right.. i just meant more that it is not like its a "starting all over" situation, probably just didn't express it too well
rg - love that VANS... though i wouldn't turn down one of those Skyranger or Nynja's either

Oh, and welcome Frank~!!

i thought PPLs were for life?

Hi there - does anyone know of a proper flight simulator in the Sydney area that has a single engine (Cessna or similar) model? Obviously most of the ones I have seen around are all geared up for the Airbus.
Really want to try a proper one, ie not one on my own computer at home, but one with all the sounds and motion working instruments, etc.

here is a good place to start, pretty much shows the full range. Others can speak on insurance, hangerage, fuel costs, maintenance, divorce, etc...

so i am essentially taking up valuable CPU time in the noggin trying to pace through an acronym that has at least 2 things that the plane doesn't even have! I guess it will be good for the future if I ever do fly something with a retractable undercarriage, but by then the habit to ignore that one might cause complications of its own!
Maybe instead of trying to remember an all-encompassing acronym, i can decide on one appropriate to the a/c on the day, then put a strip of blue painters tape across the cowling with B F I S H for example.

Hrmm... those things would never have occurred to me. Is this a common problem?

Oh I love The Aviators, some reason iTunes won't let me see it here :(
I know i can watch it on hulu, but was hoping i could d/l it on apple tv and nerd out on the bigscreen... sounds like i need to do the "pulling a US IP" trick...

-
thanks guys! mostly just wanted to know whether it is necessary to go through the whole litany for every turn... sounds like once I go through the who, what, when, where, why for the mandatories, I can shorten the rest, ie "7295, turning base"
-
Ahhh so this kinda answers the second part of the question:
So basically make the mandatory inbounds or taxi/enter runway calls, then the others one an probably abbreviate rather than go with the full template on each movement (or leave out if workload is high or there is no other traffic). The AIP no longer defines any mandatory or recommended broadcasts such as 'turning downwind', 'turning base', 'turning final' or 'clear of runway'. Instead CAR 166C states: 'The pilot must make a broadcast ... whenever it is reasonably necessary to do so to avoid a collision, or the risk of a collision, with another aircraft ...' -
AWESOME!!!
funny thing is I am sure I have seen this before, but man it is easy to drown in all the info...
Thanks Teco!

Hey just seeing what everyone uses for a CTAF radio call format, and also do you tend to make the whole recitation for each event, or just the full thing on first call then abbreviated after? The Sydney VFG spells out when you have to make the calls, and gives examples, but stops short of providing a template... just curious to see what everyone says.

Wow, so we can see that these really are all over the place.
So here's a question for you who have actually received your ticket - when you are doing your flight test, do you get dinged on if you don't go through each item as you learned it? For example, do i have to call out "undercarriage" and "mixture" even though the Jab has neither of those, just to call out that I am aware of them?

CFMOST for engine restart checklist after failure
C - Carby Heat (hot)
F - Fuel - pumps on, sufficient fuel remaining, select different tank, etc.
M - Mixture (cycle through, then leave partway in/out can't remember right now)
O - Oil (temp and pressure) - to me this one is dumb - if your engine stops, pressure would be low/zero anyway. Temp would be decreasing. but in any case, what could you do about it anyway, get out and add more?
S - Switches - cycle through the magnetos to see if maybe one is bad
T - Throttle
WOSSS for field selection in forced landing
W - wind - determine direction
O - obstacles - trees, power lines, ferris wheels
S - surface - not full of rocks and divots, preferably smooth and hard enough, medium level grass is good to help slow down
S - slope - uphill or no slope preferrably
S - surrounds - what is around to help ID where you are, where a phone or help might be, etc.
Mike's one above, I learned as BUMFISH - downwind checklist
B - brakes working, and not set
U - undercarriage
M - mixture rich
F - fuel - pump on and sufficient quantity for go around or whatever
I - instruments - temp/pressure in green, quick scan to make sure they are all working, no cracked glass on the vacuum ones for ex.
S - switches - landing lights or other as appropriate
H - hatches, harnesses

Well, now I have some good ones to watch out for as well! Hongie I watched that Nat Geo one, good stuff!
So all this did indeed ring my bell, and the one I am looking for is this one - Air Racers:

Thanks again guys for all the suggestions. Oh djpacro, I have seen "The Aviator"... pretty cool movie, HH was a pretty twisted bloke if half that is true! (Not you, Howard, the OTHER one! )

-
Nope, but that one looks good too! I think this one might be it now that I think of it - anyone seen it?

really racking my brain here, wasn't there a movie out recently if I recall it was somewhat of a doco of an air show or perhaps and air race, all done in HD and with some breathtaking footage. i can NOT think of the name, and none of my searches are ringing a bell. I would say released in the last year or so.
Anyone?

Back in the late 80s I was stationed at RAF Mildenhall in the UK, where these guys operated out of once in awhile. Never, ever, ever, ever got tired of seeing them and hearing them. Such a roar, as if it were tearing the very fabric of the sky! Louder than an F4 or 111. Always took off in the early early morning before sunrise, I think for dramatic effect :)
*sigh*
Thanks for posting!

I just bought that IFR for VFR Pilots book that someone recommended in another thread, can't wait to get tucked in!
Next time I go by the post office, I'll check for that one crayo, thanks!

Utterly irrelevant, but reminds me of the way my grandfather wrote - he'd line up a ruler and meticulously write across the page, when you got a letter you felt like it had been professionally engraved! Funny how things remind you...

Helluva commute though, hiho!
