YennI think if you start to do a little research on Dick Smith you will find he is not as patriotic as he likes to make out, one such article (published by Steve Creedy) in the Australian Smith suggests ..

There's your first mistake, Aldo: where you're doing your research. What you say may be true, but you will never get the full story from the Murdoch press. DS has long been a target for Australia's rich because he shows them up; few of them do anything decent with their wealth. The gutter press has mocked many of his initiatives. Do some more research on the crap thrown at him when he set up Australian Geographic.

Gawd people take the poor bloody milko for granted!

That opens up another aspect, Happy. The fewer distractions the better. Repairs, refuelling, the preflight and actual taking to the air are activities best done solo. Having friends and family around may be nice, but there's a high probability they could have a negative influence on your judgement....Well meaning relatives turning up when they think first solo may happen also puts on too much pressure.Like the sign on many a motor mechanic's wall:
Hourly Rates -$50
If you watch -$80
If you help -$100

Curse you Planey! I thought I had weaned myself off bikes, then you go and dangle a Norvin under my nose...

Good to see people are starting to realise bent wings are best...I've watched with interest a couple of the Jodels that have come up for sale. Interesting little plane and quite a lot written about it. Also seems pretty docile although sounds like you have to get approach pretty spot on otherwise you can float a long way down the runway. I like this video of a kiwi guy and his dog....Nice clip Akro, but I was always told aeroplanes and dogs don't mix.

If we could easily patch the local airfields we know of into a public source, then everyone could download them. But part of the problem is knowing the strip exists. Strip name doesn't tell you where it is. When planning a route, I may not know what names to search for. Those with accommodation are very desirable, but having drawn a line from say Shepparton to Roma, how do I find the strips along that route that might have been discussed somewhere on these forums? This site's airstrip map (http://www.recreationalflying.com/airstrips/) is great, but has limited info and you can't access it easily while in the air. If you could patch it to OzRunways that would be great.

Oscar's posts are probably right on the money, but the problem is CASA's new leader is burdened with the grenade his predecessor tossed over his shoulder as he departed.
Perhaps if the heat dies down the Instrument might be quietly lifted. Pushing CASA's new boss into a corner might make that less likely.

Edit: ...from which we can update our individual OzRunways...So, if we can so easily share local airstrips we find, what about a thread so we can contribute to a central resource? -
Crickey Win; does this mean our Prime Minister lied to us? Surely not, especially after the way he called Julia Gillard a liar for breaking one promise.I wonder how the wool is so easily pulled over a large chunk of the Australian publics eyes time and time again...http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2015/may/27/story-of-australian-jihadis-overseas-and-on-the-dole-turns-out-to-be-a-furphy?CMP=soc_568-

So, if we can so easily share local airstrips we find, what about a thread so we can contribute to a central resource?Speaking of which OK those waypoints once loaded have stayed in my ozrunways even after I shut it down so you are on a winner there:thumb up:Sorry for the off topic PM-

Interesting that you thought the Nav a greater milestone than the solo, Geoff.
I remember being pretty disillusioned on the 5th morning of my intensive intro to gliding. I was still making mistakes and not getting any better. After one circuit I was ready to cut my losses and give up. Perhaps the instructor realised this; he suddenly got out and closed the canopy! The exhilaration of that flight is still fresh, as is my first solo Nav.
Was I ready? No. The instructor had not yet introduced me to several basic skills, but he elected to take a risk. I'm glad he did, or my flying career might have ended there.

Only the main strips are shown in that map, PM. I have dropped pins on lots of local strips in Google Earth on my desktop Mac; no use when flying. The team at OzRunways just talked me (via email) thru how to add them to their maps and share with others. Now when I fly, local landing grounds appear on OzRunways maps. There is great information on these forums about individual strips, fuel and services, but it is hard to access. There is also the Airstrip Google map that can be accessed through the Menu. It would be great to link the information to the points on the map. Then when planning a trip you could click on each map location and see whether it suited a landing.I keep reading details about specific airstrips that I might want to visit one day but I'm afraid I will never read the details again. -
Some damned ugly ducklings in that lot- and the biggest wing fences I've ever seen!

I am also in the market for this info. Years ago I bought a PTT switch which never really worked as advertised, so I just press the button on my portable. This avoids a mess of plugs and failure points, but it requires taking hand off throttle. Not ideal.

That's an amazing talent, but not telepathy.http://www.news.com.au/national/queensland/hunt-for-missing-miner-bruce-schuler-ends-era-of-trackers/story-fndo4ckr-1226427461934 this is the most modern story I can find on the subject. Looks like I am going to run out of people to ask about it anyway.Google "Aboriginal telepathy."

Dunno Rank. Might be secret business.Do black trackers follow energy or ground signs? I have always believed they felt their way like diviners, but have never met one to ask. -
Those fellas had no need of wires, letters, radio. Plenty of telepathy stories....aboriginal Billi Bunji, a self-taught archaeologist, reportedThat he found absolutely bugger-all.

Rated descent rate of a BRS= 7m/sec which means your airspeed is about 14kt. Not likely to give you much contol authority.

I thought billy carts had died out, but when my grandies and their 5-year old cousin visited here I realised it's in our genes...or a morphic field.
They spied our old folded-down laundry trolley and were soon using it to zoom down our steep gully. No steering, but give them time...
-
That's a bit of a problem, Marty. Seems like a slight oversight on the part of the designer. I used your solution on my BRS harness. The cables are anchored on the rear wing attachment points....There's no hard points on the 701 for 4 point harnesses...Looks like your 701 has slats. Are they fixed or automatically deployed like Handley Page?
The tailplane seems quite narrow, presumably for trailering.

I fitted a ruddy great spinner with the idea it would add to the prop's flywheel effect and help damp engine pulses. Some have predicted problems, but Ian Bent didn't seem too concerned about it.Don't know about a "balance" but at times the energy of one will act against the other. Keeping it all with the prop would seem to be the go. Certainly give the prop less of a hiding. Nev
