yep looks like it? was told by certain level 2 inspector that the strutts where they join the leading edge and trailing edge stainless brackets are ment to have play?????????? unfortunatly this is INCORRECT and the result has worn the strutt end bolt attatchments which now have a bigger gap and 1 is uneven....so have just finished shimming them and TIGHTNING them and wings are a hell of a lot more ridged...also aileron control push rod bolt holes worn so made some nylon bushes..now no play in the ailerons,,will now look at moving the aileron pushrods up to the other hole(other holes have very promanant washer markings indicating pushrods where once in them holes)..ill give it a thourough inspection with the missus moving the stick and see what happens? then will have to wait till saturday by the look of the weather for a flight test:helmet:Think ozzie might be onto something there. It's called aileron reversal. If the wing is weak in torsion the force of the deflected aileron will warp the wing cancelling out it's effectiveness. I've seen some "rubbery" quad city challengers that do this and they are not safe in that condition. When that happens you pretty much have to control it on rudder alone (for roll).. Nev -
the ailerons are all push rod. I will have the missus help me (when she gets outa bed!!) with the stick and check for warping, and check if more up than down?vissa versa..wings are laced tight and wing gap cover tight and sealed nicley. will check wings also for warping.. thank you will let you know if anythings not right.Hang onto the aileron outer tip and have some one work the stick. See if they or the wing twists. There may be enough slop in the wing aileron to cancel the aileron. rigged correct, more down than up? Push rod or teleflex cable on your model? If teleflex make sure it has not seperated from the outer housing. Wing covering laced nice and tight. Gap cover on? Might be time to remove the wings and take off the sails and do a through inspection. A little bit of slop and wear over the entire sytem can add up to cancel out things.Ozzie

Hey Guys, yeh Ive grounded the plane at present,I have Jim Cuthill(Thruster traier and orthority) coming here in 1-2 weeks to repair my supercat he is also going to look at the thruster(he was the test pilot in my thruster),he suspects in adaquet ailron travel,I have noticed you can move the ailron push rods up to another hole this looks like it would lower the ailrons slightly and give more traval? Ill move them today and make some accurate measurements on their traval before i move them and after.. the angle of attack is extreamly high on the singles hence no 3 pointing ,must be wheeled in to avoid a stall and drop..both wing are NOW even as first flight had you using 3/4 right ailron to keep her stright,so we dropped the left wing at the back wing box to make it even with the right wing and it flies stright, just very little ailron responce,,example= in perfect smooth weather I can push the stick left to right fully into my legs(inner thighs) and not fast for a wing rock ,and it barely waggles, and ground sprctators barely notice me waving? As I suffer from anxioty having a hard time with no plane and having to wait a couple weeks for Jim,(yep im an impatiant lil bugger..lol), so I will spend today exploring traval and so forth and see if any thing stands out. also had the missus pull them up while i moved the stick and all good but when she held them down noticed stick wear in the bolts that join the stick to the push rod(in cabin pushrod/twist rod, will fix this also,,keep thinking guys and appreciate all help and advice,,definatly no flying for few days now...damn also I should mention the the stick in flight is very very heavy or stiff, you need a fair force to move it even elevator is a lil heavy(but responcive) what happens is when you hit a lil turbulane and wing drops you give it a heap of oppersite ailron and she evr so slowly rolls back and 1/2 the time you need rudder to correct aswell.

Yep Jim Cuthill is a close friend of mine and yes he is still teaching in his thruster,he also teaches wieght shift, out of his airfield "FALCON HAWK" Boxwood He is a wealth of nolage and also deals in rag and tube aircraft. And must ad Not only one of the best CFI's out thier but one hell of Pilot,His wife Kay also a senior CfI ...Pic of Jims trusty Thruster Trainer..Master H.Can't say for sure that he's still in harness but Jim Cuthill, CFI of "Falcon Hawk" ( near Benalla) was doing taildragger instruction in his T300 up till a year or so ago and Benalla ain't that far away from the Dandenongs. He used to answer calls on (03) 5828 6428. Give him a hoy and see what you arrange. Cheers

