapid loss of thrust led to a stall, very quickly. There would be no time to deliberate on landing area choices.

     

    The Dyn-Aero stall characteristics could also have played a big part in this, too. The specifications state a stall speed of 47 kts.

     

    The Dyn-Aero is a very light "plastic fantastic" with a high top speed performance, but obviously with low-speed control inability. It's definitely not a STOL aircraft.

     

    There were also some sharp wind gusts around yesterday afternoon. A gust may have hit him at the most inopportune moment.

  13. Sorry to hear of the loss of a close piloting friend, Bull.

     

    1. The pilot has been officially identified as Darren Brady. Experienced pilot and LAME. He's listed on LinkedIn.

    2. The aircraft had been "undergoing maintenance", and was being taken up for a test flight.

    3. Several witnesses saw the aircraft crash.

    4. I think Bull has explained fairly succintly, the reason behind the crash.

     

    Not much else to add at this point. My condolences to family and friends.

     

    Bull, just keep a close eye on your mate, offer any support you might see is needed, there's not a lot else you can do at this point.

    Sudden and unexpected death at an early age is overwhelming, just help your mate sort out his priorities, and keep him focused on the job at hand.

  14. These type of people are generally quite happy to have a major financing partner on board, who effectively "owns" the airline. Very few airline executives own any sizeable portion of the airlines they run.

     

    The execs provide the management for a good renumeration, with the intention of keeping themselves in a job for an extended period - and the financing partner stumps up the cash to run the airline.

     

    Most aircraft are leased, anyway, so the money is not required for aircraft purchase, but rather for the airline equipment, plus cash at hand for ongoing debt servicing and working capital.

  15. Jerry - This sounds like a new startup airline to me. They are using a fleet of "late model jet airliners", and are "about to sign a core FIFO contract".

     

    Sounds to me like a group of redundant airline execs have banded together to take advantage of the huge oversupply of near-new regional jets going cheap, to fill a major miners FIFO demands.

    Most of these FIFO contracts are airline gold - constant income, guaranteed pax numbers, and clients who are not even remotely likely to go bust and leave the airline struggling.

  16. Yes, there's a reason why the BOM issue weather station siting specifications. But not a lot of the private weather station owners would probably know about them.

    In addition, the official BOM weather stations are susceptible to a number of variations and omissions, anyway - as well as breakdowns in reporting, either by staff or equipment failures.

    The BOM is trending more towards automated stations instead of staffed stations (many of which,  rely on volunteers, anyway) - but even automated stations are prone to occasional failure.

    Mere mention of the Little Kingdom of the Narks, will cause anyone from Renmark to quiver and quail, because no-one from Renmark would ever set foot in Remnark, it would be a life-threatening move to do so.

    Accordingly, Salty was well-known as one of the Narks leaders - a Narkissist, as they were commonly known. You crossed paths with Salty at your own risk, and numerous were the brave who did, and who never....

  18. G'day all - I wasn't sure where to put this topic, but I guess General Discussion will have to do. The BOM has realised the benefits of harnessing the combined power of the internet, and individual weather stations, and individual observations, to provide a bigger weather information database, than what is currently available from the official BOM weather reporting stations, and aviation weather reports.

     

    The number of individuals with their own weather stations - such as the Davis Weather Stations (which are not overly expensive in the bigger scheme of things), is increasing daily, and being able to access real-time weather information from these privately-owned stations (many of whom, freely share their weather data) is a major bonus to anyone who needs accurate weather information from a certain region.

     

    The BOM has initiated a weather-information sharing website called WOW - Weather Observations Website - which pulls together anyone who wants to report any weather event. While some contributions may be of limited value (such as unskilled personal observations, or photos), the information from the private weather stations, such as the Davis units, would provide a reasonably good source of pretty accurate weather conditions at any given locality. 

    The additional information from the WOW website must all help in determining the local weather conditions at a distant site you wish to visit - particularly when weather conditions are unstable and changing fairly rapidly.

     

    I believe the WOW website has some good potential; provided people with private weather stations are notified of the existence of the site and get onboard, and link their real-time weather information to the site.

    The site is actually run by the U.K. Met Office - but it provides worldwide location mapping, so you can look up anywhere on the globe when you have an internet connection.

    Naturally, the information is all surface based - you're not going to be able to get any "weather at altitude" reports - but I thought this information would be of benefit in assessing local weather at small airstrips that RA-owners might be planning to land at.

     

    The only snag at this point, is the website has some current incompatibility issues when logging in with the Chrome browser, but these issues are being addressed, and they're expected to be fixed in Jan 2021, with a programming update.
