  1. Thanks for that fellas. Looks like the least worst option is to add Moreys to fuel and inject the best oil I can get downstream of the carby on shutdown. On my next trip to Newscastle I'll try to get some of that outboard 2-stroke as advised by Nev.

  2. ...gently bending the trailing edge of the flaperon up or down using you fingers will usually fix it.

…and gently it must be. Being so far back from the fulcrum, the tiniest bend has a significant impact. I added an aluminium extension to the rudder of my Jodel (to replace a trim tab and improve rudder authority on the ground). After umpteen attempts, I have finally got it bent right so that it flies hands free.

  3. It was done for filming Turbs. People didn't get killed as it was all arranged. The first paying regular services were postal deliveries. Single engined planes in all weathers with a terrible death rate and no one watching, (or caring much).Nev

The story of the early airmail services in the US is amazing. A few of the ground markers (set up to help them navigate) still survive.

  4. Just got around to checking the tracks of my last few flights. Awesome! Easily opened and show my flightpaths with precision. It looks like it drops breadcrumbs every few seconds; should be easy to locate a missing aircraft.

Traffic didn't seem to work; all of us activated "traffic" but nobody saw any icons indicating other aircraft. What did we do wrong?

  5. Western countries use feet for altitude. Russia and Indonesia and perhaps others use meters (metres) Airspeed is in KNOTS( Nautical miles per hour. as is windspeed). Vertical separation suits using feet Usually 1,000 but sometimes 2,ooo. feet. This measure in meters is clumsy.Fuel is in (volumetric) Imperial Gallons, US gallons, Litres, translated to weight for load computations by applying appropriate density.

Pilots carry diaries with conversion rates. Nev

Human errors in translating all those different measures cost us plenty, and caused the Gimli Glider incident and the botched Hubble Telescope mirror.

  6. Just as a bit of an aside from a couple of posts back.I am sure you will be happy to know, along with the unemployed and homeless of this country, that a government funded organisation has just discovered that most kangaroos are left handed.

We are in great hands, aren't we ????

Don't underestimate such apparently trivial topics as left-handedness in wallabies; so much of the technology you use every day developed out of off-beat discoveries by inquisitive researchers.

If our government funded such research Australia might have a brighter future. Instead, investment in science has been cut to the bone. It's a national disgrace that other countries invest in research here that our own government considers unimportant. Their discoveries may be developed into marketable technologies that this country will end up importing.

  8. I've never seen any written native language. Nev

At least one Native American nation (Cherokee from memory) developed their own script in an effort to preserve their language and culture. Several missionaries learned Indigenous Australian languages and wrote primers and Bible translations which have helped preserve those languages.

  9. Hi Dave,As you say - this is rather a Ford vs Holden thing. I have used AVPlan for a few years now and have been very satisfied with it. Also found the support people very friendly and helpful.

If I were you I would look at both, and assess for your specific needs rather than do a (IMHO) rather futile box ticking exercise. Over time they will leapfrog each other with features.

In the lead-up to the Sydney 2000 Games we saw a wonderful series of TV promos of the Olympic spirit. The voice of Tom Hanks said something like: we don't hate our competitor; we respect him. He enobles us and drives us to be our best.

  10. My favourite OHS story just happened today. My daughter is a plant ecologist or something like that and travels around doing plant surveys. Today she arrived at a job in Southern Victoria to find the whole area had just been burned by the Parks Victoria people. The reason - OHS for the survey, as there were lots of snakes around.

I gave that story a "like", but what I really need is a "Bloody Morons" button.

  11. I wouldn't ban it on the grounds of being dangerous, but I'd love to see it banned on the grounds that we've trashed the joint and comprehensively proven we can't be trusted to leave a place as we found it. Bottles, tins, food scraps, toilet paper, human excrement (yes, human sh*t which has been contaminating the water supplies and does not decompose in the extreme cold). I mean, "we" (collectively the human race) really are such a pack of idiots who actually do need to be banned from doing many things.

...and dozens of dead bodies, which climbers occasionally come across; including probably the first to climb Everest: Mallory and Irvine.