Hello, I own and fly most mournings my T83, single seat ,I ussaully fly first thing in the mourning and have logged up close to 20 hours in it. I have noticed previously lack of ailron responce and last week took off for a day flight 1.6knt wind but 32 deg, after take off I was hit by some mean weather and forced into a left hand back in which I applied full right ailron with no responce and full right rudder and full power ,after turning 240 DEG I managed to level out and land back on the runway safely...On inspecting the ailrons I descouvered the inner supports worn(rivetts and holes ovalled) I then repaired with bushes and fibreglass and made them back ridged...I took off today for a test<weather 24deg,overcast, 0knt wind>
again after take off hit rough air so made a turn left only to descover no ailron responce?(55knt ASI) full rudder applied and she just slipped, any way made a safe landing and inspected ailrons and all good? no movement, skins taught? any one fly a T83?how dose it handle? and is your tail flimsy? can rock my tail and the boom flexes a fair bit..Im sure the single thruster are ment to handle well? mines good if the air is still and dence .. but when the wind hits you have the stick pushing into your leg holding it level and have to use the rudder to level back out,,,,,,,
any help please? -
Hi Tony, took the thruster up this arvo to test out them ailrons....wind 0knts, took off and you wouldn't believe it...same thing as the other day!!! at 1 - 200ft severe sink to 50-100ft followed by instsnt up drought to 600ft (very severe up druaght) then I made a left hand turn and again she was pushed over,, faced with no ailrons to correct and full rudder had me slipping in a 45deg bank so stick forward and pushed her to 65knts asi,and lined up for next doors padock for a forced...,at 50 ft and ready to round it out become smooth so full throttle applied made a right climbing turn back to line up strip and made a 55knt 150ft approach that was the roughest yet,,couldn,t push her down landed 150 mtrs up the stip at 55knts and with the freshy wet and hardend runway had to use the taxiway for run off...Not sure whats in the air out their but its sure not likeing my thruster...oh and the ailrons????useless, luckey i got them peddals....back to the workshop and fit my thinking cap on,,got a feeling its a tail prob, ,im grounding her ,that sucks,2 planes and can't fly any of them:crying:Good to finally meet you too Tim. James is a really good pilot and I believe him when he says he meant to hold it a couple of inches off the deck! Thanks for the photos too, we don't get to see ourselves flying too often. -
Hi Tony and James, the missus pulled the old vidoe cam out and filmed you guys over the strip today, she was at the house so not the best footage but managed to salvage a couple of pics, hope you enjoy, and great catching up today. Awesome flying guys, about 2inches off the runway, approached both directions perfectly, well done guys you almost won the cuppa..( reward for landing on tiny strip = free cuppa..lol) take it easySure - any Thursday for lunch. We just need to know numbers to cater for it.

Hey doug,ha ha I got a doctors appointment at bridge tues afternoon,,ill stop in and see if anybody up for some hanger talk, any ways.I get a lot of interest in my ol Thruster and she's agood unique example of the t83 single seat, fully enclosed ,45 ltr endrourence tank, any way have the ailrons off for repair at moment, but will defenatly organise some sort of fly in ,Ill speak to harry but not sure how keen he,ll be?may be a thought to fly In to wellington, should have no worries with an early fly in,in the trusty thruster, also should then get the oppertunity for viewing the volksplane and vampier should harry and chris be keen ,ill see what their thought are in the next week or so,and prepare the broom stick , My man Jim Cuthill has descouvered via phone the thrustesr ailrons worn bad hence the lack of roll,, any way ill stay in contact on this subject as im super keen to show off my magical broom stick,..... huble, kuble, coil and trouble ,I'll make this broom fly, just like a bubble...ear he he he he he ........ Ill get you my pretty.

as soon as the supercat back in action we'll organise somthing ,(the thruster has no radio)Sure - any Thursday for lunch. We just need to know numbers to cater for it. -
Hey Doug, sounds good not sure if the thruster will go the distance??lol 45-50 knt cruise could take a while but should have the supercat back in action soon would be great to fly in..Thruster, Volksplane and Vampire.......You guys have got to organise a get together at MB so that we can all come down and meet you and yours. Check with James at RPA, maybe it could be on the same day as one of his BBQ's.Hey Thirsty, you could organise this, couldn't you? -
Had a lovely smooth flight in the Thruster this mourning, sat at 1000ft and flew to Peake and back...then had Harry in his splended volksplane fly over the strip, must say I love that volksy and the engine sounds awesome.Great to see my strip buzzing with life...my life couldnt get any better...thanks for the show harry, next time drop in for a cupper mate, and hanging to see Chris in his vamp along side you......take it easy

still not going? have someone bringing another carbie for a test next week, done a proper pitch adjustment as the poor lil thing only pulling 5800revs with the powerfin set at 10deg ,adjusted to 7deg and it increased revs to 6000 and engine starting to run warmer, but still to rich and cold cht=390 at 5400rev for 10mins and egt=1000 My savier also will be bringing the robin 50hp all ready to go in should needed,,ah a back up plan...bye the way every thing leans towards carbie being worn out!!! very old carbie throttle slide scored and has no resistence, float valve worn tip(I replaced this)idler jet 45 hole bigger than spare idle rjet 45..main jets I do not have so could not replace to see,so hence my maitance pro bringing me a 447 carbie off one of his students plane thats currently running fine,we will fit it and see what happens???can,t wait as im sure this will do the trick,,only thing is then ill need a carbie replacement? all good

G'day Tim. I finally got into the air again and took a trip out to your place

I buzzed around a bit, did a dummy approach but didn't attempt the land as your strip is far too short for a Jabbie. Do you fly over the village or go to the right of it and around the aerial mast on the corner? That is what I did. Didn't want to wake up the locals by being only 100 over there heads. Mind you, I had to be nimble to align to your main strip though. Are you 'paving' the other one? Gotta say you have some bloody lumpy weather out there mate. Really kept me on my toes.
On the way back to RPA at MB, I added another image to my collection, Talem Bend on the River Murray with Lake Alexandrina in the back-ground.

Oh, Thought I ought to mention that you wind socks are hard to see, but at least you have 2.
Oh, and also, PRA (Recreational Pilots Academy) has a Lightwing if you're interested in a TIF and such. Contact James here:

Yeh understandable,We were at the house in the yard waving like mad but guessed you were a lil pre occupied. had I thought I should have jumped on the radio...next time.. I love your pics of the sherlock aerodrome...fantastic and yep we loved your flybyes...take it easy and see you again some time,Ill be taking the Thruster up in the mourning again take off around 1/4 to 6am if smooth enough will fly to Peake to my Pa's for a flybye,if anyone in area hope to see you,you can,t miss me ill be at 600ft on a giant blue broomstick sitting on 50knts...NO RADIO IN THRUSTER>>.,OVER AND OUT.IF I were to land, I too would prefer to opposite way but then, you goes were the wind sock says to go. You should have come out and waved your arms about, might have got a photo of you trying to take off
. Sorry to say, I didn't notice your planes, was far too busy fighting the turbulence. Another reason for no closer shots. Glad you liked my 'fly by' though. -
yep she was the roughest its been and I was glad to see the ground.....Yeah we were both at work today mate. Glad I wasn't flying after what you said! -
that was awesome, When approaching from the east(heading west) as you did, I fly to the left of the village over the scrub (village just bellow my right wing, and the arial mast on my right),I make a high approch ,but rarely land from from that approach. perfer the oppersite way .. the runway that is slightly paved is an old strip that is UN-SERVICABLE(will put a X at either end soon) yeh the weather out her is rough as guts and gets worse down in Peake. I also noticed wind socks not that visable ,,just replaced the one near the house to a bigger white one,but still lil hard to see ,you did well,,,you see my 2 lil planes out sun baking? have a good one and love the picsG'day Tim. I finally got into the air again and took a trip out to your place

Hey was that Tony and /or Jeremy flying over the field today? I had just been up in my thruster 10 mns prior and encounted severe sink on take off (dropping from 150ft to 50ft) then lifted to 400 ft.leveled out then hit severe right wing thermal,60deg left bank, could not recover with ailrons full and rudder full,so full power applied ,by the time she was level had turned 240deg and lost 200 ft,so then made a right turn 90deg back to landing point and put her down with my heart in my throat:helmet: ....spewin the supercat still not going can handle a bit better than the sloppy thruster.........leson learned....So how did you guys in the Jabi find the turbulance across and around the lil sherlock strip?

thusterT83 out of control,no ailron responce

All finished and ready for a test! everything is nice and tight now, also moved push rods to the upper hole which not only pulls them down a couple of mill but also gives you more stick .......same stick travell=more aileron movement..we,ll see how she goes and keep you updated.
